The Company premiere of The Art of War leads Program Two. Created in 2015 by BalletMet’s Artistic Director Edwaard Liang, to be driving, pulsing, and powerful, he describes it as, “…about controlling chaos.” Choreographed during the opening stages of the Second World War, Ashton’s Dante Sonata continues the theme of conflict in Program Two. A synthesis of wartime symbolism and his reflections upon experiencing Franz Liszt’s score, the work enraptured Sarasota audiences during it’s Company Premiere. The triple bill closes with Paul Taylor’s Company B, framing the turbulent era of World War II through the songs of the Andrews Sisters. Combining moments of joy and hilarity with the heavy reality of war, Taylor creates a remarkable piece that perfectly exemplifies the duality of America in the 1940s.

This mixed bill features choreographers on the cutting edge, who help us imagine what ballet may become over the next century. What voices will be featured? Whose stories will be told? Discover the beginnings of answers in world premiere works from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Kiyon Ross, as well as the on-stage premiere of Edwaard Liang’s innovative take on human connection, The Veil Between Worlds.

Experience Eugene Ballet’s power in Suzanne Haag’s Heaven and Earth, a world premiere ballet with music composed by Eugene percussionist Pius Cheung. Heaven and Earth explores the dynamic forces of sight and sound with live music by Orchestra Next featuring Pius Cheung and Eriko Daimo. The program includes the Oregon premiere of Age of Innocence, the rich and alluring work by special guest choreographer and BalletMet Artistic Director Edwaard Liang.
