Pianist

Conductor-pianist Stephen Drury will talk about the “Concord Sonata” by Charles Ives and then perform it. The sonata (his second) is one of the most definitive American piano works of the 20th century; each movement is named for leading figures of the Transcendentalism movement of the 19th century. 2024 is coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Ives’ birth.

NEC's Piano Department marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Ives with two programs of his works for piano. 

Tonight's program - '“Ives Extended” - includes The Celestial Railroad, the Set of Five Take-Offs, works by Carl Ruggles, Lou Harrison and Henry Cowell, and rarely heard music for two pianos in quarter-tones by Ives, David Fulmer, and Georg Haas.

Elisabeth Schilling performs her work PRISMA to a live performance by pianist Stephen Drury of selections from György Ligeti’s Études for Piano. Schilling will also discuss her choreographic process via visual materials from her artistic research and video excerpts from her work HEAR EYES MOVE Dances with Ligeti.

NEC faculty Stephen Drury created the Callithumpian Consort in the belief that new music should be an exciting adventure shared by performers and listeners alike, and that the brand new masterpieces of our day are beautiful, sensuous, challenging, delightful, provocative, and a unique joy.
Callithumpian’s repertoire is the new and unusual, encompassing a huge stylistic spectrum from the classics of the last 100 years to works of the avant-garde and experimental jazz and rock. It is grounded in the musical discoveries of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Zorn, Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman, and Iannis Xenakis.
