Set against the backdrop of late 17th-century Scotland, this masterpiece, with a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano and based on Sir Walter Scott's novel "The Bride of Lammermoor," explores themes of love, betrayal, and madness through exquisite music and compelling drama.

Join us on May 11, 12, 18, and 19, 2024, for matinee shows at 3 PM, with an additional evening performance on May 18 at 7 PM. A special free performance accompanied by piano will be held on May 7, 2024, at 7 PM, offering a unique opportunity to experience this operatic gem.

In demand across the world, Ermonela Jaho is best known for her portrayals of Verdi and Puccini’s heroines. She returns to her bel canto roots in a recital of rare songs by Gaetano Donizetti, alongside a selection by his contemporaries, with Opera Rara’s Artistic Director and pianist Carlo Rizzi. They will explore repertoire that has been recently restored and rarely, if ever, performed. The programme is complete with two works for violin and piano by Donizetti performed by brothers Marco and Carlo Rizzi.

A forbidden romance is kindled in Scotland’s Lammermoor Castle. Despite their clans’ age-old feud, Lucia and Edgardo, fall deeply in love and vow to marry. Lucia’s brother, Enrico, has promised her hand in marriage to a wealthy nobleman to save the family’s fortune. Desperate to ensure Lucia goes through with the wedding, Enrico tricks her into believing Edgardo has betrayed her, leading to a devastating turn of events that ultimately drives Lucia to madness.

Following her Royal Opera House debut in Andrea Chénier conducted by Antonio Pappano, mezzo-soprano Katia Ledoux joins pianist Anna Tilbrook for a recital presented by Opera Rara and the Temple Music Foundation. Taking place within the Inner Temple Parliament Chamber, the programme centres on the Parisian salons of the 19th century. Featuring newly-restored, rarely – if ever – performed songs by Donizetti from his years in Paris, the programme is completed with selections by Donizetti’s contemporaries. Including several songs composed by women, Ledoux and Tilbrook recreate the experience of a musical soirée.

This captivating presentation, led by the esteemed Lou Barrella, will delve into the dramatic moments of operatic weddings that are unexpectedly disrupted, creating unforgettable theatrical and musical episodes.

The talk will explore various operas where nuptial bliss is shattered by unforeseen events. From Mozart’s "Don Giovanni," where Zerlina is swayed by the Don's charm, to the tragic outcomes in Donizetti’s "Lucia di Lammermoor" and Puccini’s "Madama Butterfly" following the signing of wedding contracts. The comedic twist in Donizetti’s "Don Pasquale" with a phony wedding contract, and the climactic interruption in "Il Trovatore" when Manrico learns of his mother’s capture, will also be highlighted.
