3. Shostakovich Quartets: Intimate Portraits, Part 3
Shostakovich was on a chamber music roll when he composed the Quartet No 2 – its Romance tipping the wink to Tchaikovsky and Borodin. Tragedy intrudes on the 11th Quartet which mourns the much-loved Vasily Shirinsky, second violinist of the Beethoven Quartet. And standing at the gateway to Shostakovich’s late style, it’s paired with the lyrical No 14, which breathes the vivacious warmth of its dedicatee, cellist Sergei Shirinsky, and sports a heart-on-sleeve duet Shostakovich called his ‘Italian bit’. The Kyans complete the programme with Gubaidulina’s work about the nature of sound itself.

4. London Symphony Orchestra/Gianandrea Noseda
The Festive Overture is exactly that: a sprightly, light-touch of a piece composed in only three days. MacMillan’s orchestral music is sometimes likened to Shostakovich’s. His new Concerto, with its dark colours and folk-like melodies, sits well between two of the Russian composer’s works. The darkness is dispelled at the end, concluding with great serenity.

5. Hania Rani & Ensemble present: Ghosts
Woven together from hundreds of sounds, flavours and stories this performance highlights the intricacy of Ghosts by the introduction of strings, woodwinds and brass instruments onstage. The result of long-time collaborations and friendships as well as varied musical backgrounds the album is given new life. Rani sees this performance as a true representation of the record, whose orchestral and tangled nature insists on a deeper musical sound onstage.

7. London Symphony Orchestra: Half Six Fix – Prokofiev 2
Schubert’s Die Zauberharfe was one of his melodramas, the text of which was sadly lost. He also wrote incidental music, including an overture for a play called ‘Rosamunde’ (also lost). Partly due to so much getting mislaid, the cheerfully bustling overture to ‘Zauberharfe’ was known as ‘Rosamunde’ for decades.

8. London Symphony Orchestra/Gianandrea Noseda
Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 1 is a tribute to the composer’s formidable skill at the keyboard. It has a lightness of touch alongside hints of the storminess Beethoven would become known for.

9. London Symphony Orchestra/Gianandrea Noseda
Schnittke remarked that he saw a ‘desperate striving to find myself’ in his First Violin Concerto. His self-criticism seems harsh, for this is a brilliantly original work, shimmering with instrumental colour.

10. Lang Lang
Superstar pianist Lang Lang performs the solo piano version of one of Fauré’s most popular works, followed by Schumann’s eight-movement masterpiece – a staple of the Romantic repertoire that the composer once called his favourite. The evening culminates in music by Chopin, including a selection of his mazurkas in which he took Polish folk traditions and made them his own.
