Experience an evening of chamber music performed by UC Irvine’s talented music students. This concert features esteemed chamber works, demonstrating the students' exceptional skill and artistry through detailed and expressive interpretations in a close-knit performance setting.

Pianist and composer Kei Akagi has been a mainstay of the international jazz world for over four decades. Perhaps best known for his work as a member of the Miles Davis band in the late 1980s, his career also includes extended associations with major figures such as Stanley Turrentine, James Newton, Joe Farrell, Al Di Meola, and Airto Moreira. He has also performed or recorded with Art Pepper, Blue Mitchell, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, Charnett Moffett, Tom Harrell, Bobby Shew, Eddie Harris, Sadao Watanabe, Slide Hampton, Steve Turre, Robin Eubanks, Jean-Luc Ponty, Allan Holdsworth, and others. Akagi has recorded 14 albums as a solo artist and leader. As a sideman and accompanist, he is on over 60 albums worldwide, including Miles Davis’ last recorded works. He has also written numerous original works for his own and others’ recordings, with over 100 compositions currently in publication.

The Department of Music invites you to an engaging evening of music and improvisation as UC Irvine undergraduate Jazz students perform in this quarterly concert. The event will feature small student ensembles, each directed by our distinguished jazz faculty.

Spend an evening with the UCI Jazz Orchestra, showcasing a broad spectrum of jazz from the big band era to contemporary styles. Enjoy a lively and varied performance that demonstrates the orchestra’s range and expertise in large-ensemble jazz music.

In this collaborative performance, Professor Rajna Swaminathan (mrudangam, voice), ganavya doraiswamy (voice), and Utsav Lal (piano) explore multiple intersections among South Asian music, jazz/creative music, and other sound worlds. Having performed in one another's projects over the years, the trio format brings their creative voices into deeper dialogue. Original compositions by each artist will be featured, interwoven with expansive improvisations and innovative arrangements of music from their influences.
