The year is 1873. In the prestigious English Reform Club sits the always calm rich man Phileas Fogg. He reads in the newspaper that there are now so many railway lines, ferry routes and roads that one can travel around the world in just 80 days. None of the other members of the club believe this, but Phileas Fogg does, and they make a bet in which Phileas puts half of his fortune at stake.

Gregers comes home to town after 16 years of absence. Here he meets his childhood friend, Hjalmar, who feels lucky. He is a photographer, has a beautiful wife and a daughter of almost 14 – the almost blind Hedvig, whom he adores. He also fantasizes about inventing great things. And he has let his old father move in with him and set up an indoor hunting ground with hares and other game up in the attic, so that the old man can still go hunting. There is also a wing-shot wild duck, which Hedvig is very fond of.

Antonio Salieri was once the great, admired, Italian court composer in Vienna. He had made a deal with God that Salieri would praise God through music, and that would be rewarded with divine inspiration. But then Salieri and the rest of Vienna and all of Europe meet Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A young, silly, German fool. A vile and shrill-laughing new composer, who is called “Wolfi” by his fiancée. But he has one thing. He is a God-given genius composer, and no one can refuse him. His music enchants everything and everyone, and it makes Salieri’s compositions sound old-fashioned, stiff, boring – and worst of all: mediocre.
