The twentieth-century French composer Francis Poulenc has been characterized as half monk, half “bad boy,” equally at home in the cathedral service and the cabaret show. The sister ensemble to the Chineke! Orchestra, the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, is made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians aged 11 – 22. The concert opens with a blast of energy: Dukas’ Fanfare from La Péri, which was written after the composer had completed the 1912 ballet in one act, based on a Persian folk story.

The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. How could the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra give a more appropriate musical welcome to its new ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, the exceptional trumpeter Simon Höfele, than with the radiantly festive trumpet overture by the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy? While his Opus 101, premiered in 1828/1833, marks the time when the modern valve trumpet began its triumphal march, Simon Höfele first introduces himself to the Jena audience with Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E major, composed in 1803 for the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger, who was the first to be able to play notes chromatically across the entire scale on his newly invented keyed trumpet. He also has a surprise piece in his repertoire that - let's just say - revolutionized the art of trumpet playing in the 20th century and is now part of world musical literature. With a masterfully sparkling musical setting of water damage caused by magical amateurism – Paul Dukas' imaginative tone poem "L'Apprenti sorcier" from 1897, inspired by Goethe's famous ballad "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" – the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of General Music Director Simon Gaudenz, concludes its first Saturday concert.

The Jena Philharmonic Orchestra has given its 2024/2025 season the title "Secrets" - a translation of the biblical term "mystery" coined by Martin Luther. This contains the wonderful as well as the "home", the place where trusting interaction is possible and the hidden can be entrusted. The Volkshaus Jena, the home of the orchestra, should also be such a place for the audience. This is what General Music Director Simon Gaudenz is all about, who wants to deepen the mutual trust between musicians and audience and make each individual concert an unforgettable, powerful and unique experience. In its season opening concert, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra gives a brief preview of the plans for the season, which invites you to embark on a joint journey of discovery in the field of music.

Stravinsky showed his true colours in The Firebird. In this coruscating ballet music he unleashed for the first time the vivid colours that would captivate generations of theatre-goers. He had the perfect subject matter in the compelling story of the young Prince Ivan outwitting the evil sorcerer Kashchey and freeing the 13 enchanted Princesses with the help of the magical Firebird. Tianyi Lu also conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Puccini’s effortlessly lyrical Preludio sinfonico, Dukas’s retelling of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tale and a new Cello Concerto by Francisco Coll, powered by dances ranging from the tango to the waltz.

Our summer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church comes to a close with a program in which Principal Horn Jessica Danz showcases her instrument’s elegance in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4—jubilant, playful, and filled with the reminiscent sounds of hunting calls. The evening begins with Lutoslawski’s Overture, where the sharp sounds of the strings fill the intimate venue with an intensity that directly contrasts with the work that follows, Françaix’s light and delightful Sérénade. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 brings the concert to a rousing “end”—only to quietly resume after four measures of silence, giving Haydn the last word with this classic joke.

Dive into a magical musical adventure with the London Symphony Orchestra at the enchanting "Family Concert: Magic and Music" event. This spellbinding concert is perfectly crafted for children aged 7 and their families, offering a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of music and the orchestra. Set against the backdrop of the iconic Barbican on Sunday, 2 June 2024, at 2:30 pm, this event promises an afternoon filled with enchantment and melodies that will captivate the hearts of all attendees.

The concert features an impressive lineup of magical music, including excerpts from Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" orchestrated by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Paul Dukas's "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice", and the whimsical "Let’s Make a Potion" and "There’s Magic In Us All" by Lucy Hollins. The program also highlights classics like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Overture: The Magic Flute K620, Igor Stravinsky's Firebird 1919, and John Williams's "Hedwig’s Theme", creating a spellbinding atmosphere that will transport you to a world of wonder.

Under the baton of conductor Lee Reynolds, with Lucy Hollins and Patrick King as co-presenters, the London Symphony Orchestra invites you to immerse yourself in the magic of music. The concert is set to conclude at approximately 3:45 pm, ensuring an afternoon filled with memorable moments.

Tickets are priced at £18, £14, and £12 for adults, with a special rate of £6 for under-18s. A booking fee of £4 applies per online or phone transaction. Special discounts are available for groups of 10, saving at least 20%, and Barbican Access Members can avail of free companion tickets.

The symphony is transformed into a storybook on this literary program. Made famous by Disney’s Fantasia, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tells the tale of an apprentice discovering his master’s magic (as told by the trumpets) to bring a broom (as told by the bassoon) to life.

In his final program as Music Director, Louis Langrée and the CSO share the stage one more time for a performance that will pay tribute to highlights of their time together over the past 11 years. Grammy Award-winning soprano Latonia Moore will join the CSO for the world premiere of a new orchestral song cycle by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis, whose piece You Have the Right to Remain Silent profoundly impacted Louis and left a poignant impression on livestream viewers at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Revel in the music of myth, magic, and marvel! Grammy-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion and Music Director Ken-David Masur take the stage for Tōru Takemitsu’s visually captivating From Me Flows What You Call Time, which calls for unusual bells suspended from the ceiling and played using long, colorful ribbons. Debussy’s Nocturnes evoke the hazy motions of clouds, the dancing rhythms of festivals, and the mysterious songs of the Sirens through a trio of tone poems. Bookending this captivating concert is music by Dukas, opening with the brass choir fanfare from his ballet about a mischievous mythological spirit, and ending with his enchanting and familiar frolic The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
