With our Baroque instruments, we embark on a musical journey back in time to a fascinating playground of the 17th century. Everything revolves around the music at the court of Queen Christina of Sweden, whose influence is linked to the names of many composers who are famous today. She was one of the most dazzling figures of that era – eccentric, self-assured, and a lover of the arts. She reigned in Stockholm for several years, but then abdicated the crown, converted to Catholicism, and moved to her beloved Rome. There, as a generous patron, she devoted herself to music, which she considered "one of the most moving arts," until the end of her life.

The traditional Christmas concert of the German Chamber Academy Neuss will take place this time in the Christuskirche. The string sounds from Arcangelo Corelli's famous Christmas concert "Fatto per la notte di natale", the heavenly melodies of Arvo Pärt and baroque concertos by Giuseppe Sammartini or Georg Muffat will transport you into a pre-Christmas mood. The concert will be conducted by harpsichordist Luca Quintavalle. He performs in the major concert halls of Europe, the USA and Japan. For more than five years he was the harpsichordist of Cecilia Bartoli and Les Musiciens du Prince under the direction of Gianluca Capuano and since 2020 he has worked regularly as an assistant and continuo player with Fabio Biondi.

Nicholas McGegan, a titan in the field of early music interpretation, guides the BSO and a team of all-star vocalists through Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, followed by one of the composer’s most beloved orchestral works. Corelli’s concerto, written for Christmas Eve, contemplates the wonder and quiet splendor of the night before, while Vivaldi’s setting of the hymn, “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” welcomes the vocalists back to deliver some of Baroque music’s most iconic and inspired melodies.
