Redwood Symphony presents three unique musical visions, grand and intimate. Respighi’s spectacular arrangement of Bach’s organ work is perhaps the best of its kind. I’m thrilled that Kindra Sharich is joining us, so soon after our 2024-25 triumph in Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony! This time, it’s Mahler at his most personal, prophetic and heartbreaking: Songs on the Death of Children, sung with projected supertitles. Finally, Maestro Eric returns to a work that he believes is the great Polish composer’s magnum opus; it’s unlike anything you’ve heard before and it’s truly wonderful.

Bacewicz’s six-minute Overture for Orchestra, composed during the German occupation of Poland, offers a perpetually shifting palette of colors. Spaniard Joaquin Rodrigo’s animated Concierto de Aranjuez features elaborate orchestration for classical guitar. Lutosławski’s energetic Little Suite for Symphony Orchestra espouses Polish folk tunes, while Borodin’s colorful Symphony No. 2 evokes the exuberance of Russian folk dances.

An album of film music arrangements, the major cello concertos of the repertoire, chamber music with friends, and Persian music with his father: Kian Soltani is an incredibly versatile artist. At the beginning of his meteoric career, he won the highly endowed Paulo Competition in Finland with Witold Lutosławski's Cello Concerto – now he will perform the demanding work in the third of his residency concerts at the Elbphilharmonie, accompanied by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

Israeli conductor Bar Avni and South Korean cellist Hayoung Choi bring female power to the stage – with a program that showcases everything an orchestra has to offer. Bach opens the evening, but not as we know it: Ottorino Respighi takes the famous Passacaglia to a new level, orchestrating it grandly and majestically, with new colors and nuances. Then comes Witold Lutosławski's Cello Concerto! Not a classical solo concerto, but a dramatic duel, orchestra against soloist, complete with attacks, lyrical moments, and explosive eruptions of sound. A musical exchange in which every note is charged with high tension. And finally: Tchaikovsky's Pathétique. His last work – and arguably his most personal. Nine days after the premiere, he died under mysterious circumstances. The final movement sounds like a requiem: deeply sad, somber, and moving. It couldn't be more dramatic.

Vast Scandinavian snowfields and impenetrable pine forests meet a blazing musical spirit in Jean Sibelius's alluring Symphony No. 5. British maestro Nicholas Collon, chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony, makes his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut, along with the young cello firebrand Kian Soltani. Witness Soltani's superhuman artistry as he tackles Lutosławski's blisteringly virtuosic Cello Concerto. The concert opens with the ASO debut of Outi Tarkianien's mystical symphonic poem The Ring of Fire and Love.

This concert celebrates Jonny Greenwood’s love of orchestral string writing. In Water, the warmth of the Hallé strings envelopes two flutes and an Indian tanpura on a journey of rippling colour. Lutosławski dedicated his moving Musique funèbre to the pioneering composer Bela Bartók whilst Steve Reich’s lyrical Pulse is a tenderly contemplative, yet constantly pulsating, work. Jonny Greenwood’s groundbreaking Horror Vacui, performed by Daniel Pioro, ‘the violinist making classical music cool’ (The Telegraph), plays upon the artistic concept of ‘the fear of empty spaces’ to astonishing effect. Using the full sonic potential of the solo violin and extensive string orchestra, he creates an eerily liminal soundscape, building in atmosphere and intensity throughout each movement. These are string instruments as you’ve never heard them before.

In the 20th century, the nations of Central Europe experienced both glory and terror – and composers responded with music that blazes with energy and imaginative power. For LPO Principal Conductor Edward Gardner, it’s a source of pure inspiration, and tonight, in the first of two Phoenix Lands concerts, he shares his passion. Janáček retells bloody folktales, Grażyna Bacewicz strikes a note of defiance, and Lutosławski and Martinů each do their own deliriously imaginative thing. These composers have a thousand tales to tell, and with the aid of the superb young Czech violinist Josef Špaček, their story starts here.

Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major is probably the most excitingly orchestrated concerto for a solo instrument with orchestra. Cheerful and brilliant at the same time, it has been a favorite work of concert audiences since its premiere in 1932. It begins furiously with a crack of a whip, created by two pieces of wood connected by a hinge and struck together. The second, slow movement is often referred to as one of the most beautiful 'Songs without Words' in music history. It is embedded in the surreal circus atmosphere of the first movement with hints of Ravel's Basque homeland, blues and jazz souvenirs from his trips to America, and the rapid finale in the style of a perpetuum mobile. "La valse" by Ravel probably needs no description - the symphonic waltz is one of the most popular works of the 20th century and regularly excites the audience. The Concerto for Orchestra by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski can also arouse enthusiasm. It was premiered with great success in Warsaw in 1954 and is the last work in which Lutosławski uses folkloric elements. With it, the composer has said everything he had to say in this musical language...

Hector Berlioz’s second symphonic work takes us to Italy. Accompanying us will be Lord Byron’s romantic hero Harold, whose voice will be Amihai Grosz, the principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Upon returning from the musical universe of Witold Lutosławski, we will hear Beethoven’s majestic Eroica, originally dedicated by the composer to Napoleon.

In the second part of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Artist in Residence, we meet the British conductor Nicolas Collon and the Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling, who, together with the Radio Symphony Orchestra, perform Salonen's great inspiration, Maurice Ravel's song cycle Shéhérazade with text from One Thousand and One Nights. Additionally, the Swedish premiere of Salonen's piece Gemini for large orchestra, followed by Witold Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra. The Orchestra opens its exciting season with Composition Chair David Conte’s evocative Sinfonietta in a celebration of the long-time faculty member’s birthday. Prélude à l’après-midi d’une faune is one of Debussy’s most famous works while Iberia is a vibrant and evocative piece that vividly portrays Spanish scenes and atmosphere through his signature impressionistic style. This concert also features student guest conductor Chih-Yao Chang.

Beethoven opens his Violin Concerto with only a motif in the timpani – a far cry from the sound of the solo violin. This already heralds the innovative nature of this concerto: the virtuoso solo part is no longer the sole focus; the violin and orchestra meet as equal partners. Thus, Beethoven ultimately lays the blueprint for the great symphonic instrumental concertos of the 19th century. For the renowned violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, the work is a showcase piece, with which he has already performed on the concert stage in all the world's major music centers.

A Romantic classic meets two 20th-century masterworks in a concert of widescreen orchestral drama. From its thunderous opening chords to its heartbreaking slow movement, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is an emotional tour de force. Ukraine-born Vadym Kholodenko joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Conductor Laureate Tadaaki Otaka. Framing the concerto are two orchestral showpieces: Bacewicz’s vibrant Concerto for String Orchestra – whose motoric outer movements contrast with a sublime Andante – and the daring invention of Lutosławski’s folk-inspired Concerto for Orchestra.

In 2023, the great Finnish composer died in her adopted home of Paris. Together with violinist Carolin Widmann, the SWR Symphony Orchestra remembers this magician of intermediate and microtones.

The medieval verses of the Marian sequence Stabat mater seem like a symbol of mourning that has endured for ages. Once sung in unison and humbly, the Stabat mater has inspired generations of composers, including the Pole Karol Szymanowski in 1926, whose oratorio-like Stabat mater incorporated elements of Polish folk and church music. Geographically and thematically close to each other are Pēteris Vasks' political and personal mourning work of the Musica dolorosa , Arvo Pärt's meditation on the Shroud of Turin and Witold Lutosławski's short Lacrimosa from the image-rich death sequence of the Dies irae.

Spotlight Artist Jan Lisiecki, one of the foremost interpreters of Chopin, brings to life the emotive depths of the composer’s First Piano Concerto. Maurice Ravel's imaginative and even humorous La valse is a tribute to the waltz and Johann Strauss II. Originally, the working title for this music was "Vienne", then he changed it from the French spelling to German, "Wien", before finally deciding that the fitting title would be La valse. Ravel and Argentine Alberto Ginastera frame the program, the latter with fiery dance in the form of Malambo.

One concert, two Queen Elisabeth Competition winners. Many listeners are familiar with Piet Jozef Swerts (winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition 1987), who twice composed the required piece for the prestigious competition. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra invited him to create a new symphonic work inspired by Flemish musical heritage. The result is a delightful homage to Josquin Desprez, keeping the music of the Flemish polyphonist alive.

The great Polish composer Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994) wrote his Cello Concerto for the famous Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and it was premiered in London in 1970. It’s a witty and beguiling piece which begins with a five-minute cello solo which is then noisily interrupted by interjections from the brass. Our soloist is a current BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, the Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia.

Rachmaninov’s majestic First Symphony churns with youthful romantic fervor and ethereal mystery — perfect for a December outing. Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, inspired by Norway’s national folk hero, includes the instantly familiar dream-like fantasy of “The Hall of the Mountain King.” Johannes Moser brings his “remarkably visceral and vivid playing” (Gramophone) to Lutosławski’s wild and enchanting Cello Concerto.

Mozart wrote in a letter to his father that death is »the true, best friend of man« – which for Manfred Honeck is a »profound and significant statement«. The internationally sought-after conductor is known for his unmistakable and trend-setting style – and is also a charismatic and passionate artist who loves emotional depth: »If I had the choice between technical precision and emotional music, I would always choose the music.« The former violist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who once began his conducting career as Claudio Abbado’s assistant, has been a regular guest of ours for more than 30 years. This led to an intimate friendship – and as a result, he is now officially performing his first concert as our new honorary conductor. We are delighted to be performing one of his favourite programmes with him on Eternity Sunday, which is very moving and will certainly give food for thought: The equally »mysterious and divine moments« in Mozart's last work – the otherworldly beautiful requiem from 1791, which the composer worked on until his early death at the age of just 35 and was unable to complete. Manfred Honeck breaks the ritualistic confessional music abruptly at precisely that point after eight bars in the »Lacrimosa« – and complements and combines it in an incredibly comforting way with other poignant sound creations, texts from powerful biblical passages, letters by Mozart, poems, Gregorian chorales and the urging ringing of bells.

A ‘concerto for birds and orchestra’, Rautavaara’s ‘Cantus Arcticus’ blends recorded birdsong from the Arctic Circle with hauntingly beautiful orchestral music. This is followed by Lutosławski’s compelling and atmospheric Fourth Symphony which packs a dazzling variety of sounds into a brief but eventful two movements. Folk-inspired ‘Suita Rustica’ by Kaprálová draws on traditional Moravian melodies to create a colourful and energetic tribute to her Czech heritage. The evening ends with Martinů’s big-hearted Fourth Symphony, written in America in 1945, an optimistic work brimming with lyrical melodies.

In the middle of the 20th century, composers Benjamin Britten and Witold Lutosławski were kindred creative spirits, and each crafted ravishing, dream-haunted tapestries of song for a handful of instruments and the tenor voice of Peter Pears. One of Britain’s greatest living tenors, Mark Padmore, assumes his mantle today, at the dark heart of this typically imaginative programme from Ryan Wigglesworth. Mozart opens the evening in a blaze of sunlight, and Schumann’s most personal symphony brings it to a close: strong emotions, spoken with love.

Sebastian Manz, celebrated for his beautiful intonation and technical prowess, and Danae Dörken, known for her breathtaking technique and musical depth, promise to deliver performances that will resonate long after the final note. Our summer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church comes to a close with a program in which Principal Horn Jessica Danz showcases her instrument’s elegance in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4—jubilant, playful, and filled with the reminiscent sounds of hunting calls. Danz then conquers Villanelle, written by Dukas as a challenging exam piece for horn, sharing the soul and virtuosity of the instrument. The evening begins with Lutoslawski’s Overture, where the sharp sounds of the strings fill the intimate venue with an intensity that directly contrasts with the work that follows, Françaix’s light and delightful Sérénade. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 brings the concert to a rousing “end”—only to quietly resume after four measures of silence, giving Haydn the last word with this classic joke.

Who would have thought that 13th-century monks could dream up such naughty poems? But they did. And the discovery of their dusty manuscripts sent the 20th-century composer Carl Orff down the proverbial rabbit hole. He dreamed up a hair-raising cantata in Carmina Burana—and the rest is history. Soloists Janai Brugger, Miles Mykkanen, and Anthony Clark Evans join the internationally acclaimed Atlanta Symphony Chorus to sing this curiously beguiling homage to springtime and earthly pleasure. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the debut of Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański. The program includes the irresistibly tuneful—and rarely-performed—Concerto for Orchestra by his fellow countryman Witold Lutosławski.

Geradezu manisch beginnt Witold Lutosławskis klanggewaltiges »Konzert für Orchester« mit den immer gleichen Paukenschlägen über 38 Takte hinweg, und Samuel Barbers Violinkonzert endet in einem rasend schnellen, mechanistischem Perpetuum mobile. Eine atemraubende Tour de Force in Tönen. Gut, dass da die Dirigentin dieses Programms vom Leistungssport kommt – dem hatte sich die Polin Marta Gardolinska jedenfalls gewidmet, bevor die Musik ihre Profession wurde. »Unsere Arbeit ist der von Sportlern sehr ähnlich«, sagt sie. »Sie ist sehr intensiv, und für ein langes Konzert braucht man einfach viel Körperkraft.« Doch bevor sie das hr-Sinfonieorchester durch das kratzbürstige Barber-Finale steuert, wird erst einmal kräftig spätromantisch eingeseift. Als sein »Seifenkonzert« hat Samuel Barber sein Violinkonzert ja selbst bezeichnet, aber nicht wegen des lyrisch-gesanglichen Schäumens der ersten beiden Sätze. Vielmehr weil es finanziert wurde von einem amerikanischen Industriellen, dem Produzenten der Fels-Naptha-Haushaltsseife. Als Solistin kann man hier die junge Geigerin Maria Ioudenitch erleben, die derzeit bei Christian Tetzlaff an der Kronberg Academy studiert.

Brahms’ German Requiem, which explores the grief and yearning experienced after the loss of a loved one, opens with a hushed and somber sound before transitioning to a comforting and ultimately triumphant mood. As is suggested by its title, the work is unique in its use of the German language, utilizing biblical text hand-selected by the composer rather than the traditional Catholic Latin text.

Experience the “brilliant and incisive” (Chicago Tribune) Gil Shaham in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, ever popular for its mix of vigor and finesse. Richard Strauss’ tone poem explores the ultimate mystery of death and what might lie beyond. Lutosławski’s 1954 Concerto for Orchestra is a symphonic showpiece that draws on Polish folk songs and Baroque forms.

We luxuriate in endless shades of sound in a program that centers around the world premiere of internationally renowned and Eugene-based composer Pius Cheung’s Hibiki (Colors of Resonance), performed by marimba virtuoso Eriko Daimo. The textures and timbres of the orchestra are on full display as they perform Hildur Guðnadóttir’s meditative People Get Faces and Claude Debussy’s fantastical and poetic Prélude, before each section of the orchestra is celebrated in Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra.

The first of three Sinfonietta Nova concerts will feature London Sinfonietta's Jonathan Morton. The concert will take you on a journey through the raw and palpable power of Krzysztof Penderecki, the eerie and unsettling undercurrent of the Oscar-winning soundtrack 'There Will Be Blood' to the unistic and deeply layered style of composer Zygmunt Krauze, who will sit at the piano.

Grammy-winning conductor Cristian Măcelaru joins the CSO for music of two Slavic luminaries. Cellist Kian Soltani brings his expressive and charismatic presence to Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto, frequently interpreted as an escalating struggle between the seemingly heroic soloist and the orchestra representing totalitarian authority. The acclaim and popularity of his Symphony No. 11 helped Shostakovich, who had weathered criticism and persecution from the Soviet regime, win back State approval. It offers a depiction of the 1905 Russian Revolution, from the first shots of Bloody Sunday to funeral marches lamenting those who were lost.

There’s a special kinship between Scotland and Poland – two nations with stirring histories and dauntless spirits. Grażyna Bacewicz stood her own ground in a time of tyranny, writing music as characterful as it is defiant. Karol Szymanowski imagined new realms of musical sensuality, and the dazzling young South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim is passionate about his silken, shimmering First Violin Concerto. Then, to finish, Witold Lutosławski launches fabulous musical fireworks into the grey skies of communist Poland. Fiery, playful, and utterly original his Concerto for Orchestra is one of post-war music’s true showstoppers, and it’s a special favourite of guest conductor Marta Gardolińska. She won’t hold back today.
