All the citizens of Vejlby, a small, peaceful town in central Jutland, are shaken. The priest has had an argument with his fellow, Niels, who has now disappeared without a trace. The town's new and inexperienced district bailiff, who is also the priest's future son-in-law, is forced to solve the case. But as the investigation begins and the events unfold, skeletons come out of the closet, and a grim story of old grudges, spurned love and frayed morals sees the light of day.
