Formed in 1973 by legendary trumpeter Donald Byrd, The Blackbyrds helped define jazz-funk, R&B and soul in the 70s. Assembled from the most talented students at Howard University, the band struck gold with their eponymous debut and classics like Do It Fluid, Walking in Rhythm, Happy Music and the iconic Rock Creek Park. Their Grammy-nominated sound has influenced generations, from 1980s Brit-funk to hip hop icons like Tupac, De La Soul, MF Doom, and Nas, who have all sampled their music extensively.

Who's That Playing My Box? is a documentary film nearly 5 years in the making highlighting the life and legacy of beloved Louisiana Creole musician Joe Hall. This evening will feature the premiere screening of the film, followed by a performance and panel discussion with Hall's longtime friends and collaborators Cedric Watson and Forest Huval, moderated by folklorist Barry Ancelet. One year after Hall's passing, the event will honor the enduring impact he made on his community, and his work to preserve the Creole musical heritage of his family and South Louisiana.
