Following two triumphant Benaroya Hall appearances, internationally lauded British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason returns with two other members of his remarkable musical family: sister Isata on piano and brother Braimah on violin. Esbjerg Ensemble's opening concert has the sea as its theme. The concert begins with three festive sailor's songs by the English Malcolm Arnold. The sea continues to play a role in Bruun's Letters to the Sea , which has given its name to the concert. Here, it is very much about an inner sea, inspired by the author Ursula Andkjær-Olsen : "You could write a letter to the sea and ask it to lie down..." .

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition may have inspired more arrangements than any other piece in the classical canon, but this performance eschews the most famous by Ravel for a more intimate version for String Quartet. Mussorgsky’s aren’t the only images in this programme – Crawford-Seeger’s Wind Quintet paints a compelling image of the ailing composer returning to the thing she most loves, while Arnold’s Guitar Concerto is a tacit portrait of the great jazz guitarists – Django Reinhardt’s influence on the piece is unmistakable.

Arnold's concerto is particularly notable for its second movement, "Blue Scherzo," a tribute to the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.

The program also includes Haydn's Symphony No. 30 in C major, known as the "Alleluia Symphony" for its use of a Gregorian Alleluia chant in the opening movement. This symphony, possibly written for Easter Sunday of 1765, reflects Haydn's masterful composition skills at the age of 33.

The concert will conclude with Mozart's Symphony No. 41 in C major, K551, famously known as the "Jupiter Symphony." This grand and majestic piece is Mozart's last and longest symphony, often hailed as one of the greatest symphonies in classical music.

Handel’s Water Music, commissioned by King George I in 1717, delights the listener three centuries later. Two popular quintets by Malcolm Arnold and Viktor Ewald display the amazing range of this infrequently heard genre. Keyboard joins the mix with Charles Knox’s buoyant Music for Brass Quintet and Piano. Finally, John Cheetham’s cheeky Scherzo calls the quintet back for a sassy, brassy encore.

At the center of this concert is a new composition for wind ensemble by Sacramento-based composer Shuying Li titled Luminance, which the UC Davis Concert Band helped commission thanks to the Rucker Family Trust’s Endowed Fund for Concert Band Support. The composer writes of her piece, “At its core, the work addresses issues relevant to contemporary society. By exploring themes of hope and despair, inclusion and exclusion, and power and powerlessness, the piece seeks to provide a platform for reflection and conversation. Through its use of evocative tonalities and dynamic contrasts, Luminance aims to inspire audiences to find strength in moments of darkness and embrace the light within themselves. Luminance will have been premiered by The President’s Own United States Marine Band in October, 2023.

Join us for an extraordinary musical experience as the sensational saxophonist and BBC presenter Jess Gillam returns to Worthing. This event will feature a captivating performance of Barbara Thompson’s Saxophone Concerto. Barbara Thompson, a pioneering figure in the jazz world, was known for her band Paraphernalia and her performances with the acclaimed jazz/rock band Colosseum.

The program also includes iconic scores by John Williams, one of Hollywood’s most famous film composers, with pieces from Star Wars and E.T. Additionally, Malcolm Arnold’s Sixth Symphony, composed during his time in St Merryn, near Padstow, will be performed. This symphony includes allusions to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, an elegiac slow movement, and a rousing finale that nods to Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.

**About Jess Gillam:**
Hailing from Ulverston in Cumbria, Jess Gillam is known for her outstanding talent and infectious personality. She made history as the first saxophonist to reach the finals of BBC Young Musician and the youngest soloist to perform at the Last Night of the Proms. Jess is passionate about inspiring and bringing joy to people through music, and she invites audiences on journeys of musical discovery through her electrifying performances and eclectic programming.

In addition to her performances, Jess is a presenter on TV and Radio, hosting her own weekly show, "This Classical Life," on BBC Radio 3, which won the ARIA Award for Best Specialist Music Show in 2020. She has also presented for BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, and BBC Proms, and has been a guest presenter for BBC Young Musician.

Jess is the first saxophonist to be signed exclusively to Decca Classics, with both of her albums reaching No. 1 in the UK Classical Music Charts. She has received numerous accolades, including a Classic BRIT Award and an M.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2021 for Services to Music.

In medieval times, Croydon was famous for its funfair. People would come from far and wide to browse the stalls and enjoy the entertainment, and the area came to be known as the Fair Field. When Fairfield Halls opened on this site in 1962, this formalised its centuries-old status as the entertainment centre of south London. In 1988, LMP became the Resident Orchestra at Fairfield Halls and Croydon. Our arrival built on the area’s strong tradition of classical music, found also in the form of composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor who lived here over a hundred years ago.

Never has heartbreak sounded more haunting. Our Principal Brass Quintet opens the concerts with engaging selections including Bernstein’s Dance Suite. Through Songs of a Wayfarer, Roderick Williams becomes a young man mourning the loss of his beloved, and the Philharmonic performs a new work by the “utterly original” (The New York Times) composer David Hertzberg.
