A unique collaboration between outstanding young musicians and an expert on the music of J.S. Bach, the Gamut Bach Ensemble prides itself on stylistically sensitive, earnest, and insightful performances. Returning for its 10th PCMS appearance, the Ensemble, directed by Koji Otsuki, embarks on its annual program of cantatas in the luminous Church of the Holy Trinity.

Korean violinist Chee-Yun and Slovenian guitarist Mak Grgić unite for a concert that celebrates both of their unique cultural heritages. Ranging from tango and folk-influenced dance compositions to Korean art song and contemporary works, this collaboration between a gifted young guitarist and an extraordinarily talented string player is not to be missed.

Meet us at the intersection of art and science, in the Kimmel Center’s Hamilton Garden, for a panel discussion exploring A Song by Mahler, with a reception to follow. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania take the stage with the creative minds who brought A Song by Mahler to Philadelphia for a conversation about how both art and science can change the way we portray, care for, and love those living with cognitive impairment.

A love song by Gustav Mahler is at the center of this probing new work by eminent pianist and composer Marc Neikrug. Liebst du um Schönheit (“If You Love for the Sake of Beauty”), from Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, is “a key element to the drama,” Neikrug says, and, as it “embodies the message of love as an aspiration, a self-embodied posture, and a state of being,” it speaks to the emotional core of the work as well. A Song by Mahler centers on the changing realities of two characters: a concertizing singer who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s and her husband, who is also her accompanist. This work of music theater is “an attempt to address the specific emotional evolution of this couple, touching on their love and their particular relationship to music” Neikrug says. “It is not an attempt at documenting the myriad aspects of the disease.”
