1. Southbank Centre: Phenomenal Women
The centrepiece is Valerie Coleman's Concerto for Wind Quintet and Orchestra, Phenomenal Women. The piece is a profound tribute to women who have stepped into treacherous spaces, inspired the world, and moved the course of history; shining a bright light and opening doors, especially for women of colour.

4. Her Stories
Pianist, musicologist, and serial champion of the under-represented, Samantha Ege has a special affinity with Florence Price, whose highly charged Sonata launches a recital that also nudges the dial towards Cuba with works by Odaline de la Martinez and Camila Cortina Bello. Mexico yields an irresistibly fidgety study by Gabriela Ortiz, and East meets West in Chen Yi’s variations on a Chinese folk song.

5. Laura van der Heijden cello; Jâms Coleman piano
The title of this cello and piano duo programme has a distinctly nocturnal ambience in which sit larger pieces by Debussy and Britten.

6. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4
For centuries, even the most gifted composers have found themselves persecuted or marginalised simply because of who they were. As a gay man in Tsarist Russia, Tchaikovsky knew what it was to be an outsider, and he poured all his emotions into his Fourth Symphony: a no-holds-barred emotional autobiography, pulsing with melody and torn by raw and dangerous passions. ‘Petrenko’s Fourth is a white-knuckle ride’ wrote Gramophone magazine, and he certainly won’t hold back tonight. There’s no shortage of great melodies in the first half of the concert, too, as Petrenko champions Dorothy Howell’s Lamia – a wildly romantic tale of forbidden love – and the lovely piano concerto by the African-American composer Florence Price. Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, making her Royal Philharmonic Orchestra debut, is the soloist in music that was side-lined for decades and is only now receiving its due.
