Rossini’s bright and sunny overture preludes one of the most famous and popular of all concertos, suffused with the sun-drenched melodies and balmy atmosphere of southern Spain; its achingly beautiful slow movement is perhaps the most sublime pieces of music ever written. The Spanish passion continues with Chabrier’s dazzling rhapsody and Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant and colourful suite. In contrast, Borodin’s tone poem evokes the sweeping plains of central Asia, whilst nightmarish visions abound in Mussorgsky’s dark and brooding depiction of a Witches Sabbath.

Our fourth classical concert is very special because we celebrate the return of Pepe Romero to Long Beach Symphony.

Pepe is a living legend who is not only one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever worked with, but also an incredible person who brings an irresistible humanity to the stage and to his music. I think it is that combination of incredible artistry and personality that makes his music-making so unique. I hope you can join us for this singular event. Pepe will perform the guitar concerto of all guitar concertos, the Concierto de Aranjuez by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, a concerto that transports us to Spain. The first movement is infused with dance-like rhythms– but I really think that the crown jewel of this work is the truly magical second movement, the slow movement and its haunting melody for English horn. It is one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed.

His music for Serge Diaghilev’s ballet The Three Cornered Hat thrusts bright colours, crisp rhythms and harmonic panache up against one another and here sets up an evening of Spain-inspired works to include red-hot music by Falla, Rodrigo’s fragrant guitar concerto and pieces by French composers Bizet and Massenet who couldn’t resist the allures of the impassioned dances and folk songs south of the border. As one of the most important Spanish composers of our time and the guitar's most important advocate, Joaquín Rodrigo, with his "Concierto de Aranjuez," the epitome of the guitar concerto, is a must. At the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, we're preparing a concert fiesta for the great composer, just as he would have loved it – performed by the country's young musical talent, the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, and Thibaut Garcia, hailed by the press as the "new face of the classical guitar." Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze offers music telling of three very different places: rural Sweden, royal Spain and imperial Vienna. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía. This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. Join us for an unforgettable musical journey as JoAnn Falletta, Conductor Emeritus, leads the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra in a mesmerizing performance of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." The heart of Spain beats in Rodrigo's timeless Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by one of the world’s most celebrated classical guitarists: Miloš Karadaglić. The iconic Boléro concludes the performance with its crescendo of repeating motifs accompanied by Ravel's rhythmic, folk-inspired Alborada del gracioso, Falla's balletic The Three-Cornered Hat and the riveting orchestral suites of Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole. Together, these compositions exude the flair, passion and spirit of Spain.

The LCSO’s 52nd season opener celebrates Latin-American music and the vibrant and colorful Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, which honors family members who have died. Led by Music Director Carolyn Watson and featuring guest soloist, guitarist Guido Sanchez-Portuguez playing Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, this concert will also feature works by Mexican composers Gabriela Ortiz, Carlos Chávez, José Pablo Moncayo, and Arturo Márquez.

No piece of music is more closely associated with Spain worldwide than Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen", to which the suites with the "Toréadors" song and "Habanera" arranged posthumously by Ernest Guiraud contributed significantly. The Frenchman Bizet proved that he was also able to capture Provençal flair in his incidental music "L'Arlesienne", from which Guiraud also created a suite. While this and the "Carmen" Suite No. 1 frame the concert, the focus is on two masterpieces by Spanish composers: Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto", inspired by the palace gardens in Aranjuez, a jewel of classical guitar music from 1940, and Manuel de Falla's 1st Suite from the ballet music "El sombrero de tres picos", which premiered in 1919 and whose subject matter and sound world have contributed significantly to the identity of Spanish classical music.
