**Event Overview:**
The Wallis Center for Performing Arts proudly presents "The Great Yes, The Great No," a unique theatrical experience conceived and directed by the renowned William Kentridge, in collaboration with award-winning theater maker Phala O. Phala and choral conductor and dancer Nhlanhla Mahlangu. This production is a compelling blend of play, Greek choir, and chamber opera, enriched with Kentridge's breathtaking surrealist visuals.
**Synopsis:**
Set in Marseille, 1941, the narrative follows a liner bound for Martinique, carrying artists and intellectuals fleeing Vichy France. Among the passengers are notable figures such as surrealist André Breton, anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, Cuban painter Wifredo Lam, Communist novelist Victor Serge, and exiled German author Anna Seghers. The journey intertwines history with fiction, creating an allegory of forced expeditions past and present, and invites other celebrated figures to join this new kind of ark.
