Orchestra Pro Anima’s twice-yearly concerts at Christ Church continue to be popular. There are clear references to Christmas in this concert: in Corelli’s most famous work, his colourful and perennially loved ‘Christmas Concerto’; in a most tranquil interlude in Handel’s Messiah; and in an orchestral version of the timeless Christmas carol ‘O Holy Night’.

Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, celebrated for her expressive depth and technical prowess. She has collaborated with today’s most important composers, conductors, and orchestras, creating a remarkable collection of new violin repertoire for future generations, including Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, a violin concerto written for her in 2021, which received a 2024 Grammy® Award nomination for her recording with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ms. Meyers’ CAMA recital debut program will include a premiere of Philip Glass’s New Chaconne, as well as Márquez’s Danzón No.2 in a new arrangement by the composer. Anne Akiko Meyers will play the exquisite 1741 “ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesù, considered by many to be the finest sounding violin in existence for its powerfully luxuriant sound and mint state of preservation. Joining Anne Akiko Meyers is Italian pianist Fabio Bidini, a distinguished faculty member at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

Le Consort is co-directed by violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte who is recognized globally as one of the foremost baroque violinists, the virtuosic harpsichordist Justin Taylor, and Baroque violinist Sophie de Bardonnèche; and joined by cellist Hanna Salzenstein. These four accomplished musicians, all under the age of 30, approach the chamber baroque repertoire with fervent dedication, genuine sincerity, and a touch of modernity. Michala Petri is one of Denmark's most recognized soloists, and her talent on the recorder is legendary. Since her debut as a mere 11-year-old in Tivoli's Concert Hall in 1969, with her virtuosity and passion for the recorder, she has conquered the world's music stages and left her mark on the world of classical music for over 50 years. Now she dives once again into her absolute specialty: the magical universe of the Baroque. She lets the audience be seduced with lovely music by Vivaldi, as well as Bach's double concerto, originally written for violin and oboe, but tonight with Michala Petri's recorder as the main focus.

The program includes Arcangelo Corelli's Concerto grosso in D major, Op. 6 No. 1, a series of movements that showcase the depth and complexity of baroque music. George Frideric Handel's contributions include arias from "Guilio Cesare" and "Semele," as well as the Organ Concerto in F Major, HWV 295, all highlighting the vocal prowess of Joélle Harvey. The concert will also feature Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Violin and Oboe in C Minor, BWV 1060R, a testament to the intricate interplay between violin and oboe.

An intermission will provide a moment of pause before the continuation of this musical journey, culminating in Handel's "Silete venti," HWV 242, a work that promises to leave the audience in awe with its symphonic and vocal beauty.

Last season, our largest ensemble of string musicians recreated the official string band of France’s court at Versailles. This year, for our 2023/24 finale, we are thrilled to reunite this incredible orchestra in a new program that celebrates the profound influence of Lully’s 24 Violons du Roy on German and Italian music. The evening will feature works by Muffat and Corelli, transporting the audience through a musical journey that bridges countries and centuries.

The program includes selections from Jean-Baptiste Lully’s masterpieces such as "Atys," "Le bourgeois gentilhomme," and "Les plaisirs de l’île enchantée," among others. Arcangelo Corelli’s "Concerto grosso in D major" and "Trio Sonata in E major" will showcase the Italian genius's contribution to the baroque era. Georg Muffat’s "Armonico tributo" will further enrich the evening with its harmonious blend of French, Italian, and German styles.

Our ensemble for the evening comprises a talented group of musicians playing Dessus de Violons, Hautes-contres, Tailles, Quintes, Violoncelles, Violes de gambe, Basses de violon, and Basse continue, along with Percussions, Théorbe, and Clavecin. This diverse array of instruments promises an authentic and immersive baroque experience.

Formed in Paris in 2015, Le Consort is dedicated to Baroque music and the genre of the trio sonata. The ensemble focuses on interpreting music with enthusiasm, sincerity, and modernity. Made up of two violins, a cello, a harpsichord, and featuring rising Baroque star Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Le Consort is considered “one of the major players on the French baroque scene” (Diapason).

Artistic Partner Richard Egarr “pulls out all the stops” (literally!) in these neighborhood concerts featuring several delightful Baroque organ concertos by George Frideric Handel, which were originally premiered during intermissions of his operas and oratorios in London and highlighted the composer’s virtuosity at the keyboard. Egarr also leads the orchestra in several concerti grossi by Arcangelo Corelli, whose energetic showpieces inspired composers like Handel to write their own collections.

In earlier times, anyone who gave their Opus 1 to print sent out a clear signal: They had completed their musical apprenticeship and the time had come to present their first works to the public. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, it was customary to present trio sonatas for two violins and basso continuo in such an opus 1. The Roman violin master Arcangelo Corelli did this in 1681, as did many of his colleagues.

Praised for “ravishing, exhilarating, and uniquely beautiful” (BBC Music Magazine) performances, the French ensemble Le Consort likens itself to an early-music version of a string quartet—a close-knit group of four young musicians celebrated for bringing fresh vitality to Baroque chamber repertoire. Co-directed by harpsichordist Justin Taylor and rising star violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Le Consort claimed both first prize and the audience prize at the 2017 Loire Valley International Early Music Competition, chaired by William Christie. Langlois de Swarte has entered the limelight as an exciting new voice on Baroque violin, captivating audiences with his seemingly effortless blend of control and abandon. The Academy join American Cellist Gary Hoffman on a tour of the USA. Making his musical debut at the Wigmore Hall in London at the age of fifteen, quickly followed by New York, Gary became the youngest faculty appointee in the history of the Indiana University School of Music at the age of twenty-two. After winning the Premier Grand Prix of the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986, he embarked on an international career, appearing with the world’s most noted orchestras, in major recital and chamber music series and at prestigious festivals.

Concertmaster Peter Hanson presents an evening of intimate musical conversations, including six Baroque favorites featuring multiple soloists ending with Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D.  “Think of this program as an evening of brilliant soloists trading melodic ideas in an extended dialogue,” said Peter Hanson.  The centerpiece of the program is Bach’s beautiful Concerto for Two Violins, performed by Peter Hanson and Cynthia Roberts, principal 2nd violin and one of America’s leading period instrument violinists. The “Bach Double” features a second movement that ranks as some of the composer’s most beautiful instrumental music.  Pachelbel’s Canon is joyful and mesmerizing. The piece presents three solo violins and continuo repeating the same bass line 28 times while the three solo violins perform a canon (or round) on top. The work’s harmonic progression has been used by countless pop stars, making Pachelbel’s piece one of the most influential to modern times from the Baroque era.  Other featured soloists with Peter Hanson include violinists Edwin Huizinga and Johanna Novom and principal oboist Gonzalo X. Ruiz.

The ACO returns to the historic Harlem Parish, the stunning location of its fall ’20 filmed production of The Chaconne Project. Now we assemble the same performers to Revisit that experience in this lively program of Baroque repertoire with a focus on the chaconne—a musical genre that evolved from the bawdiness of 16th-century Spanish street dances to the refinement of Bach’s Chaconne for Solo Violin. In the splendid acoustics of Harlem Parish, we showcase ten vibrant chaconnes that use various combinations of strings, plucked instruments, harpsichord, voice and percussion. Acclaimed Mexican lyric soprano Guadalupe Peraza dazzles with her “mellow, conversational” mezzo (Opera News) and emotional delivery, complemented by dance and hand percussion.
