Guest conductor Lina Gonzalez-Granados makes her Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut with a delightful mélange of music from the Americas. Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari taps into folk music from the Huichol people, and the ASO presents a world-premiere by Atlanta’s own Joel Thompson, an Emmy-winning composer working at the intersection of art and social justice. The concert includes a musical travelogue by Gabriela Lena Frank and the snappy Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez. French pianist Cédric Tiberghien makes his ASO debut.

Filled with drama, sweet longing, and unforgettable melodies evoking an American landscape seen through an immigrant’s eyes, Dvořák’s Ninth has become one of the most popular and performed symphonies. But both in recent performances and recordings, Gustavo Dudamel has been praised for “[jolting] the familiar score with vitality and imagination” (The New York Times). When Spanish violinist María Dueñas premiered the concerto Ortiz wrote for her, the Los Angeles Times wrote that “a star was born,” praising her musical depth and effortless virtuosity. Dueñas teams up with Dudamel once more for an encore performance of Ortiz’ Altar de cuerda.

Carl Orff’s singular and powerful work, bringing to life texts from the 11th and 12th centuries, comes to the stage with soloists Ashley Fabian, Joseph Tancredi, and Octavio Moreno plus the full might of the TSO Chorus. Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, which plays tribute to the blue deer, a spiritual guide of the Huichol people of Mexico, is followed by Robert Muczynski’s Symphonic Memoir, premiered by the TSO in 1979 and the latest in the TSO’s exploration of this Tucson-based composer.
