1. Blind Injustice
Based on the eponymous book by Mark Godsey and casework by the Ohio Innocence Project, a 12-member cast brings us the exonerees’ stories in their own words, adapted by librettist David Cote to be both spoken and sung. Composer Scott Davenport Richards’ score calls on jazz, funk, and hip-hop to help convey the stories’ vastness and their particularity – the twisting of a child’s words, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, bearing a passing resemblance to someone else. Commissioned by Cincinnati Opera in 2019, it has only grown more relevant since its premiere. Learn more.

3. Bach Reframed: The B Minor Mass
Join us for an experiment in new approaches – firmly rooted in Bach’s unparalleled music – that looks at the underlying sentiment of those repeated-text passages. Kyrie/Lord, have mercy: what might that mean today? Who might be asking? Have mercy on whom? Part developmental workshop, part master class, and part open rehearsal, this is your chance to get involved in an intimate, adventurous creative process. Much in the spirit of our multi-chapter MYTHS AND HYMNS, we’re looking to an array of writers and visual artists who will make the text bloom in ways that scan perfectly with Bach’s music. BACH REFRAMED also draws on our success with Bach’s ST. JOHN PASSION, for which we commissioned a new English translation, and pays tribute to our founder Robert Shaw, who believed that choral classics should speak directly to audiences in English and be communal experiences as they were originally intended.
