Pianist

Pianist Marcus Roberts is known throughout the world for his many contributions to the field of jazz music. Credited with the development of a new approach to the jazz trio, he is often hailed as “the genius of the modern piano.” Roberts has won numerous awards over the years, including the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement. His critically-acclaimed legacy of recorded music reflects his tremendous artistic versatility. In addition to his renown as a performer, Roberts is an accomplished composer and arranger. He continues to tour with Jason Marsalis, one of the greatest drummers of his generation, and the remarkable New Orleans bassist, Roland Guerin. The trio’s program, Rhythm in Blue, pays homage to the 100th Anniversary of Gerswhin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

The virtuosic and audience favorite Marcus Roberts trio will pay homage in an unforgettable, toe-tapping performance of Roberts’ own re-conceived composition for piano and orchestra Rhapsody in D. Ives’ Symphony No. 2 will round out the concert with a blending of traditional orchestral sounds, hymns, and marches.

Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin commands the stage, leading The Philadelphia Orchestra alongside a constellation of guest stars including GRAMMY Award–winning vocalists Audra McDonald and Angel Blue and the acclaimed jazz pianist Marcus Roberts. These phenomenal performers join GRAMMY®, Emmy®, and Golden Globe® Award–winning and Academy Award®–nominated artist, actor, and producer Queen Latifah, who will host the evening honoring the memory of the great contralto, civil rights icon, and Philadelphian Marian Anderson.
