1. The Hallé & Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus
Delyana Lazarova, winner of the inaugural Siemens Hallé International Conductor’s Competition, begins this concert with Debussy’s sensuous evocation of the poet Mallarmé’s dreams and desires of a faun. Delyana then directs the massed forces of the Hallé, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, a rising RNCM star and the stunning mezzo-soprano, Hanna Hipp, in Lili Boulanger’s ominous setting of Psalm 130, widely believed to be a reaction to the outbreak of World War One. Sheffield treasure, Darius Battiwalla, pulls out all the stops in music by Saint-Saёns. His first published organ work, Fantaisie, has two contrasting movements: one, full of elegance and charm and the other, strong and confident. The concert concludes with his monumental, fascinatingly-textured “Organ” Symphony.

2. The Hallé
Andrew Manze is well-known as a leading interpreter and one of the composer’s biggest advocates of Vaughan Williams, a composer with whom he has a particularly close affinity. He conducts the Hallé’s performance of several of Vaughan Williams’ much-loved pieces, including his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Fifth Symphony. He will also be joined by Roberto Ruisi, Leader of the Hallé and sought-after soloist in his own right, for The Lark Ascending. Considered revolutionary in the years following its composition thanks to its rhythmic flow and musical imagery, the solo violin acts as the songbird and the orchestra as the rolling landscape beneath it. Upon hearing the opening of Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony, Andrew Manze was ‘instantly captivated by its magic’. (Presto Music)

5. The Waterboys
The Waterboys" class="css-u850" data-mark-multiple="true">The Waterboys have been led by Scottish singer and guitarist Mike Scott since the 1980s and have evolved through countless line-ups, winning a fearsome concert reputation along the way. Their best-known songs include The Whole Of The Moon, How Long Will I Love You, This Is The Sea and Fisherman's Blues. Indisputably one of the best live bands in the world, the 2024 version of The Waterboys features double keyboard players Brother Paul from Memphis and James Hallawell from Cornwall, and is grounded by killer Irish rhythm section Aongus Ralston (bass) and Eamon Ferris (drums). They reconfigure music from all stages of the band's career, from the early "big music" and the roots-inspired Fisherman's Blues era, to the run of genre-fluid records that have poured out since 2015's swaggering Modern Blues, taking in soul, funk, country-rock and any other kinds of music they care to play. Expect drama, improvisation, musical fireworks and Waterboys classics.

6. Buenos Aires Symphony of Colón Opera
The first South American orchestra to appear in the series, the prestigious Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera makes a splash with this colourful and fizzy programme. Multi-award-winning Argentinian conductor, Mariano Chiacchiarini, blends some of the dramatic and operatic showpieces for which the orchestra is renowned, including suites from Bizet’s passionate opera Carmen and Tchaikovsky’s masterful ballet Swan Lake, with works by his compatriot Astor Piazzolla. One of the most important bandoneon players of his generation today, Pablo Mainetti showed a special interest in tango music as a child. His command for the instrument, a type of concertina that gives the Argentinian tango its unique sound, will be showcased in Piazzolla’s ardently-crafted works for this distinctive instrument
