Seong-Jin Cho brings “world-class technique, polished to a high sheen of expression” <em>(Los Angeles Times)</em> to Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, nicknamed <em>Emperor</em> for its regal temperament. Jaap van Zweden also conducts Shostakovich’s powerful symphony, which explores emotion without self-pity, and Julia Perry’s <em>Study for Orchestra,</em> a piece that is at times edgy, lyrical, and even raucous.
