3. Music of the Time - Distantly Familiar
Exceptional violinist Arabella Steinbacher inspired the Luxembourg composer Georges Lentz to write an unearthly and beautiful violin concerto. In it, the sound of the violin spreads out in the Philharmonie like starlight under the sky of the Australian outback, where Lentz composed his piece. In her large orchestral piece "Masaot", Olga Neuwirth enters a river of memories and associations: music as both home and foreign. Georges Aperghis instigates a new celebration of orchestral virtuosity with his eighth etude.

5. Fate - Tchaikovsky's Fifth
The theme of "man and fate" has fascinated many composers. Beethoven, for example, in his music for Goethe's drama "Egmont", in which a hero tries to win freedom for his country but tragically fails. In his fifth symphony, Tchaikovsky illuminates the tragedy of his emotional distress: a dark, whispering motif runs through the work, which the composer sees as an expression of "complete surrender to fate". In between there is a pearl of romantic concert literature that many have yet to discover: immediately after taking up his post as music director in Düsseldorf, Schumann wrote his cello concerto full of euphoria - a work that is played far too rarely today.
