Featuring fantastical worlds of bewitching lovers and swashbuckling sailors, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade recalls the queen who saves her life — and those of 1,000 women — with her stories. And Principal Cello and composer Nancy Ives merges music, poetry, and photography to tell the story of the majestic falls of Celilo, Oregon, Although the construction of the Dalles Dam destroyed this central site of Native American life for over 15,000 years, the traditions and resilience of the community live on today.

"In it the whole of nature finds a voice," Mahler wrote of his Third Symphony. A work of immense scope and profound emotion in which the composer realizes his goal to "embrace everything" in his music, Mahler's Third is an expansive hymn to the primal life force that animates every flower in the meadow, animal in the forest, and the divine love that forever unites nature and humankind.

5. Joshua Bell Plays Saint-Saëns
Violin superstar Joshua Bell joins the Oregon Symphony for the grandest of season openings! One of the most celebrated, most award-crowned artists of our day, he shines in Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto, lifting you into the stratosphere of the instrument’s register. Stravinsky’s sumptuous Suite from The Firebird is filled with the stuff of fairytales: a prince, captive princesses, the Firebird’s magic feather, and an evil ogre. Vibrant colors and rich harmonies glitter and pulse, ending with the gossamer Lullaby and a shimmering climax.

Opening our concert is a piece by a titan among minimalists, Philip Glass. Our new Artist-in-Residence Simone Porter launches the Concerto with propulsive force, then invites you to lose yourself in the harmonies of the Adagio, and leaves you breathless in the sensational last movement—but gives you a final moment to dream about the journey you’ve just taken.

It’s a fabulous night of orchestra-meets-jazz with headliner—and Portland’s own—esperanza spalding: bassist, singer, songwriter, composer, and Grammy Award winner performing her own songs with arrangements that showcase the expanded forces of the orchestra. Among esperanza’s heroes is jazz icon and multi-Grammy Award winner Wayne Shorter, whose music you’ll also enjoy on this program, including Gaia, a work for vocals, jazz quartet, and orchestra co-written with spalding.
