Tapiola Sinfonietta's new artistic partner Nicolas Altstaedt and long-time collaborator Ryan Bancroft will meet for the first time in a concert. Altstaedt is the soloist in William Walton's melodic and virtuoso cello concerto, which was completed in 1957 for cello legend Grigori Pyatigorsk. Sofia Gubaidulina died in the spring of 2025 at the age of 94. Her musical fairy tale Poema-Skazka, composed in 1971, tells the story of a chalk that wants to draw castles and gardens, but is condemned to scratch boring words and numbers on a school blackboard.

Since its founding in 2010, Trio Gaspard has established itself as one of the finest and most sought-after piano trios of its generation. The ensemble, led by the wonderful pianist and chamber musician Nicholas Rimmer, is dedicated to the classical trio repertoire, but also explores more obscure works and contemporary works. The first installments of its complete recording of the Haydn Trios have been critically acclaimed and, according to "Strad" magazine, "have left us wanting more." Following performances at London's Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Shanghai Symphony Hall, among others, Trio Gaspard now makes its Blaibach debut.

Already in the 1970s, Semyon Bychkov – among the most esteemed and respected conductors of our time – left Russia for the United States. Many musicians, composers, authors and academics have undertaken similar journeys in search of a creative home. One such figure is the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, whose much-loved Ninth Symphony From the New World was written during his time as a professor of composition in the US. In this symphony, Dvořák allows the musical roots of his beloved Bohemia to meet the sounds of Native American traditions.

A concert in two halves with an intermission – and it will be a very athletic affair on an exciting playing field with numerous musical passes: Under the commands of Elim Chan, we will form an orchestral team for compositions that demand teamwork and coordination. But first, we will musically prepare the stage for the match – with a work "written with great pleasure" by Sofia Gubaidulina: It dates from 1971 and is a delightful story about a small piece of chalk. For Dvořák's Violin Concerto, first performed in 1883, we welcome the acclaimed violinist Augustin Hadelich as the driving star striker: For although the original composition is based on the idea of ​​the symphonic concerto, there is ample room for the soloist to showcase their talent – ​​especially in the fiery finale, which is based on the Bohemian folk dance "Furiant," meaning "the intoxicating one" or "the frenzied one." In the second half, our task remains the same: to move the musical ball back and forth between the different instrumental sections with great precision and unerring technique – in Bartók's popular Concerto for Orchestra from 1943, which, while essentially a disguised symphony, offers ample solo opportunities for individual members of our ensemble.

Around 1920, the composer Emánuel Moór had the vision of building the piano of the future. His duplex piano with two manuals was born out of the spirit of the late Romantic period and offers even more tonal colours and a greater richness of sound. On an ordinary piano, one touch of the keys causes a hammer to strike the string. With the duplex piano, two hammers can be coupled: one keystroke then produces two tones simultaneously. This doubling of the tones leads to an unimagined fullness of sound in the forte, and to a magical brilliance of sound in the piano. The two manuals allow for differentiated layers of sound.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Spanish rhythms, Slavic dances: hardly any other art form can take you across the globe as quickly and convincingly as the characteristic music of different peoples. Transformed and incorporated, as a type or echo, as a quotation or starting point for something new, folk music has been an indispensable source of inspiration for even the greatest composers throughout all eras. This magnificent program, featuring a highly prominent ensemble, makes this clear. Sir Antonio Pappano was Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, for many years and is now Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. With the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the young but already internationally acclaimed Spanish violinist María Dueñas, he first draws on the enthusiasm for Spain of Édouard Lalo, who wrote a thrilling four-movement violin concerto entitled "Symphonie espagnole" for the virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. Afterwards, furiant, polka and other dances reign in the fantastic sequence of the “Slovanské tance” by Antonín Dvořák, created after the model of Brahms' “Hungarian Dances”: It gets your feet moving!

Heroes are dangerous – they can inspire us to great things, or, if they stumble, shatter our illusions. Elysium by Samy Moussa finds us in the everlasting paradise where heroes dwell; majestic, virtuous and ecstatically triumphant. Beethoven’s Third Symphony lost its original dedication when Napoleon turned from hero to villain and the epigraph simply became ‘Heroic... dedicated to the memory of a great man’; this extraordinary, revolutionary symphony makes a hero of Beethoven himself. Dvořák’s Violin Concerto was not written for a hero so much as a friend and collaborator in Joseph Joachim and it is bursting with Czech folk music influences, especially in its skirling, dancing final movement.

Born in Taiwan and raised in Australia, Ray Chen was accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music at age 15 and captured the world’s attention as First Prize winner of both the Yehudi Menuhin and Queen Elizabeth Competitions. Profiled as “one to watch” by The Strad and Gramophone magazines, his profile has grown to be featured in the Forbes list of 30 most influential Asians under 30, and appearances in the TV series Mozart in the Jungle. He plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin, once owned by the famed Hungarian violinist, Joseph Joachim.

A note from the Maestro: Our second concert in the 130th Season Masterworks series focuses on orchestral Americana with compositional styles that are as wide-reaching as the American frontier. Dvořák is well known for the style in which he culls musical material from traditional folk sources, and the Symphony No. 8 is laden with tunes he heard while composing in America. The new violin concerto by Wynton Marsalis blends jazz, blues and other classic folk styles into a canvas of American life and dreams and, in the music of William Grant Still, we hear a composer influenced by melodies and motives from the black American community as he skillfully weaves this material into traditional symphonic forms.

The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) regularly performs its chamber music concerts at the Homberg (Efze) town hall. This time, musicians from within the orchestra will present a captivating quintet program featuring works by Antonín Dvořák. The two chamber music pieces to be experienced are brimming with the musical tradition and inexhaustible spirit of the Czech metropolis on the Vltava River. simmering sensation lingers beneath the surface: In "Shadows of Stillness," Nina Šenk captures the anxiety of the standstill during the first weeks of the coronavirus lockdown. A touch of escapism hangs over Richard Strauss's oboe concerto:its idyllic tone and transparent texture give little clue to the circumstances under which the work was created. It was the first multi-movement orchestral work written by Strauss, then already 81 years old, after the end of the Second World War, a "great, yet unemotional swan song for a destroyed musical language" (Reinhard Schulz). With the peppery third movement, "Furiant," Antonín Dvořák gave his Symphony No. 6 a distinctly Bohemian character—at the same time, many details reveal a close influence from Dvořák's friend and patron, Johannes Brahms. This symphony brought him worldwide fame.

This season, we continue our odyssey through Shostakovich’s symphonies with Chief Conductor John Storgårds, who masterfully captures both the tenderness and ferocity of the composer’s music. Tonight’s programme features Symphony No. 10, premiered after Stalin’s death in 1953. Filled with grief, rage, and manic intensity, it feels deeply autobiographical – a feeling reinforced by the composer’s musical signature, the notes D, S, C, and H, that are furiously seared into the final movements of the work.

What are the dreams of the next generation? What kind of world do young artists want to build? The OM gives the floor to two of its favourite stars: conductor Glass Marcano and pianist Tony Siqi Yun. The Venezuelan El Sistema graduate made a highly acclaimed debut at the OM in 2024, earning the admiration of both the orchestra and the audience. Here, she returns with a work that reflects her vibrancy and passion—Dvořák’s New World Symphony—to be followed by Kauyumari, a piece by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz.

World premieres are exciting: For the first time, printed music becomes tangible music for an audience. For the first time, the composer experiences how listeners react to his new work. Thomas Blomenkamp's work features "Cordelia, the lovingly loyal daughter of King Lear; Lady Macbeth, the demoness lusting for power and murder; and 13-year-old Juliet, caught between love and death," the Düsseldorf-born composer reveals of these "portraits between lyric poetry, drama, and psychological study." He juxtaposes key monologues by Shakespeare's female characters, which could hardly be more different, and allows them to flow into one another—connected by two orchestral interludes. With Sylvain Cambreling at the helm of the Duisburg Philharmonic, a conductor is considered a proven specialist in contemporary music and is also known for his imaginative programming, something he has already demonstrated in Duisburg. With Hector Berlioz's "King Lear" Overture, he opens the door to the world of Shakespeare, contrasting it in the second half of the concert with Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 7. A work whose tragic tone and profound seriousness perfectly complement the English playwright's tragedies.

The concert opens with Haydn’s radiant String Quartet in D major showcasing his signature elegance and wit. The third chamber music concert will focus on a lesser known musical form presented less often at chamber music evenings, namely the piano quartet. The concert program consists of three seminal pieces in this genre by the most qualified composers Antonín Dvořák, Robert Schumann and Bohuslav Martinů.

Le Salon de Musiques, a compendium of world-renowned chamber music performers, takes place at the historic La Jolla Woman’s Club. The new season begins on October 12, 2025 and ends on June 14, 2026. Each event runs from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. The nine performances take place in an intimate stage-free environment, eliminating the boundaries between the artists and the audience. Introduced by a musicologist the concerts are followed by interactive discussions between the artists and the audience, sharing ideas and impressions about the music performed, while enjoying French champagne and a buffet featuring French cuisine.

La Jolla Woman's Club

Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen found inspiration in Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale for his own Catch and Release. Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 1 is a master class in skill and beauty, over 15 years in the making.

Concert 2

The second symphony concert, in which the symphony orchestra performs Joseph-Maurice Ravel's "Kaddish" – a setting of the most important prayer in Judaism – oscillates between major and minor, hard and soft, exhilaration and sadness on the occasion of November 9th. Also featured is Antonín Dvořák's now-famous Cello Concerto in B minor, which the composer created under the influence of great grief for his childhood sweetheart, Josefine. A fluctuation between major and minor, tension and relaxation, characterizes Johannes Brahms's Third Symphony. "... all movements seem to be cast from one mold, a heartbeat, each movement a jewel!" praised Clara Schumann in 1884.
