"Music with a sting" is the title of Jürgen Leuke's concert review of the performance of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" conducted by Helmut Rilling in the Stuttgarter Zeitung. Despite the magnificent sound, listening to this work is not meant to be a pleasure, as a persistent sting is a warning: after eleven hours of bombing during the Second World War, the German air force had reduced most of the central English city of Coventry to rubble and ashes, and St. Michael's Cathedral was completely destroyed.
