A Symphony of Talent: Peking Acrobats, Eddie Palmieri, and La India at Lehman Center
This spring, the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is set to dazzle audiences with a trio of spectacular events celebrating the pinnacle of human skill and artistic innovation. From the gravity-defying feats of the Peking Acrobats to the rhythmic fusion of Eddie Palmieri's Afro-Caribbean jazz, and finally, the vibrant melodies of La India, these performances promise unforgettable experiences. Each event offers a unique glimpse into the world of cultural artistry, showcasing extraordinary talents and the vibrant pulse of global music traditions.
For the last thirty two years, THE PEKING ACROBATS® have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control.
Palmieri's professional career as a pianist took off with several bands in the early 1950s. And in 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones instead of the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that blended American jazz with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri disbanded La Perfecta in 1968 to pursue different musical projects, though he would return to the band's music in the 2000s.
La India is a Lehman Center favorite! Every year the princess of Salsa comes to our PAC for an exciting Mother's Day celebration. La India has been nominated for both Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, winning the Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album for the Intensamente La India Con Canciones De Juan Gabriel album.
The events at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts are more than just performances; they are a celebration of human creativity and cultural diversity. From the breathtaking acrobatics of the Peking Acrobats, the innovative jazz of Eddie Palmieri, to the soulful sounds of La India, each event offers a unique perspective on artistic expression. These performances remind us of the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect us to the shared rhythms of humanity. Join this season’s celebration and be part of an audience that witnesses the extraordinary.
