“Performers should not be afraid of playing good music” says Sean Shibe – the visionary, multi-award-winning Scottish guitarist who’s single-handedly redefining the way the 21st century thinks of his instrument. “And listeners should try not to be scared of listening to it”. No worries on that score, as Shibe pairs the world’s favourite guitar concerto with the first hearing (in this form, anyway) of a flickering, fantastical modern classic by the innovative Spanish composer Francisco Coll. The passion rises like heat-haze; no wonder, then, that guest conductor Delyana Lazarova has framed it with visions of wonder: Rimsky-Korsakov’s very Russian postcard from Spain, and the sorcery, secrets and ear-tingling sensations of a real BBC SSO favourite, Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’.

The music of Spain features evocative compositions from Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Rodrigo and Maurice Ravel. De Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance is a movement of the ballet El amor brujo utilizes fast, repetitive trills and ornamentations, with the oboe introducing the dance’s twists and turns. Aranjuez Concerto for classical guitar by Joaquín Rodrigo was inspired by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, transporting the listener to another place and time. Ravel’s Rhapsodia Espagniola, Alborada del gracioso, and Pavane for a Dead Princess showcase numerous elements of Spanish music inspired by the composer’s heritage.

Following his professional solo debut in Tokyo, Ito won top prizes in seven major international guitar competitions, including the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition, the Tokyo International Guitar Competition, the Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition and the Seto-Ohashi International Competition. A performance of Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo with the National Repertory Orchestra marked his concerto debut, and since then he has performed repertories with numerous symphony orchestras, including the diabolical Concierto para una Fiesta by Rodrigo. A solo concert in Germany marked Ito’s European debut. The Japanese government has invited Ito to perform solo concerts in honor of two historic milestones – 150 years of U.S.-Japan diplomatic relations, and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Recently Ito traveled extensively in Spain giving solo concerts and clinics, including a performance as featured soloist for the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Festival in Linares, the birthplace of Segovia.

I am so excited to bring my childhood experience of listening to the music of my Cuban heritage while growing up in Miami to my home in Madison. This program will demonstrate the tremendous versatility of our Overture Concert Organ in a way that you all have not heard before. I contacted my childhood guitar teacher, Alvaro Bermudez, to help put together a band of some of the best classical and jazz musicians in Miami. Magela Herrera, flute, Alvaro Bermudez, guitar, Yarelis Gandul, percussion, and Alex Hernandez, bass, will join forces with me and our Mighty Klais to present a bilingual program of both classical and popular Latin-American music.

There’s more Iberian colour from the much garlanded Scottish guitarist, Sean Shibe, who performs the most famous concerto for the instrument, Rodgrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. One can say that the art of Classical guitar has its strongest roots in Spain, but its branches are all over South America. Welcome back virtuoso guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas performing a tour de force—Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Concerto for Guitar and Rodrigo’s Fantasia for a Gentleman. Both works were composed for and inspired by classical guitar legend Andrés Segovia.

Join us for an unforgettable musical journey as JoAnn Falletta, Conductor Emeritus, leads the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra in a mesmerizing performance of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." This special concert event will take place on Sunday, January 12, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the historic Hawaii Theatre, located at 1130 Bethel Street, Honolulu, HI.

The evening will also feature the debut of the South Korean guitarist JIJI, praised by The Washington Post for her stirring performances. JIJI will enchant the audience with Rodrigo’s Spanish guitar concerto, "Concierto de Aranjuez," adding a unique blend of excitement and elegance to the concert.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía. This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. There’s music by eminent Spanish composers including Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz and Francisco Tarrega, as well as music that takes inspiration from Spanish culture, including an aria from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen and the overture to Gioacchino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

Guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas channels the passion and flair of fellow Spaniard Andrés Segovia, the original star who premiered Joaquín Rodrigo’s debonair fantasy on old Spanish melodies. Cuban sensation Jorge Amado draws inspiration from the traditional music of his homeland in a new work for Orpheus. Evocative night music from Manuel Ponce and a vivid sketch of a skeleton from Gabriela Ortiz showcase the vibrant past and present of Mexican concert music. ¡Será una noche de fantasías!

Night music from Manuel Ponce and a sketch of a traditional skeleton character from Gabriela Ortiz showcase the past and present of Mexican concert music.

Dorothy Vogel will perform the exotic Nights in the Gardens of Spain which truly evokes the sights, sounds, and scents of a bygone era. Famed guitarist Matthew Cochran takes the stage for the beloved Concerto de Aranjuez mixing neoclassical sounds of the 18th century with 20th century movie-like lyricism…and in Spain, you are very likely to hear the slow movement of this piece played by a guitarist on a town square!
