With Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel, the baroque orchestra displays its rich palette of colors. Dated 1721, the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 (so titled because of its dedication to the Margrave of Brandenburg) gives pride of place to the horns, while the Overture No. 1, rich in three trumpets, three oboes and a pair of timpani, is inspired by the splendor of Versailles. It was also towards France and its dances that Handel looked in 1717, when he composed his famous Music for the royal fireworks at the request of King George II: on April 27, 1749, a grandiose spectacle was offered to Londoners to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. But in the first three movements of Brandenburg No. 1, we also perceive the Italian model that Carl Philipp Emanuel, the second son of John Sebastian, would assimilate. This is evidenced by his Symphony No. 4 of 1776, which already turned towards the classical style of the end of the century.

Bringing this year’s Bach Festival to a close, Kristian Bezuidenhout makes his Orchestra of St. Luke’s debut as both conductor and fortepiano soloist in a program that outlines the metamorphosis of musical styles from the late Baroque into the Classical era.

Bach’s lively and warm-hued Concerto for Oboe and Violin, flutist Bart Feller performs C. P. E Bach’s popular D Minor Flute Concerto, and pianist Gilles Vonsattel closes the program with J. S. Bach’s E Major Keyboard Concerto, a work that’s both lighthearted and full of challenging complexity.
