Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition may have inspired more arrangements than any other piece in the classical canon, but this performance eschews the most famous by Ravel for a more intimate version for String Quartet. Illustrious members of the NBSO brass ring in the holiday season with a spectacular program of classic and contemporary works. Handel’s Water Music, commissioned by King George I in 1717, delights the listener three centuries later. Two popular quintets by Malcolm Arnold and Viktor Ewald display the amazing range of this infrequently heard genre. Keyboard joins the mix with Charles Knox’s buoyant Music for Brass Quintet and Piano. Finally, John Cheetham’s cheeky Scherzo calls the quintet back for a sassy, brassy encore.

At the center of this concert is a new composition for wind ensemble by Sacramento-based composer Shuying Li titled Luminance, which the UC Davis Concert Band helped commission thanks to the Rucker Family Trust’s Endowed Fund for Concert Band Support. The composer writes of her piece, “At its core, the work addresses issues relevant to contemporary society. By exploring themes of hope and despair, inclusion and exclusion, and power and powerlessness, the piece seeks to provide a platform for reflection and conversation. Through its use of evocative tonalities and dynamic contrasts, Luminance aims to inspire audiences to find strength in moments of darkness and embrace the light within themselves. Luminance will have been premiered by The President’s Own United States Marine Band in October, 2023.

**Event Overview:**
Join us for an extraordinary musical experience as the sensational saxophonist and BBC presenter Jess Gillam returns to Worthing. This event will feature a captivating performance of Barbara Thompson’s Saxophone Concerto. Barbara Thompson, a pioneering figure in the jazz world, was known for her band Paraphernalia and her performances with the acclaimed jazz/rock band Colosseum.

The program also includes iconic scores by John Williams, one of Hollywood’s most famous film composers, with pieces from Star Wars and E.T. Additionally, Malcolm Arnold’s Sixth Symphony, composed during his time in St Merryn, near Padstow, will be performed. This symphony includes allusions to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, an elegiac slow movement, and a rousing finale that nods to Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.

**About Jess Gillam:**
Hailing from Ulverston in Cumbria, Jess Gillam is known for her outstanding talent and infectious personality. She made history as the first saxophonist to reach the finals of BBC Young Musician and the youngest soloist to perform at the Last Night of the Proms. Jess is passionate about inspiring and bringing joy to people through music, and she invites audiences on journeys of musical discovery through her electrifying performances and eclectic programming.

In addition to her performances, Jess is a presenter on TV and Radio, hosting her own weekly show, "This Classical Life," on BBC Radio 3, which won the ARIA Award for Best Specialist Music Show in 2020. She has also presented for BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, and BBC Proms, and has been a guest presenter for BBC Young Musician.

Jess is the first saxophonist to be signed exclusively to Decca Classics, with both of her albums reaching No. 1 in the UK Classical Music Charts. She has received numerous accolades, including a Classic BRIT Award and an M.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2021 for Services to Music.

In medieval times, Croydon was famous for its funfair. People would come from far and wide to browse the stalls and enjoy the entertainment, and the area came to be known as the Fair Field. When Fairfield Halls opened on this site in 1962, this formalised its centuries-old status as the entertainment centre of south London. In 1988, LMP became the Resident Orchestra at Fairfield Halls and Croydon. Our arrival built on the area’s strong tradition of classical music, found also in the form of composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor who lived here over a hundred years ago.

In Songs of a Wayfarer you’ll hear Mahler’s affecting blend of joy and despair, as a young man mourns the loss of his beloved in four songs, performed by English baritone Roderick Williams. Never has heartbreak sounded more haunting. Our Principal Brass Quintet opens the concerts with engaging selections including Bernstein’s Dance Suite. Through Songs of a Wayfarer, Roderick Williams becomes a young man mourning the loss of his beloved, and the Philharmonic performs a new work by the “utterly original” (The New York Times) composer David Hertzberg.

Saturday Matinee: Mahler's 'Songs of a Wayfarer'

Two eloquent champions of their respective instruments, fearless in their pursuit of engaging repertoire and fresh artistic adventures, unite for a lunchtime programme that spans an oceanwide expanse of musical styles and moods. MILOŠ sets the scene with the debonair Prelude to Mexican composer Manuel Ponce’s homage to Bach’s near-contemporary, the lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss, with Ksenija Sidorova’s accordion virtuosity enhancing their recital’s energy quotient with her dazzling Piazzolla reflections.

“This symphony describes my children” was how Malcolm Arnold described his Seventh Symphony, and he never wrote anything more personal. By turns explosive, tender and hauntingly sad, it’s an unforgettable experience. There’s a reason why Arnold is regarded by many as Britain’s greatest postwar symphonist, and Sakari Oramo believes that it’s an unsung masterpiece.

A sonic feast of different textures and moods — there's something for everyone on this program that samples music from the 18th to the 21st centuries. Though named after a characteristically light and free-spirited symphony by Joseph Haydn, you'll also get to hear a high-energy double concerto between two violins cascading over each other in an Escheresque climb, a quintet for woodwinds that seems to bend the very air the players breathe, and an ethereal meditation for string orchestra.
