Ib Andersen’s world premiere will create a whole new look to the orchestral work, initially composed by Stravinsky in 1911 and 1912. Andersen will modernize the composition with transformational choreography that captures the energetic and emotional feel of the music through ballet.

“Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is one of the most challenging scores composed for ballet,” said Ib Andersen. “It’s a score I have lived with for almost 40 years, always thinking about how to deal with the extraordinary energy the music creates. I have decided now is the time to face and embrace this masterpiece for Desert Botanical Garden with new added visual elements.”

The Rite of Spring

This ghost-filled, haunting masterpiece is one of the most beloved and romantic ballets of all time. Giselle tells the tragic yet passionate tale of a lovely young woman who dies of a broken heart. The ballet is famous for the Wilis, maiden spirits who take revenge on the young nobleman that betrayed Giselle. Achingly beautiful, Giselle is an enrapturing work of art that draws audiences in with themes of enduring love, tragedy and romance.

Bassist Arild Andersen made his mark in the Norwegian jazz scene as early as the late 1960s, and within a few years he was established as a central figure in the international jazz world. He is still in the front ranks today. He still overflows with the joy of playing, he constantly seeks new challenges, and he plays his bass absolutely wonderfully.
