In Pēteris Vasks's Musica serena , the strings engage in an intimate meditation and dialogue as if they were a single, perfectly coordinated instrument, reacting to the conductor's every move. In the Sinfonia concertante , a new creation by the Franco-Argentine composer Strasnoy, Alexandre Tharaud and Jean-Guihen Queyras invent a bold play of mirrors, sometimes fused thanks to unsettling unisons, sometimes rivalry through rhythmic jousts. In the midst of this conversation on the border between concerto and symphony, the orchestra intrudes and establishes itself as a third partner, reacting to each of their phrasings. Finally, Dvořák's Symphony No. 5 reveals its Czech roots, from the folk dances of the scherzo to the incredible rhythmic energy of the finale. Poga and the orchestra will highlight its warm colors and spring-like vitality.

Each year from January until June, about 60 young people meet at the Rudolfinum to create a beautiful joint concert under the guidance of players from the Czech Philharmonic (and with support from their teachers). A sextet? A chamber concerto, rather, which Felix Mendelssohn completed in about ten days, in the spring of 1824 – he was only fifteen years old. The music flows like pure water, the general tone, both light and virtuoso, draws an evanescent Andante, escaped from the generous muse of an adolescent who would say: "I would gladly exchange my virtues for the sins of Mozart." The prodigiously gifted Euan Shields signs off his tour of duty as the Hallé’s Assistant Conductor with this red-blooded Slavic programme, beginning with Janáček’s atmospheric rhapsody for orchestra, Taras Bulba. Inspired by Gogol’s novella, this gritty portrait of the Cossack leader and his ill-fated sons vividly captures their battle-scarred lives and loves. Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma, whose dazzling artistry blew us all away last season, makes a welcome return with Tchaikovsky’s ardent Violin Concerto. It was written amidst the wreckage of his ill-advised marriage but the composer found inspiration in his friendship with violinist Yosif Kotek and completed the score in less than a month. The result was a triumph; unashamedly virtuosic yet fresh and lyrical, with a heartfelt slow movement and a whirling gypsy finale.

From the pen of the composer who pioneered the art of original film music, making it symphonic in scope and sophisticated in feel, comes Korngold’s glorious Violin Concerto that, not surprisingly, includes allusions to those movie scores. In the spotlight is Maria Dueñas, an in-demand star of the violin world. The concerto is lyrical, rapturous, with a finale alive with spectacular pyrotechnics. To conclude the concert, Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, filled with Bohemian rhythms (like the exciting sounds of the “furiant,” an aptly named dance in the third movement), is one of his most beloved works.

Our season finale features music guaranteed to lift your spirits. The concert opens with Maurice Ravel’s orchestration of Claude Debussy’s lighthearted “Danse” (“Tarantella Styrienne”) and continues with the world premiere of the Music Guild’s latest commissioned work – “Raíces” (“Roots”) by Los Angeles-based composer, María Eugenia León. Highlighting the musical traditions of both her native Canary Islands as well as Spain, “Raíces” features the timple, a five-string guitar described as “the pinnacle of Canarian music.” The evening concludes with Dvořák’s virtuosic Violin Concerto in A minor, featuring YuEun Gemma Kim.

Although many listeners swear that they hear snatches of such classic folk tunes as “Turkey in the Straw,” “Three Blind Mice,” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” Dvořák later claimed that the Ninth’s title was meant only to describe “impressions and greetings from the New World.” Kicking things off with a commissioned premiere by Tyler Taylor—the 2024 winner of the Emerging Black Composers Project—Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru leads the San Francisco Symphony in a rousing and profound program that also boasts Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto, No. 1, spotlighting Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski. The piano tumbles recklessly, sings ardently, mimics, mocks, and pounds until the meter-juggling finale drives home the happy ending.

The fourth annual Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival wraps up as Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in Dvořák’s Hero’s Song, a symphony in miniature that bears the composer’s distinctive style and irrepressible Bohemian spirit. Jüri Reinvere’s Concerto for Violin, Harp, and Orchestra receives its world premiere with virtuoso violinist Leila Josefowicz and TCO’s own Principal Harp Trina Struble alongside Bacewicz’s stormy Fourth Symphony and Adolphus Hailstork’s moving elegy for Martin Luther King, Jr.

Truls Mørk is the soloist in Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto as the Oslo Philharmonic and Chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä bring the concert season to a close. Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg made his international breakthrough as an orchestral composer with the massive work Kraft, scored for soloist ensemble, electronics, and orchestra.

The last but one concert of the Chamber Music Series focuses on the folklore inspired works by the Slovak composer Ilya Zeljenka; as well as Antonín Dvořák, who used the subtitle “Slavonic” in his String Quartet No. 10 in E flat major, Op. 51. The ninth concert, featuring the Kaprálová Quartet, will also offer Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44, with Petr Jiříkovský at the piano.

The always-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble features musicians from the legendary Met Orchestra in a variety of unique programs. The programme brings together three works written in the United States, spanning more than a century of American musical life. Celestis by Aaron Jay Kernis opens the evening with a glowing, expansive soundworld, its slow-moving textures and rich orchestration reflecting the breadth and confidence of contemporary American orchestral writing.

We are looking forward to a short tour of Italy under the direction of our honorary conductor, Manfred Honeck, and have brought along some wonderful compositions for the Italian audience – including two concertante character pieces. Julia Fischer will be joining us on our tour to perform them. It was once said of her: "Everything she plays, she performs with such effortless grace," and one almost forgets "that this music is produced by a person and an instrument – ​​here, the music simply seems to flow from a soul and sweep the listener away." The two works for violin and orchestra included in the program are very close to her heart, as well as to ours, because this charming and accomplished violinist has a very personal connection to them: Her mother comes from Slovakia, and these sounds of Eastern European Romanticism were an integral part of her childhood.

Alexander Gadjiev, winner of the 2022 Terence Judd-Hallé Award, joins forces with Grammy-nominated Ariane Matiakh for a performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2, is one of the finest virtuosic showpieces for piano, requiring both technical ability and deep musicality from its soloist. As one of the prize winners in the 2021 Chopin Competition, Alexander Gadjiev has both in spades. Before we dive into Dvořák’s lively and lyrical Eighth Symphony, audiences will also be the first in the UK to hear Hallé Featured Composer, Unsuk Chin’s Operascope, a musical walk through the history of opera with several nods to operatic giants like Verdi and Puccini.

The future prince of song gazed upon the chromaticism of Mozart's "Dissonance Quartet"—and in March 1813, at the age of 16, penned an early stroke of genius in just five days, carefree and bold in its harmony. The 22-year-old Antonín Dvořák composed 18 songs driven by heartbreak—and 22 years later arranged 12 of them for string quartet. Johannes Brahms, too, struggled for a long time before finally achieving his first string quartet, one that he considered truly valid. He had abandoned everything before it. With its selection, the Minetti Quartet offers a fascinating lesson in the quest for chamber music excellence.

Attention Dvořák fans: After the Fifth Symphony in the fifth symphony concert, here follows his Seventh – perhaps the most serious, but possibly also the most deeply moving, by the Bohemian musician, who over time conquered Europe and the USA. But those who focus only on this classic can easily overlook the others in this concert. Annabel Hauk, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1999, plays cello in Robert Schumann's A minor Concerto, which offers the solo instrument a pleasing amount of scope for elegiac expression and, as one of the first works from his Düsseldorf period, still exudes a great deal of joie de vivre. It is only fitting that chief conductor Nicholas Milton opens the morning with Weber's Freischütz Overture, as it is equally rich in color.

The viola figures prominently in tonight's Pro Musica concert. Dvořák's 3rd String Quintet has added an extra viola to the standard string quartet and dates from Dvořák's time in America in the early 1890s, where he went all out to find the American 'primordial music', just as he had done with his own Czech folk music idiom. We can therefore look forward to both tribal rhythms, folk tunes and Dvořák's take on what could be a new, American national anthem.

Cascade Symphony’s 2025-26 season concludes with three centuries of music from Austria, Italy, Bohemia and America, including overtures by Antonin Dvorak (Vanda) and Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story), and Ottorino Respighi’s Roman Festivals. Northwestern Winds (Oboist Edward Benyas, Clarinetist Denise Lum, Hornist Jill Jaques and Bassoonist Steven Morgan), who have collectively performed with the Chicago, Seattle, Milwaukee and Oregon Symphonies, the Seattle, Santa Fe and Chicago Lyric Operas, the Pacific Northwest and Joffrey Ballets, and at the Spoleto, Carmel Bach and Bellingham Music Festivals, among others, appear as soloists in Mozart’s delightful Sinfonia Concertante for four winds and orchestra.

Dvořák’s My Homeland Overture brings warmth and lyrical charm, while Aaron Copland’s El Salón México offers a colorful, folkloric portrait of a Mexico City dance hall. Chosen in honor of Copland’s 125th birthday, it reflects the season’s recurring theme of place and cultural exchange.
