Following her hauntingly beautiful music theater performance in 2024’s A Song by Mahler, Jennifer Johnson Cano brings her “voluminous voice with remarkable agility” (Washington Post) back to PCMS. This performance with her husband, acclaimed collaborative pianist Christopher Cano, and St. Louis Symphony Principal Violist Beth Guterman Chu, features solo pieces, duos, and trios that highlight the eloquence and depth of the modern mid-range.

For the young Benjamin Britten, a holiday in Prestatyn was the key to a new world of musical wit and invention. That’s the starting point for this colourful guided tour through the wild, wonderful (and often astonishing) universe of 20th century British piano music: masterpieces and miniatures by Britten, Warlock, Moeran and Tippett, all brought sparkling to life by virtuoso pianist and RWCMD artist-in-association Llŷr Williams.

More? Sea! For the brilliant end of the season of our symphonic concerts, we're heading to the water. Debussy's impressionistic mega-masterpiece La Mer takes us to a luminous Mediterranean scenery. This is what summer by the sea sounds like! You want more! Voilà: With Frank Bridges' suite of four sound pictures The Sea, we travel to the coast of the southern English county of Sussex - sometimes in sunlight, sometimes in moonlight or in a storm. The piece has probably never been heard in Nuremberg. A real discovery! "When I heard the piece for the first time, I was thrown off track," admitted Bridges' composition student Benjamin Britten. He gets his due here with his vocal-instrumental serenade. Six poems from five centuries of English poetry form the basis. They conjure up evening and nighttime moods with effective horn playing and haunting tenor singing. The Symphoniker's solo horn player Matthias Nothhelfer and the Glasgow-born tenor Thomas Walker will provide solo brilliance.

Edmund Rubbra is a sadly neglected composer, but was highly rated in his time. Inscape (1964) is a beautiful melodic setting of four poems by Gerald Manley Hopkins.

Britten's Saint Nicolas (1948) tells stories of the life of St Nicolas, fourth century Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, including the miraculous bringing back to life of three "pickled boys". Nicholas Pritchard will be reprising his role as St Nicolas, which he performed alongside Britten Sinfonia at the Aldeburgh Festival this June.

The evening will begin with Beethoven's String Quartet No. 11, Op. 95 "Serioso," a piece renowned for its intense and emotional depth. The quartet will be brought to life by the virtuosic talents of James Ehnes and Simone Porter on violins, Jonathan Vinocour on viola, and Paul Watkins on cello.

Following Beethoven, the audience will be treated to Bridge's Cello Sonata, H. 125, a work that encapsulates the composer's reflection on the anguish of war. Paul Watkins will return to the stage, this time accompanied by Gilles Vonsattel on piano, to deliver this poignant piece.

The concert will conclude with Coleridge-Taylor's Clarinet Quintet in F-sharp Minor, Op. 10, a masterpiece that stands as a testament to overcoming societal barriers with its romantic and lyrical melodies. Anthony McGill will lead on clarinet, supported by an ensemble including Jack Liebeck and Njioma Greivious on violins, Yura Lee on viola, and Kyril Zlotnikov on cello.

Ballet music. Certificate 18. Winter exhales. The Earth gasps into life. The Rite of Spring welcomes in the vernal equinox, Siberian-style. Full of barbaric rituals and savage dances, the orchestra is turned by Stravinsky into a collective of cave people. Come and find out why it caused a riot at its Paris premiere in 1913. Shostakovich’s celebration takes on the form of a procession with his Third Symphony, ‘The First of May’, in a series of riotous marches culminating in his own Ode to Joy-like chorus. Rousing, uplifting music for the people. And to complete our spring harvest, ravishing swathes of sound and colour, part English idyll, part Impressionist painting. Frank Bridge’s vision of spring unfurls in one of the most individual British tone poems of the 20th century. The concert also celebrates the 100th birthday of the BBC Philharmonic’s former Chief Conductor, Sir Edward Downes, who had a special love of Russian music which is featured in this programme.

Known as one of the leading quartets of its generation, the Doric String Quartet performs two beloved quartets from the turn of the nineteenth century. Later joined by the internationally recognized British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, they round out the program with a rare treat: a Piano Quartet from early twentieth century composer Frank Bridge.

Sinfonia da Camera presents an evening of evocative musical imagery inspired by English painters, poets, and playwrights! A depiction of Thomas Rowlandson's painting of the same name, Walton's Portsmouth Point Overture portrays the seaside bustle of the busy port town in southern England as ships prepare for departure. The title of Frank Bridge's There is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook is drawn from Shakespeare's Hamlet in which Queen Gertrude describes the tragic circumstances in which the drowned Ophelia was discovered. The first half concludes with arguably Coates' most well-known work, London Everyday Suite, depicting London's Convent Garden, Westminster, and Knightsbridge areas. Following intermission, as part of a continuing collaboration with Lyric Theatre @ Illinois, the evening continues with a lightly-staged production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury. A comic opera depicting a "breach of marriage" trial, this farcical production ultimately concludes in an unexpected new marriage and "joy unbounded!"

Imagine a family of seven siblings who all play a musical instrument at the highest levels, winning international awards, performing on the most important world stages, gaining fame not only for their talent but their marked collaborative spirit and affection for one another. The Kanneh-Masons are this family. Cellist Sheku and pianist Isata team up for a duo concert featuring great 20th century cello sonatas of Karen Khachaturian, Dmitri Shostakovich, Frank Bridge, and Benjamin Britten.

Two of the brightest young stars in classical music, cello-piano sibling duo Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason appear in a vibrant chamber performance of cello sonatas by Bridge, Shostakovich, Britten and Karen Khachaturian.  After winning BBC Young Musician in 2016, Sheku Kanneh-Mason became a household name worldwide in May 2018 after performing at the Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which was watched by nearly 35 million people globally. In January 2020, Sheku released his second album, Elgar, featuring the Cello Concerto, which reached No. 8 in the UK Official Album Chart, making Sheku the youngest classical instrumentalist and the first cellist in history to reach the UK Top 10.  Three years Sheku's senior, Isata Kanneh-Mason is quickly gaining fans of her own. Her debut album, Romance, drew popular and critical acclaim, entering the UK classical charts at No. 1 when it was released in July 2019, leading Gramophone magazine to extol the recording as “one of the most charming and engaging debuts” and Classic FM to praise Isata as “a player of considerable talent.”

Together with the same fellow musicians as in the opening concert, Daniel Hope ends his carte blanche by inviting the acclaimed baritone Thomas Hampson to highlight another iconic facet of English music: his proud affection for popular traditions embodied by the immense repertoire of folksongs, whose kaleidoscope of emotions and colours has touched the hearts not only of islanders but also of continental Europeans, such as Haydn and Beethoven, who produced beautiful pieces in English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish tones.

This nautical program explores the deep connection between water and orchestral color, as composers evoke crashing waves, shifting tides, and misty shores through sound. Concertmaster Luke Hill takes center stage in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, a sweeping work of folk-inspired lyricism.

After intermission, the journey continues with Bloch’s Poems of the Sea and Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, concluding with Frank Bridge’s The Sea – a lush, cinematic portrait of the ocean’s every-changing moods.

Is there an English sound we can all agree on? Of course not. But at least we can celebrate the music of English composers and how they have depicted the country over time. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending is enduringly popular as a portrait of rural England. But it was written amongst military manoeuvres preparing for World War I and so must be heard as much as a heartbreaking piece about loss as it is some depiction of bucolic Albion. Our leader, Sophie Rosa, is our violin soloist. If you’ve heard Sophie before you know what a treat you’re in for, and if you haven’t then you really wouldn’t want to miss this performance

We also have music by two composers who bookend the idea of English classical music. Henry Purcell wrote wild, emotive music for both the palaces and backstreets of early 17th century London. Edward Elgar is the composer we associate with pomp and circumstance and the rigour of Empire. But actually no – listen to Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and you can hear the same raw emotion of Purcell. Maybe the English aren’t so straight laced after all!
