The elderly fisherman Santiago has long been unlucky - he catches no fish. Some villagers mock him, others pity him. His apprentice Manolin urges him to venture further out to sea than anyone else has ever dared, one last adventure to prove that Santiago's glory days are not over.

Minou and her father have accidentally run over a cat. Minou, 8 years old, begs and pleads – and the cat is allowed to come home with her. Even though dad hates cats, especially this one. The house is now filled with cat situations, cat-matics and the occasional misunderstanding. The cat is magical. And it seems to be there to support them. That's good, because even though Minou and dad want to get along, they can't reach an agreement.
