La Fille du régiment, or the “regiment’s daughter”, is what they call the young Marie, who was found when just a child on the battlefield by soldiers. The troops commit to raising the evidently abandoned girl themselves. A young man of course must soon enter the scene and stir a special interest in her, and the secret of her origins will soon also be revealed. In the best tradition of French opéra comique, with his team of librettists, Gaetano Donizetti created a piece that in a truly original way combines Alpine idyll, patriotic enthusiasm and romantic love with comic situations and heightened conflicts. While Donizetti’s piece was at times extremely popular, the “regiment’s daughter” faded from favour somewhat in the 20th century. It can now be rediscovered, from the famous overture right through to the both amusing and cryptic music, in its first new production at the Bayerische Staatsoper in almost ninety years.

Into the village square arrives a flamboyantly dressed traveling doctor and charlatan, Dulcamara, selling all kinds of potions. Naturally, the love potion attracts the most attention, and a line quickly forms. Nemorino asks for the very elixir that inflamed Isolde’s heart. Dulcamara obliges – for a hefty price – but the “potion” turns out to be nothing more than wine. Slightly drunk, Nemorino again declares his love to Adina, but she, out of spite, agrees to marry Sergeant Belcore.

Opera Rara launches its 55th Season with a Salon Concert on Friday 10 October 2025 with Argentinean baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara and pianist Anna Tilbrook in partnership with Temple Music Foundation. Enjoy an evening of little-known songs by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) side by side with those of Argentinean composers Juan Pedro Esnaola (1808-1878), Julián Aguirre (1868-1924), Carlos López Buchardo (1881-1948), Celia Torrá (1889-1962), Alberto Williams (1862-1952) and Ana Carrique (1886-1978).

A graduate of the Royal Ballet and Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artist Programme, Alcántara made his Opera Rara debut as Simon Boccanegra in the charity’s revival of the original 1857 version of Verdi’s opera with The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder. Many of the rare Argentinian songs he has chosen for this evening will have their UK premiere in this concert.

Taking place in the splendid Middle Temple Hall, where Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was first performed, the evening will end with a post-concert reception with the artists – a perfect opportunity to meet the artists and make new friends!

The story follows Nemorino, a shy ranch hand in love with Adina, a tough, independent ranch owner. She’s more interested in Belcore, an arrogant but charming rodeo star. Desperate, Nemorino buys a “love potion“ from the traveling snake oil salesman Dr. Dulcamara, hoping it will win her heart. As Nemorino signs up to be in the traveling rodeo, Adina finally notices his sincere, quiet charm. In the end, it’s Nemorino’s true character—not the potion—that wins her love. Love, comedy, beautiful music and the wild west all rolled into one, in this charming updated production. In Italian with English supertitles.

“From Bohemia to the end of the world” – that's how one could articulate the successful artistic career of tenor Petr Nekoranec, who made his debut in South Africa in August 2024 while in March 2025 he will travel to Brisbane, Australia to make his debut in the Queensland opera house as Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La cenerentola. Petr was born in Nové Dvory by the City of Polná, studied singing in Pardubice, Munich, and New York, performed in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bayreuth, Florence, Teatro Real in Madrid, Warsaw, São Paulo, Brazil, etc. He is also a popular guest of French opera houses such as the Théâtre du Capitole v Toulouse a Opéra national de Lorraine v Nancy. In July 2024 he made his debut at the famous festival in Aix-en-Provence. He is a soloist at the National Theatre Opera, where he added his first ever Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème in the 2024/25 season to the roaster of his many beautiful roles.

After the wedding, in a fit of madness, Lucia murders Arturo and descends into insanity. The opera's climax is marked by Lucia’s famous "mad scene," where she hallucinates about her lost love. The heart of the farm worker Nemorino beats for the landowner Adina. Because she shows no interest at all, he digs deep into his already almost empty pocket and spends his little money on a supposed love potion. But the love potion is only red wine, and Nemorino's plan backfires: Adina doesn't even look at the drunken Nemorino and angrily wants to marry someone else that same day. For the two to get together, even more high-proof elixir is needed - and a good pinch of coincidence and luck. According to legend, the composition of this opera buffa took Gaetano Donizetti less than three weeks - the result is a jewel of bel canto full of melodic inventiveness and sparkling coloraturas.

Love can lead to ridiculous situations, and delightful chaos unfolds in The Elixir of Love when an ardent youth embarks on drastic measures to capture the heart of his beloved. Nemorino, a naive village lad, finds himself deeply smitten with Adina, a young woman of independent mind and means. Determined to win her affections, Nemorino resorts to any means necessary. Weary of his persistent and puppy-like adoration, Adina agrees to marry Belcore, a swaggering sergeant. In desperation, Nemorino seeks the aid of the traveling charlatan Dulcamara, investing his hope and meager finances in a supposed love potion.

Did you enjoy the concert performance of Rossini's operatic fairy tale Cinderella in December 2023? We have another title for you! This time it will be the popular opera Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti. And what can you look forward to? In addition to an absolutely stellar cast?

Don Pasquale is a pure, unadulterated farce with sparkling music and a geyser of humorous scenes that will make you cry - of course, tears of laughter! The wealthy old Don Pasquale wants to prevent his nephew Ernesto from marrying the young and poor widow Norina. He threatens to disinherit Ernesto, which is a problem for Ernesto because without the inheritance he cannot consider getting married. Moreover, Don Pasquale decides to get married himself and calls on Doctor Malatesta for help. However, this decision will cost him dearly! Doctor Malatesta devises a colossal deception, and in the end, Don Pasquale is glad to get rid of his young "wife", who is actually Norina.
