At the beginning of 1819, Gaetano Donizetti was a 22yearold composer who had just made his debut the previous year . He was linked to the wandering company of the impresario Paolo Zancla and was strongly bound to Bortolomeo Merelli, from Bergamo like him and at the time a librettist, before he became one of the most important and successful Italian impresarios of the nineteenth century. During the Carnival season of 1818-19, Zancla’s company was in Mantua to stage Clotilde by Coccia, which however had a disastrous outcome: the prima donna was thrown on stage not only cooked pears, but even an incendiary piece that luckily only burnt the edge of her costume instead of setting the entire theatre on fire. As a response, Zancla staged Ross ini’s L’italiana in Algeri and summoned to Mantua the young creative couple MerelliDonizetti, who pro duced Le nozze in villa, a typical opera buffa of the time, based on a comedy by Kotzebue translated into Italian as I provinciali. Little is known about the outcome of the opera; it was probably a fiasco, al though it was revived in Treviso in the spring of 1820 and then in Genoa two years later . The work also presents numerous textual problems, starting with the fact that there is no autograph copy, that the musical sources are dispersed and that the quintet of the second act, “Aura gentil, che mormori”, is com pletely missing . As part of the #Donizetti200 pro ject, the Festival will present the first modern perfor mance of this title, which has remained, until today, quite “mysterious” (very few sources speak about it). The quintet is no longer missing, because it was newly by Elio and Rocco Tanica with the collabora tion of Enrico Melozzi. The production is inspired by philological criteria for the musical part, with the use of the tuning fork of the time and “historically informed” instrumentalists, and by references to current events for the scenic part. The aim is to retrieve the satiric and funny work that Donizetti tried to offer to the difficult Mantuan audience, always remaining in the wake of the most illustrious com poser of his time, Rossini, who is the obvious model for the Nozze in Villa. This is a further step in the re discovery of Donizetti’s works, as we are aware that the more Donizetti is known the bettr.

A milestone in the history of musical theatre, Lucia di Lammermoor was born from the encounter between the sensibility of Italian melodrama and the gothic atmosphere of Walter Scott’s novel. Director Yannis Kokkos, who originally staged this production in 2023 under the baton of Riccardo Chailly, sees the opera as a ruthless hunt in which the victim is driven toward the depths of madness—evoked by Donizetti through the ethereal sound of the glass harmonica. The revival is entrusted to Speranza Scappucci, a conductor well-versed in bel canto, who made her La Scala debut with Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. The cast features distinguished voices: alongside the leads—Rosa Feola, Pene Pati, and Boris Pinkhasovich—is Michele Pertusi as a commanding Raimondo.

In Byzantium, the chorus announces the return of Belisario, who has triumphed over the Goths. In the meantime, the leader’s wife, Antonina, tells Eutropio about Alessi, the son she and Belisario had and who died as soon as he was born. The slave Proclo had revealed to her that it was Belisario who had ordered him to kill Alessi; but he, not having the heart to do so, had abandoned him on a deserted beach. Antonina is determined to take her revenge by ordering a plot against her husband. Justinian receives his general. Among the prisoners is the young Alamiro, who is set free by Belisario. But Alamiro wants to remain at the side of Belisario, to whom he feels bound by a mysterious bond. Belisario announces that he will keep the young man with him, as if he were his lost son. But in the meantime, Antonina’s revenge is being carried out. While Belisario’s daughter, Irene, embraces her father, Eutropio arrives and publicly accuses him of conspiracy, showing forged documents as proof. Belisario calls Antonina as a witness; she not only confirms the accusation but also forces him to make a more shameful confession: the murder of their son. Belisario tells of a dream, in which Alessi had appeared to him as predestined to ruin their homeland.

Don Pasquale, head of the independent Studio da Corneto, is about to retire. Everyone expects him to hand the studio over to his nephew Ernesto, a screenwriter of sword‑and‑sandal epics. Pasquale objects when he learns Ernesto is involved with Norina, a struggling actress living on Rome’s outskirts. To teach the old man a lesson, the savvy agent Malatesta engineers a romantic ruse, casting Norina in a starring role. "L'elisir d'amore" is a masterpiece by Gaetano DONIZETTI, best known for his bel canto operas. It is the story of Nemorino, a youth who hears the story of how a potion made Tristan und Isolde fall in love and sets out to woo Adina, the most beautiful woman in the village. The music itself directly conveys the characters of Nemorino, the lead character, unable to convey his love as he feels it, and of Adina whose heart is in a tumult for love. At every turn we get a real feel for DONIZETTI's skill, such as in the supreme musical moment in the opera when Nemorino sings "Una furtiva lagrima", or in the bright and distinctive Sergeant Belcore, the villain of the piece, or in Dr. Dulcamara's witty personality. The lively voice of the chorus further rouses the mood on stage. This production by Cesare LIEVI (first staged in 2009) saw the appearance of props like a 9-meter-long book and huge letters of the alphabet, and an actual-size small airplane, earning it a reputation for playfulness and on-the-mark psychological portrayals.

When a company of soldiers, led by the macho Belcore, arrives in the village, time is of the essence, as Adina seems to take a liking to the self-confident sergeant. Just at that moment, the traveling physician Dulcamara arrives in the village, praising his medicine, which is supposed to cure all ailments. From him, Nemorino buys a bottle of Isolde's legendary love potion. Admittedly, Dulcamara has sold him nothing but a bottle of red wine, but to the quack's surprise, after a few complications, the drink achieves its desired result and unites the young lovers.

Scotland in the 17th century: Lucia Ashton loves Edgardo, a member of the rival Ravenswood family. After a change of power, her brother Enrico finds himself on the wrong side: only Lucia's marriage to the nobleman Arturo can save him from losing his power and his life. The wedding is performed under duress. But the guests are treated to a scene of horror when Lucia emerges from the bridal chamber covered in blood: she has stabbed her husband.

Tristano e Isotta – Tristan and Isolde set an example: Nemorino has the evident idea to boost the feelings of his beloved Adina with a love potion. The charlatan Dulcamara sees his chance for a good deal and sells a bottle of the pretended potion to the unhappy lover...

The doting Nemorino loves Adina. Hopelessly. Because she seems to only have eyes for the boastful Belcore. And anyway, Adina would rather live free and unattached. A magic potion is needed that will make the other person fall in love. How convenient that the miracle doctor Dulcamara has a cure for everything and, for his already scarce money, talks Nemorino into buying a love potion. As it turns out, it's just ordinary red wine.

La Fille du régiment, or the “regiment’s daughter”, is what they call the young Marie, who was found when just a child on the battlefield by soldiers. The troops commit to raising the evidently abandoned girl themselves. A young man of course must soon enter the scene and stir a special interest in her, and the secret of her origins will soon also be revealed. In the best tradition of French opéra comique, with his team of librettists, Gaetano Donizetti created a piece that in a truly original way combines Alpine idyll, patriotic enthusiasm and romantic love with comic situations and heightened conflicts. While Donizetti’s piece was at times extremely popular, the “regiment’s daughter” faded from favour somewhat in the 20th century. It can now be rediscovered, from the famous overture right through to the both amusing and cryptic music, in its first new production at the Bayerische Staatsoper in almost ninety years.

It is the largest charity event of its kind organised by the German Red Cross in Germany: the festive opera gala of the Duisburg Red Cross is a highlight in the social life of the city and is in demand far beyond its borders. Soloists from the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of chief conductor Vitali Alekseenok will once again present a glittering musical programme for the 19th edition, waiving their fees in aid of the DRK.

Into the village square arrives a flamboyantly dressed traveling doctor and charlatan, Dulcamara, selling all kinds of potions. Naturally, the love potion attracts the most attention, and a line quickly forms. Nemorino asks for the very elixir that inflamed Isolde’s heart. Dulcamara obliges – for a hefty price – but the “potion” turns out to be nothing more than wine. Slightly drunk, Nemorino again declares his love to Adina, but she, out of spite, agrees to marry Sergeant Belcore.

Composed in the autumn of 1833, Lucrezia Borgia debuted at the Teatro alla Scala on 26 December of the same year. The source is the homonymous drama by Victor Hugo that Felice Romani, author of the libretto, arranged in a prologue and two acts. It was Donizetti himself who suggested to Romani that he make an opera libretto from Hugo's drama, attracted as much by the high-tension situations present in the text as by the dark atmospheres that surround the story.

Etelka Polgár's concept explores the secretive world of wealthy businessman Don Pasquale, who secretly owns an arcade salon—a meeting place for drag balls and social games. He is supported by his best friend Malatesta, his nephew Ernesto, and his tech-savvy love Norina, who together form his adopted family.

Opera Rara launches its 55th Season with a Salon Concert on Friday 10 October 2025 with Argentinean baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara and pianist Anna Tilbrook in partnership with Temple Music Foundation. Enjoy an evening of little-known songs by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) side by side with those of Argentinean composers Juan Pedro Esnaola (1808-1878), Julián Aguirre (1868-1924), Carlos López Buchardo (1881-1948), Celia Torrá (1889-1962), Alberto Williams (1862-1952) and Ana Carrique (1886-1978).

A graduate of the Royal Ballet and Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artist Programme, Alcántara made his Opera Rara debut as Simon Boccanegra in the charity’s revival of the original 1857 version of Verdi’s opera with The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder. Many of the rare Argentinian songs he has chosen for this evening will have their UK premiere in this concert.

Taking place in the splendid Middle Temple Hall, where Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was first performed, the evening will end with a post-concert reception with the artists – a perfect opportunity to meet the artists and make new friends!

Desperate, Nemorino buys a “love potion“ from the traveling snake oil salesman Dr. Dulcamara, hoping it will win her heart. As Nemorino signs up to be in the traveling rodeo, Adina finally notices his sincere, quiet charm. In the end, it’s Nemorino’s true character—not the potion—that wins her love. Love, comedy, beautiful music and the wild west all rolled into one, in this charming updated production. In Italian with English supertitles.

“From Bohemia to the end of the world” – that's how one could articulate the successful artistic career of tenor Petr Nekoranec, who made his debut in South Africa in August 2024 while in March 2025 he will travel to Brisbane, Australia to make his debut in the Queensland opera house as Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La cenerentola. Petr was born in Nové Dvory by the City of Polná, studied singing in Pardubice, Munich, and New York, performed in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bayreuth, Florence, Teatro Real in Madrid, Warsaw, São Paulo, Brazil, etc. He is also a popular guest of French opera houses such as the Théâtre du Capitole v Toulouse a Opéra national de Lorraine v Nancy. In July 2024 he made his debut at the famous festival in Aix-en-Provence. He is a soloist at the National Theatre Opera, where he added his first ever Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème in the 2024/25 season to the roaster of his many beautiful roles.

Don Pasquale is generally regarded as the high point of the 19th century opera buffa tradition and five accomplished singers will lead us through its plot twists and turns. With the help of his scheming doctor, a foolish but rich old bachelor chases after a young woman so he can produce an heir and disinherit his rebellious nephew, who wants to marry the beautiful Norina, who happens to be the young woman Don Pasquale is after.
