The Piano Quartet genre has enticed and inspired many of history’s greatest of composers. Pianist Gloria Chien, violinist Arnaud Sussmann, violist Milena Pajaro De Stadt, and cellist and artistic director Nicholas Canellakis join forces to present three spectacular and varied takes on this unique form by Fauré, Turina, and Schumann.

The early years of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of a remarkable new approach to composition. This program highlights works by four of the finest composers from this era. In the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor—one of the most renowned composers of his time—and Reynaldo Hahn audiences will hear genius at work. Known primarily as a violin virtuoso, Eugène Ysaÿe created music that is now regarded as pioneering. Finally, in the piano quintet of the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch, we find one of the most skillful, inventive, and riveting examples of the genre ever created.

The Barns At Wolf Trap

The festival concludes with a celebration of Vienna’s most accomplished composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Arnold Schoenberg and Erich Korngold were among the great wave of artists who fled Europe’s wars to settle in the United States. The traditions of the Viennese masters continue to be passed down to young American composers such as Alistair Coleman, an alum of LCCMF’s Young Composer Seminar.

While our Festival Artists are among the world’s great chamber ensemble musicians, they can also dazzle as soloists!  All ages are invited to the hour-long performance, where adults and children can learn about the possibilities and range of each of these instruments in the hands of these virtuosos!

Few artists are as synonymous with New York City as the supremely talented George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. Their irrepressible spirits established New York as the place where different musical styles and cultures could fuse together seamlessly - the city where “King of Swing” Benny Goodman could perform Béla Bartók’s Hungarian folk style in the world’s greatest concert hall, Carnegie Hall. The vibrancy of New York gave rise to inspirational figures like Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, the first female composer to win the Pulitzer Prize.

Concert I: The Rhythm of New York City

Student musicians perform for Artistic Director Soovin Kim and festival artists Hye-Jin Kim and Fred Sherry during a morning of violin and cello masterclasses taking place simultaneously. The audience can wander from room to room and observe these illuminating sessions.

Sandbox Percussion closes out the series and Bravo! Vail’s 36th Music Festival with John Cage’s Third Construction; George Crumb’s American Songbook III, Unto the Hills; and a selection of songs from Charles Ives, featuring the American soprano Susanna Phillips and Anne-Marie McDermott.

Like a shooting star, Franz Schubert blazed across music's sky for a brief 31 years, leaving behind over 1,000 works that transformed the Classical into the Romantic age.
Four programs spanning Schubert's creative career and variety of compositions offer a rich journey into one of music's most ethereal worlds. A fifth concert explores how the legacy of Schubert and composers in the two centuries following his death have re-worked and been inspired by his compositions.
