Hersh has put together a wonderfully exciting and energetic program for our April Classics concert. This program opens with Louise Farrenc’s lyrical and spirited Symphony No. 3. Then we will explore J. S. Bach’s “Little Fugue” in G minor with an arrangement by Music Director Hersh himself. We’ll close out the evening with Mendelssohn’s uplifting and energetic Violin Concerto in E minor featuring Tai Murray. This concerto remains among the world’s most prominent and highly regarded violin concertos in history.

An all-star lineup of leading musicians comes together to perform two iconic works: Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale Suite and Wynton Marsalis’ A Fiddler’s Tale.

Two singular composers tell the tale of a fiddler’s Faustian bargain and musical duel with the devil. The suite from L’histoire du soldat is one of Stravinsky’s most memorable chamber works, retaining the stylistic range, dance elements, and expert instrumentation of his larger-scale compositions. In Wynton Marsalis’s re-imagining, A Fiddler’s Tale, he takes Stravinsky’s early jazz ingredients even further, melding jazz and classical idioms together with an updated narrative—here performed by special guest Phylicia Rashad and conducted by longtime Marsalis collaborator Damien Sneed. Hear both works performed by outstanding members of the acclaimed Gateways Music Festival.

Do you love the sound of the violin? Whether you're a player or a devotée of great violin playing, Chicago-native and Festival soloist Tai Murray will take you deep into the mysteries of this soulful instrument as she provides expert instruction to young musicians.

Guest conductor Ludovic Morlot takes the reins of the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus for a feast of choral masterpieces, including the achingly beautiful Ave verum corpus by Mozart, the evocative setting of the hymn Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré, and the spellbinding Gloria of Francis Poulenc. Also on the program, violin virtuoso and Chicago native Tai Murray plays the Festival premiere of the Violin Concerto by New Orleans jazz legend Wynton Marsalis. The Festival also welcomes the debut of another New Orleans native, soprano Lindsey Reynolds.

Renowned Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä interprets music of Finland’s greatest musical export, Jean Sibelius. Full of soaring, majestic melodies, Sibelius’s First Symphony was his most lushly romantic, and is often called the greatest ‘First’ of any composer in music history. Vänskä also shares music from one of Finland’s most outstanding contemporary composers, Lotta Wennäkoski. Dvořák’s delightful Violin Concerto is steeped in the spirited folk-dance traditions of his Bohemian homeland, and superb violinist Tai Murray (“technically flawless…vivacious and scintillating,” Muso Magazine) draws out every vibrant phrase.

Mozart’s phrases often seem to take on a question-and-answer format, as if he is scripting musical conversations. Composer Petér Eötvös created his Dialog mit Mozart in 2014; throughout the piece, he engages in a dialectic exploration of tunes by his renowned predecessor. Violinist Tai Murray takes the stage to perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.3 in a program crowned by Schubert’s Symphony No. 4, the “Tragic,” composed at age nineteen but unheard until decades later.

Join us for an evening of classical favorites, opening with Tchaikovsky’s one-and-only Violin Concerto, performed by internationally-celebrated soloist, Tai Murray.
Rounding out the evening is Beethoven’s ever-popular Symphony No. 7, which new and seasoned classical fans alike may recognize from Hollywood films “Mr. Holland’s Opus”, “The King’s Speech”, and “X-Men: Apocalypse”.
