Having met Josef Suk in Berlin, Jean Sibelius called him “a superb musician” in a letter. 90 years have passed since the death of the former, and the latter was born 160 years ago. Commemorating the anniversaries of both composers is the Czech Philharmonic’s principal guest conductor Jakub Hrůša, who calls Suk the love of his life.

In this non-traditional programme, we will hear the Czech premiere of Carolyn by the Sea by Bryce Dessner. The composer himself will play one of the solo parts in this double concerto for guitar. Then we will remember a favourite of Dessner, Benjamin Britten, who takes us to the stormy coast of East Anglia. However, we begin and end with a favourite composer of Jakub Hrůša: Josef Suk.

A captivating programme unfolds with the soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, showcasing a rich blend of Czech and French musical traditions. Dvořák’s Terzetto in C major brings a lively, spirited trio to life, followed by Suk’s deeply emotional Meditation on the old Czech Hymn ‘St Wenceslas’, a tribute to Czech heritage. A toast to defiance! Nothing inspires creativity more than the will to resist. Take, for example, when Josef Suk writes variations on the secret national anthem of the Czechs on the eve of World War I. Or when Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach lets loose in his D minor concerto, while his employer, Frederick II, prefers galant tones. Further examples are the serenade with which Hugo Wolf responded to the failure of his overture to the opera "Penthesilea": a Mediterranean serenade with the motto "just don't let yourself be defeated." And the Opus 4 of the frustrated college student Benjamin Britten: His "Simple Symphony" consists of musical snippets he composed when he was 10 or 12 years old...

"I am extremely happy, it went very quickly," wrote Antonín Dvořák under the heading of his 12th String Quartet, the sketch of which he completed in just a few days. The natural idyll of rural Spillville inspired him so deeply during his stay in the USA that the composition came easily. Along with his Ninth Symphony, "From the New World," which was also written in America, this string quartet is one of his most famous works. Dvořák's soulful chamber music provides a positive moment of calm in the Alinde Quintet's otherwise melancholic program: in arrangements for wind quintet, the up-and-coming Czech ensemble explores the emotional complexity of Josef Suk's elegiac, pleading meditation, Pēteris Vask's composition "For a Deceased Friend," and Shostakovich's plaintive Eighth String Quartet.

Since the earliest days of the Baroque trio sonata, the combination of three instruments has produced dialogue and drama. Trio performers move seamlessly between playing as one, accompanying each other, and shining as soloists. "My Praguers understand me." Cast in bronze and mounted as a plaque on Prague's Estates Theatre, this expression of Mozart's affection for the Bohemian capital stands proud. While it's not documented whether he actually put it in these exact words, there is no doubt about his deep affection for Prague and its inhabitants. It must have been love at first sight when he first traveled to the Vltava in 1787 and received an exceptionally warm welcome.

Makato Ozone delivers his "thrilling, unabashedly personal rendition" (New York Times) of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue — a jazzy, kaleidoscopic tribute to the kinetic energy of America's cities in the 1920s. And composed the same year as the Gershwin, Bartók's Miraculous Mandarin channels the turmoil of post–World War I Europe in a scandalous tale of sex, violence, and the supernatural.

At the age of 15, Constantin Heise won the national competition "Jugend musiziert" with the highest score. Two years later, he won first prize in the international music competition "Augustin Aponte" in Tenerife and was one of the youngest participants to reach the semi-finals of the renowned Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. At just ten years of age, he made his debut as a concert soloist with the Zielona Góra Philharmonic. As a chamber and orchestral musician, he has performed at such important festivals as the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the Beethoven Festival in Bonn and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. He has performed as a soloist with the Jena Philharmonic, the Orchestre Royale de Chambre de Wallonie and the Brandenburg State Orchestra in Frankfurt, among others. His musical and family roots lie in Frankfurt. His father, Jens Heise, is a violinist with us in the BSOF. Constantin Heise received his first cello lessons from our leader Moritz Kuhn.

Jakub Hrůša and the Czech Philharmonic Youth Orchestra not only see “eye to eye” but hear “ear to ear” as well. After their first collaboration last season, they set out together this time for Arabia of the Middle Ages in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. In the second half of the programme, the Czech Philharmonic and its Principal Guest Conductor join forces with three vocal soloists and the Prague Philharmonic Choir for Josef Suk’s Epilogue, the finale of his symphonic tetralogy.

This vibrant matinee concert brings together three distinctive voices from Eastern Europe, beginning with Bela Bartók’s set of seven piquant miniatures. Josef Suk was both son-in-law and student to Dvořák and an accomplished composer of highly evocative music. His Meditation on the old Czech hymn ‘St Wenceslas’, took its inspiration from the twelfth century, and was an emotive patriotic statement at a time of conflict with neighbouring Austria.

This year the music world is celebrating not only Bruckner's 200th birthday, but also the 200th birthday of Bedřich Smetana. In the tragic life of the Bohemian composer, the death of his four-year-old daughter was a devastating event. The G minor piano trio, which was written immediately after the family catastrophe, is the painful expression of a grieving father. Joseph Haydn wrote not only his famous last symphonies in London, but also important chamber music. He composed the light-footed C major piano trio for the London-based German pianist Therese Jansen, who was praised for her flawless technique. A sculptor friend of the composer said of Bohuslav Martinů's first piano trio, which has the subtitle "Cinq pièces brèves", that it sounded as if it had been "carved from marble" - a description that Martinů found "very fitting". South of Prague, high above the Vltava River, stands Vyšehrad, the fortress mountain that is the subject of numerous myths and legends. Josef Suk created a special homage to Vyšehrad with his Elegy op. 23. The solemn piece served as a prelude to a tableau vivant, a "living picture" in which actors in frozen poses depicted the sunset at Vyšehrad.

Solo appearances by players of the Czech Philharmonic are always special, so it is with great pleasure that they are presented as part of the Czech Chamber Music Society seasons. For this second recital in this series, the main performers are the concertmaster of the cello section Václav Petr and an up-and-coming figure of the younger generation of pianists Marek Kozák. Their programme will link works of different centuries, styles, and countries.

The British pianist and composer has shown a predilection for rare repertoire, especially from the Romantic period and the 20th Century, which has seen him champion such figures as the Austrian Egon Kornauth (1891-1959) and the Ukrainian Felix Blumenfeld (1863-1931). International Record Review found his interpretations on CD of the former ‘most engaging and enterprising ... [he] is a most perceptive advocate of this music.’

At this year’s Velvet Revolution Concert, three fantastic younger generation artists will take centre stage. Violinist Josef Špaček performs music by Suk, and Antoine Tamestit will play Martinů’s Rhapsody-Concerto on the very first viola made by Antonio Stradivari. Petr Popelka returns for the second time to conduct the Czech Philharmonic, and rounding off the Czech programme are works by Smetana and Janáček.

»Yes, just love him, love him so much – but don’t forget that he achieved poetic freedom after years of study, go back to the foundation of his work, don’t prove his genius through the last symphony!« Schumann said this about Beethoven – and it is indeed the case that the Symphony No. 4, which Jakub Hrůša has chosen for this programme, is often treated somewhat like a Cinderella among the nine symphonies. Quite wrongly, because it is an equally masterful composition: it stands in B flat major, which is an expression of the »yearning for a better world« according to the symbolism of musical keys of a certain Mr Schubart, and is characterised by a friendly tone with many wonderful ideas. Our Chief Conductor combines it with an equally neglected piece from the pen of his beloved composer Dvořák. We will be playing the fascinating piano concerto together with the acclaimed pianist Daniil Trifonov: the wide-ranging work was premiered in Prague in 1878 and features a magnificent richness of deeply felt inspirations. We will first present the programme in Bamberg, but then also in Linz – and also travel to the birthplace of Jakub Hrůša, where we have something to celebrate: 1924 was the first time that the »Year of Czech Music« was celebrated. It goes without saying that we have to be there, and our luggage includes the two pieces that were played at the opening concert of the year-long festival in Brno – on the occasion of Josef Suk’s 50th birthday and Janáček’s 70th birthday. In other words, music by two more of our Chief Conductor’s favourite artists: The magnificent autobiographical tone poem »Zrání« and the sparkling orchestral rhapsody »Taras Bulba«.

Pro Arte’s 47th season opens with Louisville-based conductor Gabriel Lefkowitz leading an expressive program for the strings, principal clarinetist Ian Greitzer, and principal bassoonist Ronald Haroutunian. In her Canyons, from 2018, Tanner Porter paints nature at its most jagged, imposing, and majestic. A work like no other, Richard Strauss’s vibrant Duett-Concertino features writing so organic, its solo clarinet and bassoon seem to become living, breathing characters. Although Josef Suk’s warm Serenade was a departure from his melancholy style, it won him early critical acclaim from Johannes Brahms and positioned him as the successor to his teacher Antonín Dvořák, and it brings this first concert to an elegant close.

With his fantastic Scherzo, the Czech Josef Suk, student and son-in-law of Antonín Dvořák, created an orchestral work that is particularly lively - and in no way inferior in expressiveness to the following Divertimento from Stravinsky's ballet "The Kiss of the Fairy".

Gorgeous late-romantic soundscapes – featuring works by Josef Suk and Leoš Janáček, who are among Jakub Hrůša’s favourite composers. It is thus a matter of the heart for him to regularly introduce audiences to pieces by these fascinating composers that are still relatively unknown outside the Czech Republic. The captivating »Asrael« Symphony already delivered proof of how well this works – and Josef Suk is also being celebrated this year on the occasion of his 150th birthday with an imposing musical autobiography: the programme includes his tone poem »Zráni«, finished in 1917, revolving around human maturity and elevating love to the core aspiration of our existence. Even the conductor of the premiere was absolutely enthusiastic, as he is said to have kissed the score in front of the concert audience and exclaimed in honour of Smetana’s famous cycle: »A second fatherland!« Janáček’s grandiose work was composed at virtually the same time – the scoring of a story about a Cossack culminating in a marvellous apotheosis. Jakub Hrůša fell in love with this composition, as he explained in an interview: »'Taras Bulba' is at the centre of my musical life. I didn't choose it, it just so happened. It was the first work and I’m still in love with it.« The brilliant »Paganini Rhapsody« by Rachmaninov from 1934 – who once answered the question »What is music?« in his typically poetic language: »That which goes from heart to heart, love.« – is also an emotional companion to the two Bohemian pieces.

The concert is one of the programme pillars of the celebration of the current Year of Czech Music. It includes - with the exception of Bedřich Smetana and Bohuslav Martinů, who will be given their place at other concerts of this year's festival - compositions by the world's most renowned Czech composers whose works have become part of the constant repertoire.

When the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořák died, his protégé and son-in-law Josef Suk wrote three movements of a symphony in his mentor’s memory. Then tragedy struck again: Suk’s wife, Dvořák’s own daughter, died too. Added to the long-breathed, lyrical symphony Suk had written came two new movements: a furious scherzo and a transcendental statement of acceptance, finding peace in the beauty and renewal of the natural world.

At the first of two evenings at London’s BBC Proms, the Czech Philharmonic presents core Czech repertoire of which its interpretations are celebrated worldwide. The famous Royal Albert Hall will resound with the music of Dvořák and Suk: the former composer’s Cello Concerto with soloist Anastasia Kobekina will be followed by the latter’s Asrael Symphony. Both pieces will be led by the Czech Philharmonic’s Principal Guest Conductor Jakub Hrůša.

The current motto there is »Rituals That Unite Us«, so it’s all about the rituals intended to bring people closer together again – which fits in perfectly with our love theme. We are performing in Edinburgh with a programme of our choice: from Bamberg we bring our favourite pieces with us as musical calling cards. These include our widely acclaimed spotlight on Hans Rott’s First Symphony – and the exciting love triangle between this artist, who died young, and the two masters Bruckner and Mahler. We have also recently explored the close friendship between Brahms and Dvořák – and are playing two important works by these brilliant composers. As a monumental finale, our last concert in Edinburgh will feature a larger portion of Czech music together with the local Festival Chorus – with poignant compositions by Dvořák and his son-in-law Josef Suk.

Schumann, Schubert And Suk

Dvořák’s <em>Slavonic Dances</em>, like the <em>Hungarian Dances </em>of his mentor Brahms, were crafted to capture the spirit of eastern Europe for the benefit of a wide audience. We’ll enjoy these festive pieces alongside the composer’s picturesque Serenade for wind instruments – while keeping it in the family with the gorgeous, intimate Serenade for strings by Josef Suk, Dvořák’s son-in-law.

As you know, the tour starts in Bamberg: Before we embark on our Italian tour with our honorary conductor Manfred Honeck, we'll be performing some magnificent compositions at home – including two concertante character pieces, for which we'll be accompanied by Julia Fischer, of whom it was once said: "Everything she plays, she executes with such effortless grace," and one almost forgets "that this music is produced by a person and an instrument – ​​here, the music simply seems to flow from a soul and sweep the listener away." The two works for violin and orchestra included in the program are not only very close to our hearts, but also to hers, as this charming virtuoso violinist has a very personal connection to them: Her mother comes from Slovakia, and these sounds of Eastern European Romanticism were an essential part of her childhood. Josef Suk's Fantasy, composed in 1902, and Dvořák's Romance, first performed in 1877, are technically highly demanding and folklorically inspired compositions.
