7. BBC Proms: Edward Gardner conducts the LPO
Waves play and waterfalls plunge, the still surface of a lake reflects the midday sun and an ocean duets with the wind in a concert with saltwater on its breath. Edward Gardner conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme of 20th-century orchestral sound-pictures. The mercurial moods of Debussy’s La mer and rolling waters of Sibelius’s The Oceanides find answer in the gentle rolling harbour of Ravel’s song-cycle Shéhérazade, performed – in a Proms debut – by mezzo- soprano Aigul Akhmetshina. Tippett’s last major work takes us inland to discover a glowing ‘lake full of song’.

8. Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto
If music means anything, it’s about engaging both heart and mind, and letting your imagination soar. Tonight, to launch a new season, Edward Gardner and the LPO set sail for new continents of human emotion, from a modern British masterpiece by LPO Composer-in-Residence Sir George Benjamin to the unchained melodies of Tchaikovsky’s much-loved Fifth Symphony. It’s an incredible journey, and along the way, the great Yefim Bronfman brings his unrivalled experience and insight to Beethoven’s grandest piano concerto – the one they call the ‘Emperor’.

9. Brahms’s Second at Saffron Hall
Tchaikovsky’s flamboyant concerto is swept along on a tide of impassioned melodies and scintillating piano fireworks. Brahms’ symphony sings and dances to a different tune, propelled by a lyrical charm, panache and sunny high spirits; “the melodies fly so thick here that you have to be careful not to step on one” deadpanned Brahms whilst writing it at an idyllic lakeside retreat. Beethoven distils the essence of his only opera Fidelio into the standalone overture, from the claustrophobia and despair of imprisonment to a jubilant celebration of love and freedom.

10. Mahler’s Fourth
A jangle of sleighbells, a flurry of birdsong … in music, sometimes the simplest things are the most powerful. Mahler’s playful Fourth Symphony begins under pure blue skies and ends in a child’s dream of heaven. Hans Abrahamsen’s Let me tell you paints its pictures in the purest shades of light, and this Shakespeare song-cycle with a haunting difference has already become one of the 21st century’s best-loved classics. Edward Gardner unites these wondrous worlds tonight – plus, of course, the pristine voice of soprano Jennifer France.
