For 25 years, Yuja Wang has dazzled the music world with her stupendous virtuosity, yet routine has never crept in. She is always searching for something new, eager to discover the unfamiliar and reinvent herself. The Festival theme “American Dreams” immediately resonated with her. That’s why she has added Samuel Barber’s Piano Concerto to her repertoire: a work that picks up threads from Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff, yet also shows the influence of Bartók and jazz. The result was so striking that Barber received the Pulitzer Prize for it in 1963. The real fun starts in the second half, when Yuja Wang performs the Jazz Suite by the Ukrainian composer Alexander Tsfasman — taking on the musical direction herself. She has a true feeling for jazz and, not coincidentally, received the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for her album The American Project. Her longtime friend Teddy Abrams was on the podium for that recording. In Lucerne, he will conduct the first half of the concert, beginning with Aaron Copland’s refreshing Appalachian Spring, with its echoes of folk songs, hymns, square dances, and fiddle music. A colourful season finale with works of great imagination and formal diversity. The concert begins with a late Romantic masterwork in Paul Dukas’s »Sorcerer’s Apprentice«, a brilliantly orchestrated musical parable on power and its unintended consequences. »Puzzles and Games« features scenes from the opera »Alice in Wonderland« by Capell-Compositrice Unsuk Chin; at times poetic, grotesque and even playful, this is a veritable cosmos of sonic illusions and absurd humour. The programme is capped by Sergei Prokofiev’s thrilling suite from »Romeo and Juliet«. Here the great Russian composer created an enchanting score of ever shifting moods that marries classical dance with the sounds of the first half of the 20th century.

Childhood memories of the music of the Sinti and Roma in his homeland inspired Zoltán Kodály's "Dances from Galánta," while Melanie Bonis's Suite en forme de valses exudes French lightness and elegance. This dance-like quality contrasts with the suspenseful music of Paul Dukas, who set Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's ballad of the same name to music in his "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

"Christ, you Lamb of God" – every churchgoer knows this chorale. In his Mutations from Bach, American composer Samuel Barber presents this melody in several variants – including in Bach's original arrangement, but here in a version for brass. The brass section of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra will then present a selection of works for this exceptional ensemble.

Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

The sister ensemble to the Chineke! Orchestra, the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, is made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians aged 11 – 22. The concert opens with a blast of energy: Dukas’ Fanfare from La Péri, which was written after the composer had completed the 1912 ballet in one act, based on a Persian folk story.

Lionel Bringuier begins his term as the 10th Music Director of the OPRL. For the opening of the season, he explores the French tradition through an emblematic program. And to complete the celebration, Gautier Capuçon, star of the French cello, pays homage with the Orchestra to the timeless elegance of Saint-Saëns.

The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. There’s a nod to this season’s Bernard Herrmann celebration, a mischevous sorcerer’s apprentice from Dukas, and premieres by Camille Pépin and Rachel Portman.

For this recital at the Martinů Hall, the PBtet presents the full range of possibilities from the brass quintet genre, from more typical fanfares to a suite from the opera Rusalka. The contemporary Czech composer Jan Kučera has written The Four-Colour Suite especially for the ensemble.

Jams for Juniors is the perfect way to introduce babies and toddlers to the magic of music! Children aged 0-5 and their adults can explore, play and join in at these popular 30-minute musical workshops.

Jams for Juniors: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Experience an evening of musical brilliance with "Itzhak Perlman: Cinema Serenade," featuring the world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman alongside the Nashville Symphony, under the baton of Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero. Perlman, celebrated for his extraordinary talent and captivating charm, will bring to life a selection of beloved cinematic scores. The program includes Paul Dukas’ enchanting "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice," Ennio Morricone’s poignant "Love Theme" from "Cinema Paradiso," and a medley of John Williams’ evocative themes from "Far and Away," "Sabrina," and "Schindler’s List." Adding to the evening's allure, the performance will also feature Carlos Gardel’s passionate "Tango Por Una Cabeza" from "Scent of a Woman," among other timeless pieces. This concert promises a rich tapestry of music that transcends the screen, offering a unique opportunity to experience these iconic film scores in a live orchestral setting.
