The Spanish Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the first Spanish orchestra to grace the series for decades, brings with them a Mediterranean-inspired programme. Rapidly making a mark on the international scene, their Music Director, Roberto González-Monjas, will be joined by “the new face of classical guitar”, Thibaut Garcia, who will take the spotlight for Rodrigo’s exquisite Concierto de Aranjuez. The concert opens with the fiery elegance of Falla’s Three Dances from his ballet The Three-Cornered Hat. After the interval, journey through the enchanting world of Ravel’s whimsical Mother Goose Suite and soak up the lush, evocative portrait of Seville’s soul in Turina’s Sinfonia sevillana. The concert culminates in a mesmerizing crescendo with Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro.

Our first visit from a Spanish orchestra in many a year brings this exciting young ensemble from the port city of A Coruña. They’re joined by Thibaut Garcia, who’s been hailed as ‘the new face of classical guitar’ after winning every major international guitar competition within the space of just a few months. His performance of Rodrigo’s evergreen Concierto de Aranjuez – so popular that it’s been recorded over a hundred times – is the centrepiece of a richly varied programme from Spain and France.

A rhythm, a flute, and a melody you’ll never forget… it’s hard to say what exactly makes Ravel’s Boléro so irresistible. But this French composer had Spanish blood, and tonight’s concert is filled with the sunshine, the fragrance and the pure, intoxicating passion of Spain at its most seductive. Wild, whirling dances from Falla and Turina, delicate fairy tales from Ravel – it’s a fiesta in sound, even before Boléro strikes up that unstoppable beat.

But we couldn’t spend a night in Spain without hearing the classical guitar, and tonight the Coruña-based Spanish Galicia Symphony Orchestra is joined by dazzling young French guitarist Thibaut Garcia in that most Spanish of all guitar concertos: Rodrigo’s haunting and much-loved Concierto de Aranjuez.

Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is an icon in Spanish music, and surely the greatest guitar concerto ever written. It’s the centrepiece of a programme that also transports us to Andalucia with works by Joaquín Turina and Manuel de Falla. And then we’re in the company of Maurice Ravel, born to a Basque mother by the Spanish border, with two of his most enchanting pieces: the Mother Goose suite and the indelible Boléro.

Bacewicz’s six-minute Overture for Orchestra, composed during the German occupation of Poland, offers a perpetually shifting palette of colors. Lutosławski’s energetic Little Suite for Symphony Orchestra espouses Polish folk tunes, while Borodin’s colorful Symphony No. 2 evokes the exuberance of Russian folk dances.

Peruvian composer Jimmy López’s Fiesta! Four Pop Dances for Orchestra is a vibrant and exhilarating celebration of life, culture, and happiness. Filled with pulsating rhythms, bold colors, and infectious energy, it draws from the rich traditions of Latin American music and ends with a blazing Techno finale. Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz performed by the world-renowned Los Angeles Guitar Quartet celebrates the spirit of Andalusia, a region in southern Spain with its lively rhythms and soulful melodies. Each movement captures a unique aspect of Spanish culture, from the exuberance of a flamenco dance to the delicate beauty of a serenade. This work shines as a testament to Rodrigo’s genius and the flavorful allure of Spanish music. Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 is a powerful work often described as the “Symphony of Independence.” It is deeply rooted in the Finnish composer’s national identity, filled with moments of lyrical beauty and triumphant resolve. We’ll come away from this concert feeling the rhythms of living through music.

Rossini’s bright and sunny overture preludes one of the most famous and popular of all concertos, suffused with the sun-drenched melodies and balmy atmosphere of southern Spain; its achingly beautiful slow movement is perhaps the most sublime pieces of music ever written. The Spanish passion continues with Chabrier’s dazzling rhapsody and Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant and colourful suite. In contrast, Borodin’s tone poem evokes the sweeping plains of central Asia, whilst nightmarish visions abound in Mussorgsky’s dark and brooding depiction of a Witches Sabbath.

Our fourth classical concert is very special because we celebrate the return of Pepe Romero to Long Beach Symphony.

Pepe is a living legend who is not only one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever worked with, but also an incredible person who brings an irresistible humanity to the stage and to his music. I think it is that combination of incredible artistry and personality that makes his music-making so unique. I hope you can join us for this singular event. Pepe will perform the guitar concerto of all guitar concertos, the Concierto de Aranjuez by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, a concerto that transports us to Spain. The first movement is infused with dance-like rhythms– but I really think that the crown jewel of this work is the truly magical second movement, the slow movement and its haunting melody for English horn. It is one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed.

Spanish music has an atmosphere of its own which Manuel de Falla captured in concert works better than anyone else. His music for Serge Diaghilev’s ballet The Three Cornered Hat thrusts bright colours, crisp rhythms and harmonic panache up against one another and here sets up an evening of Spain-inspired works to include red-hot music by Falla, Rodrigo’s fragrant guitar concerto and pieces by French composers Bizet and Massenet who couldn’t resist the allures of the impassioned dances and folk songs south of the border. As tradition dictates, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra rings in the New Year with a musical journey to Vienna. Manuel de Falla’s vibrant Spanish folk dances follow, setting the stage for a Viennese festivity. Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze offers music telling of three very different places: rural Sweden, royal Spain and imperial Vienna. Take a trip with the Charleston Symphony through lush Spanish musical themes via Rimsky-Korsakov and Joaquín Rodrigo, with a detour to Austria for Brahms’ inviting and intricate Symphony No. 2. Conductor José Luis Gomez returns to the podium with Grammy nominated guitarist Mak Grgic for the CSO’s final Masterworks concert of the 2024-2025 season.

Daniel Bolshoy returns to join forces with Symphony Nova Scotia" class="css-u850">Symphony Nova Scotia" class="css-u850" data-mark-multiple="true">Symphony Nova Scotia for two virtuoso guitar showpieces. An Israeli-Canadian guitarist and educator, he has performed as a soloist with more than 60 orchestras internationally, and returns to Symphony Nova Scotia after his triumphant performance in 2016. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 is a delightful departure from his early works, with its cheerful and energetic mood that is sure to lift your spirits. Its four movements offer a diverse range of melodies and rhythms to keep you engaged and entertained while pulling at your heartstrings.

Before taking a trip across the continent as Stravinsky’s powerful Firebird Suite brings Russian folklore vividly to life.

Three artists showcased in virtuoso works for their instruments. TC Phil’s much beloved Principal Bassist Gary Gatzke, Jr. will wow you with unimagined possibilities on the bass in the Carmen Fantasy–based on themes from Bizet’s opera–this tour de force will knock your socks off with its inventiveness and sheer fun! Dorothy Vogel will perform the exotic Nights in the Gardens of Spain which truly evokes the sights, sounds, and scents of a bygone era. Famed guitarist Matthew Cochran takes the stage for the beloved Concerto de Aranjuez mixing neoclassical sounds of the 18th century with 20th century movie-like lyricism…and in Spain, you are very likely to hear the slow movement of this piece played by a guitarist on a town square!

Guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas channels fellow Spaniard Andrés Segovia, the original performer of Joaquín Rodrigo’s fantasy on old Spanish melodies. The young Cuban composer Jorge Amado draws upon his skills as a composer and violinist in a new work written for Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Night music from Manuel Ponce and a sketch of a traditional skeleton character from Gabriela Ortiz showcase the past and present of Mexican concert music.
