Everything revolves around the music at the court of Queen Christina of Sweden, whose influence is linked to the names of many composers who are famous today. She was one of the most dazzling figures of that era – eccentric, self-assured, and a lover of the arts. She reigned in Stockholm for several years, but then abdicated the crown, converted to Catholicism, and moved to her beloved Rome. There, as a generous patron, she devoted herself to music, which she considered "one of the most moving arts," until the end of her life.

The traditional Christmas concert of the German Chamber Academy Neuss will take place this time in the Christuskirche. The string sounds from Arcangelo Corelli's famous Christmas concert "Fatto per la notte di natale", the heavenly melodies of Arvo Pärt and baroque concertos by Giuseppe Sammartini or Georg Muffat will transport you into a pre-Christmas mood. The concert will be conducted by harpsichordist Luca Quintavalle. He performs in the major concert halls of Europe, the USA and Japan. For more than five years he was the harpsichordist of Cecilia Bartoli and Les Musiciens du Prince under the direction of Gianluca Capuano and since 2020 he has worked regularly as an assistant and continuo player with Fabio Biondi.

Bach heralds the holidays. The Orchestral Suite No. 3 gleams with the sound of trumpets and drums, while the Sinfonia from Christmas Oratorio captures a quiet pastoral beauty. Two SLSO musicians take center stage for concertos: Alejandro Valdepeñas on viola and Ann Choomack on piccolo. Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, celebrated for her expressive depth and technical prowess. She has collaborated with today’s most important composers, conductors, and orchestras, creating a remarkable collection of new violin repertoire for future generations, including Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, a violin concerto written for her in 2021, which received a 2024 Grammy® Award nomination for her recording with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ms. Meyers’ CAMA recital debut program will include a premiere of Philip Glass’s New Chaconne, as well as Márquez’s Danzón No.2 in a new arrangement by the composer. Anne Akiko Meyers will play the exquisite 1741 “ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesù, considered by many to be the finest sounding violin in existence for its powerfully luxuriant sound and mint state of preservation. Joining Anne Akiko Meyers is Italian pianist Fabio Bidini, a distinguished faculty member at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

Our MAPC début features a spirited celebration of the “trio” sonata of two violins, cello, and harpsichord. This joyful program showcases the unique dynamism of the Baroque through the eloquent melodies of Handel, the complex counterpoint of Bach, and the harmonic richness of Corelli, alongside a newly-commissioned trio sonata by Karl Hinze.

Treat yourself to a fabulous and intimate baroque performance by Le Consort, the Paris-based preeminent ensemble. Le Consort is co-directed by violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte who is recognized globally as one of the foremost baroque violinists, the virtuosic harpsichordist Justin Taylor, and Baroque violinist Sophie de Bardonnèche; and joined by cellist Hanna Salzenstein. These four accomplished musicians, all under the age of 30, approach the chamber baroque repertoire with fervent dedication, genuine sincerity, and a touch of modernity. Their collective mission is to unite compelling musical personalities in the pursuit of chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Michala Petri is one of Denmark's most recognized soloists, and her talent on the recorder is legendary. Since her debut as a mere 11-year-old in Tivoli's Concert Hall in 1969, with her virtuosity and passion for the recorder, she has conquered the world's music stages and left her mark on the world of classical music for over 50 years. Now she dives once again into her absolute specialty: the magical universe of the Baroque. She lets the audience be seduced with lovely music by Vivaldi, as well as Bach's double concerto, originally written for violin and oboe, but tonight with Michala Petri's recorder as the main focus.
