We end our season with a powerful adaptation of Steinbeck's classic novella by the father of American opera, Carlisle Floyd. Of Mice and Men delves deep into the American psyche and experience of the 1930s and brings to life the unbreakable bond between George and Lennie, migrant farm workers, striving for the American Dream. Directed by Kristine McIntyre, our production uses projections to immerse the audience in Lennie's perspective, blending intimate humanity with cinematic scope in a gripping, tragic journey.

There can be no more fitting way for HGO to celebrate the centennial of the birth of composer Carlisle Floyd—who founded the company’s Butler Studio program with then-General Director David Gockley in 1977—than a special staging of his evocative opera Of Mice and Men, performed by a cast of artists from the 2025-26 class of the Butler Studio. Based on John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella of the same name, the acclaimed 1970 opera will be presented by the Butler Studio in the Wortham’s intimate Cullen Theater.

1911. Pittsburgh. Seth Holly’s boarding house is home to drifters and broken hearts, a waystation for folks biding their time. The residents include a restless musician with a wandering eye, a young woman waiting on a husband who’s not coming back, and an eccentric mystic who performs rituals in the yard while helping others find their song. Enter Herald Loomis, recently freed from a Southern chain gang with his young daughter in tow and desperate to reunite with a wife who might not want to be found. A lyrical triumph from Wilson’s magnificent The American Century Cycle, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone is a haunting and poetic tale of lost souls searching for spiritual mooring in the raging sea that is America.

An inspiring tale filled with laughter and adventure, The Three Musketeers is a reminder to all that courage, honesty, and valor can change the world. Kirsten Childs’s adaptation finds its inspiration in the oft-ignored fact that writer Alexandre Dumas was of French-Haitian heritage, and award-winning director Kent Gash (The Comedy of Errors) playfully mixes swagger and swashbuckle.

Thumbprint is inspired by the true story of Mukhtar Mai—a trailblazing Pakistani activist whose fight for justice and safety reminds us that women's rights are human rights. After surviving sexual violence perpetrated by a local tribal council in retribution for her brother's alleged crimes, Mukhtar decides to live—and that decision changes the world. Her hope: open a village school for girls to learn to read and write, so that they may avoid the humiliation of signing their names with only a thumbprint. Heartening, and optimistic for the future, this opera is about restorative justice. 

Thumbprint premieres on Portland Opera Onscreen on Thursday, April 20, and will be available to stream on-demand through June 2. Digital passes are $50. 22/23 Season subscribers get discounted passes for $40. Students can unlock passes for $10.

Currency and status in Atlas are determined based on the presence of Syndica, a gene that promotes vitality and longevity. When Persephone is found to possess a version of Syndica that confers immortality, she is betrayed by her family and must run for her life. She is thrust into an epic journey, uncovering a hidden past that leads her to discover love’s true meaning and the power to determine her destiny.
