Revel in the music of myth, magic, and marvel! Grammy-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion and Music Director Ken-David Masur take the stage for Tōru Takemitsu’s visually captivating From Me Flows What You Call Time, which calls for unusual bells suspended from the ceiling and played using long, colorful ribbons. Debussy’s Nocturnes evoke the hazy motions of clouds, the dancing rhythms of festivals, and the mysterious songs of the Sirens through a trio of tone poems. Bookending this captivating concert is music by Dukas, opening with the brass choir fanfare from his ballet about a mischievous mythological spirit, and ending with his enchanting and familiar frolic The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

In his final program as Music Director, Louis Langrée and the CSO share the stage one more time for a performance that will pay tribute to highlights of their time together over the past 11 years. Grammy Award-winning soprano Latonia Moore will join the CSO for the world premiere of a new orchestral song cycle by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis, whose piece You Have the Right to Remain Silent profoundly impacted Louis and left a poignant impression on livestream viewers at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The symphony is transformed into a storybook on this literary program. Made famous by Disney’s Fantasia, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tells the tale of an apprentice discovering his master’s magic (as told by the trumpets) to bring a broom (as told by the bassoon) to life.

Once Upon a Time: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Antonin Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance Op. 46 No. 1 and his sublime and joyous Symphony No. 8 surround two exhilarating French works. The first is Henri Tomasi’s Saxophone Concerto performed by rising saxohponist Steven Banks, and the other is Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
