Since the flute of the 'Faun', music has breathed differently , said Pierre Boulez, referring to the new and beguilingly floating world of sound that made musical history in France at the end of the 19th century with the premiere of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune . Decades later, his compatriot Albert Roussel composed the ballet Bacchus et Ariane and shaped the plot according to the old Ariadne myth with music full of unbridled energy and an overwhelming rush of sound.

Spring has inspired many composers to write music. Perhaps it is precisely the awakening of nature that inspires creativity. Here we get to know two quite different spring feelings. Debussy's  Printemps  is more of a description of a spring-like inner awakening, while Boulanger's  D'un matin de printemps  is more concrete, with joy and anticipation when we have left darkness and cold behind us.

A new star in the classical music world is the Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev, who now lives in Berlin. He won his first international competition at just 13 years old. Camille Saint-Saëns' Second Piano Concerto, with its pathos and sparkling virtuosity, is the perfect choice for Malofeev's WDR debut. The other two works on the program are French: Maurice Ravel's "La Valse," a brilliant tribute to the Viennese waltz. Lionel Bringuier also conducts Albert Roussel's brilliant, yet rarely heard, Third Symphony.

Leon Botstein leads TŌN in a concert of music spanning over 200 years, with four 20th-century works presented alongside a brief symphony from 1776. The program begins with Ulysses Kay’s Chariots, inspired by the writings of poet William Blake and others, and John Cage’s whimsical Suite for Toy Piano, both in solo performance by Frank Corliss and Lou Harrison’s orchestration. Then we explore three symphonies of different styles: Stravinsky’s expressive Symphony in C; C. P. E. Bach’s adventurous Symphony in D Major, and one of Albert Roussel’s most beloved works, the vivacious Third Symphony, written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930.

The SLSO and Saint Louis Dance Theatre come together in this exquisite, adventurous collaboration to imagine Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite in an entirely new way. As Stravinsky worked on pieces like "Dumbarton Oaks" and Pulcinella, he toyed with the idea of disequilibrium and showcased his quirkiness and creativity with unconventional musical characters. Look forward to a reunion with the wonderful violinist Tianwa Yang. In 2022, she received perhaps the most important award for a soloist: the OPUS KLASSIK "Instrumentalist of the Year." In the 2022/23 season, we hosted Tianwa Yang as our "Artist in Residence," and in 2024, we toured China with her. Whether there or at our joint concerts in Germany, audiences everywhere fell at her feet.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Martinů came of age as a composer in the musical melting pot of Paris, where his Czech influences would absorb more international ones. This program examines the worlds that shaped him, contextualizing the composer among his teachers and peers. These include Jaroslav Řídký, with whom he had played in the Czech Philharmonic, and their teacher Josef Suk, whose youthful yet confident First Piano Quartet is dedicated to Suk’s own teacher (and soon-to-be father-in-law), Antonín Dvořák. Two of Martinů’s earliest Parisian works—the ragtimey Foxtrot and assured First Piano Trio—will be heard alongside chamber works by his teacher Albert Roussel, one of the most prominent French composers of the interwar years; the Polish émigré Alexandre Tansman, like Martinů a leading light of the so-called École de Paris; and their elder luminary Maurice Ravel, whose writing would influence the Czech composer’s string quartets.

Anyone who has ever danced the Viennese Waltz will know that an air of royal-imperial grandeur and stylistic elegance is not the only sensation that overcomes you. A profound sense of dizziness and centrifugal force are part of the deal. What in the beginning seems cheerful and buoyant quickly turns into sensual frenzy, much like a spinning top gone crazy. There is no piece that shows these two aspects of waltzing in such a poignant and Viennese way as Ravel’s La Valse, so much so that even the famous impresario Sergei Diaghilev, who had commissioned the work, felt it was a bit over the top for his ballet company. But Ravel’s orchestral dance is so mesmerizing, so colourful and rhythmically bizarre that it is easy to visualize the frenzy on an imaginary dancefloor: »You can see a huge hall with countless people spinning in circles,« said the composer about La Valse. In less than 14 minutes, the illusive bliss of waltzing turns into apocalyptic ecstasy.

The BSO Benevolent Fund is a charity run by the musicians for the musicians. It was set up in 1958 to provide financial support for musicians in cases of prolonged and/or serious illness or injury. From the start it has been successful in meeting these aims with the very generous support of those who have contributed. The main source of income is the annual Benevolent Fund Concert at which all the musicians give freely of their services, as have many conductors and soloists who have featured in these concerts over the years. The Fund also embraces members when they retire, and by keeping in touch with them at Christmas it helps to maintain a link with old colleagues.
