Performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., with the venue opening at 6:45 p.m. for parking and seating arrangements. Music by the Maestro! Experience the beloved theater music of America’s most famous classical musician, Leonard Bernstein, at our annual free River Place Plaza concert. Bernstein, the subject of the blockbuster 2023 film Maestro, composed in a variety genres in addition to conducting orchestras globally. Hear exciting and moving selections from Bernstein’s theatrical masterpieces Candide and West Side Story as well as a vocal feature with Cedar Falls tenor, Jeff Brich.

The season opens on a high note with two inspired takes on Gershwin. Stewart Goodyear plays the classic Rhapsody in Blue, followed by jazzy variations on I’ve Got Rhythm performed by The Menefield/Phillips Quartet. Symphony No.1 by Black composer William Grant Still blends classical symphonic form with spirituals, blues, and jazz. This landmark composition influenced Gershwin, who in turn inspired Bernstein.
