Orchestral favourites include the enchanting overture to Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the pastoral beauty of Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, Debussy’s languid L’apr’s-midi d’un faune and Gershwin’s sultry Summertime from his folk opera Porgy and Bess. Savour the virtuosic skills of Hallé Leader Roberto Ruisi in Summer, first from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and then from Piazzolla’s interpretation, The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

Sofiia Matviienko, a remarkable flutist, was born in the picturesque town of Pereshchepino in central Ukraine. Her journey in the world of music began at a young age when a doctor discovered her speech problems and recommended playing the recorder as a therapeutic measure. At 14, having transferred to the classical flute, Sofiia performed her first solo concert in Italy, capturing the hearts of the audience and commemorating the event with a CD release. Since then, she has achieved numerous victories in competitions and graced the stages of international festivals in Argentina, the United States, Germany, Ukraine, Italy, Bosnia, the United Kingdom, and many other countries.

Kahchun Wong is joined by a host of acclaimed British soloists and the full forces of the Hallé and Hallé Choir for this triumphant season finale. Rapturously received by the audience at its 1824 premiere, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony remains a firm favourite today. By this time, Beethoven was profoundly deaf and had to be gently turned to face the audience to accept their adulation, which was shown by the waving of hands, hats and handkerchiefs as well as multiple standing ovations.
