4. The Planets
What do a Renaissance genius and the vastness of space have in common? Vision. Curiosity. A relentless drive to understand the world. Hagen’s The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci gives voice to the mind of a thinker whose ideas still shape our world, with the MSU Choir weaving his words into something almost otherworldly. Then, we set our sights on the stars with Holst’s The Planets, a piece that captures the energy, mystery, and wonder of the universe—from the commanding presence of Mars to the dreamlike drift of Neptune. Two journeys—one through history, one through the cosmos—both reminding us of the limitless nature of human imagination.

6. Ray Chen Plays Bruch
Music carries our stories. It holds memory, culture, and emotion, linking us to those who came before and those yet to come. Tian’s A Thousand Years of Good Prayers opens the evening with a piece that reflects on history and tradition, full of quiet strength and deep feeling. Then, violinist Ray Chen takes us into the rich, romantic world of Bruch’s Violin Concerto—a piece that feels both deeply personal and universally moving. Finally, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra shines a light on every part of the ensemble, proving that music, like history, is built on many voices working together.

10. Verdi, Miller, & Brahms
Some stories unfold in words. Others in sound. This program brings together music that speaks of struggle, resilience, and joy. Verdi’s Nabucco Overture opens with bold, sweeping melodies that have the heart of an opera and the soul of a revolution. Pianist Han Chen then joins us for Jared Miller’s Shattered Night, a piece that explores chaos and hope, breaking apart and rebuilding before our ears. And then—Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, a symphony that took years to complete but was well worth the wait. Its final movement bursts with the kind of triumph that only comes after the storm.
