December’s drawing in on Merseyside, but here at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall it’s summer all over again! Mendelssohn’s heart turned somersaults when he arrived in the sunshine of Italy, but today his Italian symphony is just the starting point for a whole afternoon of winter warmers. Karel Deseure conducts Ravel’s dreamy Spanish fantasy, Poulenc’s witty Sinfonietta, and Mozart’s ebullient Oboe Concerto – with the Orchestra’s very own Helena Mackie in the spotlight. It’s music that practically dances for joy.
This Christmas, the star-studded Love Actually, perhaps one of the most quotable and adored Christmas films around, will be presented live in concert, with a full orchestra playing the score live-to-film.
There’s no limit to the stories that can be told by a string quartet. The Equilibrium Quartet, four members of the Orchestra who aim to re-balance inequality in music, present a chamber concert with a fascinating difference. They'll perform works from the first lady of Polish music, Grażyna Bacewicz, Panamanian folk, and the beautiful yet largely undiscovered music of Emilie Mayer, before easing gently into the Christmas season with Rebecca Clarke’s Combined Carols.
The radical East London duo are known for their intense live shows exploring the raw holler of folk, synths, spoken word and intricate rustic dobro guitar. Full-force reworkings of centuries-old work-songs speak to contemporary issues of class, using multi-layered sonic palettes to deeply reflect hidden histories, told with a razor-sharp authenticity. Stick In The Wheel have created their own London vernacular, a contemporary roots music that celebrates the collective stories and traditions of the city - conjuring the past to point toward the future.
Liverpool-based singer-songwriters Astles and Abby Meysenburg host the fifth edition of their annual Christmas show in the Music Room. Joined by an array of friends, musicians and creatives, Astles will also re-assemble the full Balloon Moon Orchestra – including a string quartet and harp – for this special evening that signals the start of the festivities every year.
With some concerts it’s hard to say which bit we’re looking forward to the most! There’s never a dull moment when pianist Simon Trpčeski is in town: we love him, you love him, and we can’t wait to hear him bring all his charisma and flair to Tchaikovsky’s barnstorming First Piano Concerto. And then Domingo Hindoyan whirls us off to the Kingdom of Sweets, with a lavishly stuffed selection box of tuneful goodies from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Talk about a treat…
