5. Mcgegan Conducts Haydn
“One of the finest Baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent), Nicholas McGegan returns to the MSO to conduct music by two Haydns, beginning with younger brother Michael Haydn’s incidental music from Voltaire’s play Zaïre. Later, Joseph Haydn’s exhilarating “Military” Symphony lives up to its name with percussive power, trumpet fanfare, and what one reviewer referred to as “a climax of horrid sublimity!”

6. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo And Juliet
When Music Director Ken-David Masur tapped Concertmaster Jinwoo Lee after a four-year search, he praised Lee’s energy, musical curiosity, and “great artistic spontaneity.” Those qualities also describe this kaleidoscopic program, which finds Lee performing Sibelius’s dreamy Violin Concerto following Nielsen’s symphonic poem about the lusty god Pan’s pursuit of a water nymph. Anna Clyne’s deeply-felt elegy dedicated to her mother is infused with poetry — “Earth will keep you tight within her arms, dear one” — and Tchaikovsky draws inspiration from one of Western literature’s most epic love stories of all time for his musical portrayal of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.

7. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons
Baroque violinist Rachell Ellen Wong, Grand Prize winner of the inaugural J.S. Bach Competition, returns to the MSO to lead one of the most iconic treasures in all of the Baroque repertoire: Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Vivaldi provided vivid poems to accompany each of these seasonal concertos — in spring, “the goatherd sleeps next to his trusty dog” as birds sing; summer features goldfinches, pines, and a gathering storm; peasants dance and drink in autumn, before a grand hunt begins; and finally winter turns from icy winds to the contentment of resting fireside.

8. Casablanca
“Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.” Walk into Allen-Bradley Hall Valentine’s weekend and experience one of classic Hollywood’s most romantic tales on the big screen with live orchestral accompaniment. Cozy up with a loved one as you savor the story of Rick and Ilsa’s romance, the beautiful visuals, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra performing Max Steiner’s Oscar-winning score live in sync with the iconic film.

9. American Voices
Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts a powerful program highlighting three generations of American composers. In Aaron Copland’s stirring musical portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the composer begins by suggesting “the mysterious sense of fatality that surrounds Lincoln’s personality” and ends by attempting “to draw a simple but impressive frame about the words of Lincoln himself.” MSO Principal Clarinet Todd Levy performs Richard Danielpour’s From the Mountaintop, dedicated to the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The evening concludes with Charles Ives’s Second Symphony, which samples classic American folk tunes such as “America the Beautiful,” “Turkey in the Straw,” and “Camptown Races” — the last of which Lincoln himself used as a campaign song, bringing the concert full circle.

10. Ingrid Fliter Plays Mozart
“[Ingrid] Fliter plays with such grace and heartfelt sincerity… by whatever magical means, [she] touches the heart,” claims Gramophone; Fliter joins the MSO for Mozart’s smiling Piano Concerto No. 17. This heartfelt program continues with music from Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet, complete with a masquerade ball, declarations of love, and a tragic ending for the star-crossed lovers. Michael Sanderling, whose “overriding interpretive priority seems to be sheer beauty of sound…” (The Classic Review), leads this endearing program.
