Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze offers music telling of three very different places: rural Sweden, royal Spain and imperial Vienna. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía. This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. No piece of music is more closely associated with Spain worldwide than Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen", to which the suites with the "Toréadors" song and "Habanera" arranged posthumously by Ernest Guiraud contributed significantly. The Frenchman Bizet proved that he was also able to capture Provençal flair in his incidental music "L'Arlesienne", from which Guiraud also created a suite. While this and the "Carmen" Suite No. 1 frame the concert, the focus is on two masterpieces by Spanish composers: Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto", inspired by the palace gardens in Aranjuez, a jewel of classical guitar music from 1940, and Manuel de Falla's 1st Suite from the ballet music "El sombrero de tres picos", which premiered in 1919 and whose subject matter and sound world have contributed significantly to the identity of Spanish classical music.
