1. BBC Philharmonic: Discovering Bliss
Perhaps one of the most inexplicably neglected names in twentieth-century classical music, Sir Arthur Bliss (whose Piano Concerto is featured on 24 October) was, in his day, an admired composer of music for the concert hall, stage and screen, his achievements recognised when he was made Master of the Queen’s Music after the Second World War. In the 1920s and 30s he embraced the modernism of Stravinsky and leading French composers before moving towards a more traditionally English and Romantic style tinged with continental hues.

2. The Shark is Broken
FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Filming is delayed…again. The lead actors – theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider – are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic…if it doesn’t sink them all.

7. Sinfonia Viva
This concert of contrasts sees a pair of pioneering female composers facing off against two pillars of the male classical establishment. Fanny Mendelssohn was as prodigious a talent as her brother, Felix, and only her gender prevented her from getting the recognition she deserved. Her lively and lyrical Overture in C has a fascinating contemporary counterpart in Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte. The Pulitzer Prize-winner was inspired by hearing a performance of a Haydn String Quartet to create a mesmerising, off-kilter minuet.

8. After Hours: Xenia Pestova Bennett
Pianist and composer Xenia Pestova Bennett presents her immersive, award-winning project, All Aglow. Taking its inspiration from coastal bioluminescence (a range of glowing behaviours exhibited by marine life and bacteria), All Aglow explores resonance, memory, improvisation and the changing environment. Prepared piano (with objects gently inserted and placed to vibrate on the strings) is combined with nostalgic analogue synthesizers and field recordings of seascapes, cold-water swimmer interviews and historic texts to create a mysterious auditory mix, adding elements of sonic time-travel and blurring stylistic boundaries.

9. Mike & the Mechanics
Following 2023’s much lauded sell out ‘Refuelled! Tour’, Mike + The Mechanics return for the ‘Looking Back – Living The Years 2025 Tour’. This tour will see them play their hits including ‘Over My Shoulder’, ‘The Living Years’ and ‘All I Need Is A Miracle’ as well as drift into some of Genesis’s much loved classic tracks. Originally formed in 1985 by Mike Rutherford “as a side project to Genesis”, Mike + The Mechanics originally featured Paul Young and Paul Carrack as frontmen, and together, they achieved huge commercial success throughout the 80s and 90s achieving number ones all over the world and going on to sell over 10 million albums. After Paul Young’s sudden death in 2000 the band released one further album before deciding to call it a day. In 2011, Mike started writing songs again and invited Roachford and Howar to join him and their chemistry was instant and they released ‘The Road’ album and the band began touring again with huge success and have remained together since.
