We meet a man and a woman who fall in love with each other. They have met before, but have not put their feelings into words. Now the man chooses to break with both parents, wife and child to experience this new love. But can the infatuation and desire last? Gregers comes home to town after 16 years of absence. Here he meets his childhood friend, Hjalmar, who feels lucky. He is a photographer, has a beautiful wife and a daughter of almost 14 – the almost blind Hedvig, whom he adores. He also fantasizes about inventing great things. And he has let his old father move in with him and set up an indoor hunting ground with hares and other game up in the attic, so that the old man can still go hunting. There is also a wing-shot wild duck, which Hedvig is very fond of.
