A Cultural Odyssey: Unveiling the Artistry at The Shedd Institute
The John G. Shedd Institute for the Arts in Eugene, Oregon, serves as a vibrant epicenter for cultural and artistic expressions. From silent films accompanied by live jazz to classic musicals and soulful concerts, the institute’s exquisitely curated series of events in 2025 promises a captivating journey through varied genres and eras. With performances by celebrated artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Cecile Licad, and Ruthie Foster, and iconic musicals like 'Oklahoma!' and 'Pal Joey,' every event is a testament to the rich tapestry of American art and culture.
Trumpeter, composer, and 2011 NEA Jazz Master Wynton Marsalis performs his live score to accompany a screening of director Dan Pritzker's 2010 silent Louis Armstrong biographical film Louis, joined by classical pianist Cecile Licad and an all-star 10-piece jazz ensemble in The Shedd Institute's intimate, vibrant Jaqua Concert Hall.
A Connecticut Yankee is Rodgers & Hart at their best. It is just as insanely incongruous as Twain's original with wonderful Rodgers melodies and spot-on Hart wit to boot. Look for the classic “Thou Swell” and “My Heart Stood Still”, together with fun numbers like “On A Desert Isle With Thee”, "To Keep My Love Alive", "Ye Lunchtime Follies", "The Camelot Samba" and more!.
We are extremely pleased to welcome back to The Shedd Ruthie Foster, who stops with her band at Jaqua Concert Hall Friday July 25th on tour in support of her new CD, Mileage.
Based on John O'Hara's 1940 epistolary novel of the same name (who also wrote the show's libretto), Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart's Pal Joey tells the story of a small time nightclub emcee...a slice of low-life Chicago in the 1940s set to some of the best songs of the decade, headed up by "Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered" and "I Could Write A Book" and including such intriguing specialty numbers as "Zip".
Based on a magnificent story that is both touching and heart-rending, Oklahoma! is filled with classic songs. Look for "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning", "Kansas City", "Many A New Day", "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top", "I'm Just A Girl Who Cain't Say No", "People Will Say We're In Love", and more!
The John G. Shedd Institute for the Arts in 2025 is an artistic journey that bridges the past and present, offering diverse cultural experiences. From the soulful jazz rhythms of Wynton Marsalis to the heartfelt melodies of 'Oklahoma!,' each event showcases the richness of American culture.
