4. Transatlantic Sessions
For the past fifty-four years, Loudon Wainwright III has carved out a distinguished career as one of our most original singer-songwriters, releasing over thirty albums, winning a Grammy, acting in films and TV shows (including MASH and resident artist on BBC TV’s Carrott Confidential), and has had his songs recorded by artists including Johnny Cash, Mose Allison, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Bonnie Raitt, and his own son, Rufus Wainwright. In 2015 LWIII won the Lifetime Achievement Award on BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

5. York Guildhall Orchestra: Sibelius, Bloch, Tchaikovsky & Shostakovich
Their winter concert will see the return of an old friend, Jamie Walton – a superlative cellist and soloist in the rarely played, but utterly beautiful Shelomo by Ernst Bloch. In the second half, they will perform the exciting 9th Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich – a deliciously light-hearted work in Shostakovich’s inimitable harmonic style with some gorgeous tunes, especially in the woodwind, and a mischievous glint in the eye! Both Sibelius and Tchaikovsky feature in the programme with two old favourites and orchestral show-off pieces.
