3. Illuminate Women’s Music
Illuminate is a project that seeks to highlight and celebrate the creativity of women both as composers and performers. Illuminate concerts feature both commissioned works from early career women composers and historical works, celebrating the rich legacy of music written by women. In this concert, violinist Maja Hovat and pianist Joesph Havlat perform works by Grazyna Bacewicz, Isabella Ellis, Laure Chan, Lili Boulanger, Tonia Ko, Hollie Harding and Illuminate’s Artistic Director Angela Elizabeth Slater.

Trio Gaspard has championed the entire breadth of piano trio repertoire to become one of the most sought-after trios of its generation, praised for its unique and fresh approach to the score. ‘A truly refreshing performance! Richly coloured, honest, full of joy and with good agogics! This trio belongs to another league! Ensemble magazine. Founded in 2010, the trio’s members hail from Germany, Greece, and the UK. As well as exploring well-known classics, the players work with contemporary composers and research seldom-played masterpieces. Committed to commissioning new works, in this concert they perform a piece they have commissioned from the Moldovan composer and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. They conclude Manchester Chamber Concert’s season with Schubert’s Trio No. 1 described as pouring out a stream of spontaneous melody. From its soaring opening theme to the sublimated echoes of Viennese popular music in the finale, the music exudes life-affirming energy.
