Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

The sister ensemble to the Chineke! Orchestra, the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, is made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians aged 11 – 22. Both ensembles were founded in 2015 with the aim of creating opportunities for emerging and established musicians of Black and ethnically diverse heritage.

The concert opens with a blast of energy: Dukas’ Fanfare from La Péri, which was written after the composer had completed the 1912 ballet in one act, based on a Persian folk story.

Lionel Bringuier begins his term as the 10th Music Director of the OPRL. For the opening of the season, he explores the French tradition through an emblematic program. The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. There’s a nod to this season’s Bernard Herrmann celebration, a mischevous sorcerer’s apprentice from Dukas, and premieres by Camille Pépin and Rachel Portman.

How could the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra give a more appropriate musical welcome to its new ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, the exceptional trumpeter Simon Höfele, than with the radiantly festive trumpet overture by the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy? While his Opus 101, premiered in 1828/1833, marks the time when the modern valve trumpet began its triumphal march, Simon Höfele first introduces himself to the Jena audience with Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E major, composed in 1803 for the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger, who was the first to be able to play notes chromatically across the entire scale on his newly invented keyed trumpet. He also has a surprise piece in his repertoire that - let's just say - revolutionized the art of trumpet playing in the 20th century and is now part of world musical literature. With a masterfully sparkling musical setting of water damage caused by magical amateurism – Paul Dukas' imaginative tone poem "L'Apprenti sorcier" from 1897, inspired by Goethe's famous ballad "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" – the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of General Music Director Simon Gaudenz, concludes its first Saturday concert.

The protean French pianist brings a programme concentrating on Bach on the piano – in this instance mostly in his own transcriptions. Alexandre Tharaud has also made his own pianistic version of Dukas’s famous orchestral showpiece, which contrasts with a virtuoso suite by the latter’s contemporary, Ravel, whose complete piano works form part of Tharaud’s sizeable discography.

The Jena Philharmonic Orchestra has given its 2024/2025 season the title "Secrets" - a translation of the biblical term "mystery" coined by Martin Luther. This contains the wonderful as well as the "home", the place where trusting interaction is possible and the hidden can be entrusted. The Volkshaus Jena, the home of the orchestra, should also be such a place for the audience. This is what General Music Director Simon Gaudenz is all about, who wants to deepen the mutual trust between musicians and audience and make each individual concert an unforgettable, powerful and unique experience. In its season opening concert, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra gives a brief preview of the plans for the season, which invites you to embark on a joint journey of discovery in the field of music.

Prom 38: Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’ with the BBC Symphony Orchestra

Stravinsky showed his true colours in The Firebird. In this coruscating ballet music he unleashed for the first time the vivid colours that would captivate generations of theatre-goers. He had the perfect subject matter in the compelling story of the young Prince Ivan outwitting the evil sorcerer Kashchey and freeing the 13 enchanted Princesses with the help of the magical Firebird. Tianyi Lu also conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Puccini’s effortlessly lyrical Preludio sinfonico, Dukas’s retelling of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tale and a new Cello Concerto by Francisco Coll, powered by dances ranging from the tango to the waltz.

Prom 38: Stravinsky’s The Firebird with the BBC Symphony Orchestra

Our summer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church comes to a close with a program in which Principal Horn Jessica Danz showcases her instrument’s elegance in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4—jubilant, playful, and filled with the reminiscent sounds of hunting calls. Danz then conquers Villanelle, written by Dukas as a challenging exam piece for horn, sharing the soul and virtuosity of the instrument. The evening begins with Lutoslawski’s Overture, where the sharp sounds of the strings fill the intimate venue with an intensity that directly contrasts with the work that follows, Françaix’s light and delightful Sérénade. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 brings the concert to a rousing “end”—only to quietly resume after four measures of silence, giving Haydn the last word with this classic joke.
