2. Spirit of the Season: Bach, Corelli, and Vivaldi
Nicholas McGegan, a titan in the field of early music interpretation, guides the BSO and a team of all-star vocalists through Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, followed by one of the composer’s most beloved orchestral works. Corelli’s concerto, written for Christmas Eve, contemplates the wonder and quiet splendor of the night before, while Vivaldi’s setting of the hymn, “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” welcomes the vocalists back to deliver some of Baroque music’s most iconic and inspired melodies.

5. The Nutcracker – A Magical Tale in Mount Vernon
Get ready to be swept away by excerpts of this reimagined version of The Nutcracker, choreographed by Amy Hall Garner and set in the Baltimore neighborhood of Mount Vernon, featuring inspiration from many of our iconic community landmarks such as The Walters Art Gallery, Restaurante Tio Pepe, and even the Fireworks from the Monument Lighting! Dancers from the Baltimore School for the Arts will be front and center as they perform to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score and bring the magic all around us to the stage!

Composer in Residence James Lee III peers through the open roof of a festive sukkah and beholds the even greater distance to Orion’s Nebula, a nursery for newborn stars in the constellation that has captivated humans for millennia. 10. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 featuring Tao and Heyward
Approaching Mozart’s music with a presence that is “elegantly unruffled” (The New York Times), Conrad Tao illuminates the subtleties of his forebear’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 20. For the young Polish composer Lutosławski, threads of local folk music and lessons from centuries past converge to make his Concerto for Orchestra an ear-tickling marvel of mid-century modernism. An interlude from Benjamin Britten’s breakthrough opera provides another angle of emotional mastery from a musician wise beyond his years.
