3. Mozart & Strauss
Summers at Severance kicks off with a Mozart doubleheader. Famously composed in just one night, the composer’s fiery Don Giovanni Overture is contrasted with his delightful Third Violin Concerto, performed by rising American violinist Randall Goosby. Conductor Marie Jacquot also leads the Cleveland Orchestra premiere of Richard Strauss’s Symphony in F minor, a dramatic early work that foreshadows the composer’s later style.

4. Carmina Burana
Variously bombastic, playful, and heart-wrenching, Carmina Burana is a sonic tour-de-force based on a collection of medieval poems about love, life, and nature. Osmo Vänksä leads The Cleveland Orchestra in this colossal work alongside the Blossom Festival Chorus, The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus, and a roster of internationally celebrated soloists. The evening opens with a smaller, though no less epic, work — Sibelius’s En Saga, which evokes ancient folklore.

5. Beethoven & Ravel
Beethoven’s youthful Second Symphony echoes the humor and elegance of an earlier era while offering a window into the boldness of his later symphonies. The Cleveland Orchestra and conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali pair this early work with music from Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé, a sumptuous journey across mythical landscapes. Providing the perfect complement, Stravinsky’s Jeu de cartes depicts a rousing game of cards in a sparkling neoclassical style.

Veronika Eberle makes her Cleveland Orchestra debut in this beloved showpiece before conductor Petr Popelka leads Robert Schumann’s “Spring” Symphony, a work written in the dead of winter that joyfully anticipates the renewal of the season to come.

9. Liszt & Bartók
Three Hungarian composers meet in this kaleidoscopic program led by conductor Christoph Koncz. Liszt’s poetic Les préludes is followed by a delightful work by Ernst von Dohnányi, the grandfather of Music Director Laureate Christoph von Dohnányi.
