Changes at home hit hard when viewed from abroad. For Dvořák, learning that his first love (and sister-in-law) was terminally ill back in Bohemia brought emotional anguish that was only intensified by distance. Brahms was no stranger tto emotional turmoil either, candidly writing about his struggles with depression, though his Second Symphony pushes the dark clouds away for an uplifting finale. Both composers’ struggles with dark times resulted in profoundly emotional music that is amongst the best either ever wrote.

Summer 1889. Antonín Dvořák escapes the hustle and bustle of the concert season and retreats to rural Vysoká. Nature, idyll, and tranquility await him here. Inspired by this environment, he quickly composes his Eighth Symphony – rich in color, full of freshness, and energy. Nature also plays a major role in Konstantia Gourzi's Message Between Trees. "I have learned to love trees," writes the composer, who was awarded the Opus Klassik in 2023. She felt their soothing power and a longing to embrace them. Here, nature becomes sound, a message. Her viola concerto "Ishaón, The Angel in the Golden Garden" was born out of a spiritual experience. It is part of a series of works dedicated to angels. Who better to premiere this premiere than Nils Mönkemeyer? The world-class violist is a transcendent explorer and a passionate ambassador of his instrument. The stage is set for sound, nature, and visions.

One of the most exciting piano trios on the international stage, the Merz Trio brings their creative approach to chamber music with a dynamic program. The concert begins with Beethoven’s Trio No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 1, followed by a set of short works curated by the ensemble. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s passionate Trio No. 3 in F Minor, Op. 65.

He has been sharing his enthusiasm for this repertoire with us since 2016, and we love to revel in the unique artistry of this region. First up is a lively piece by Smetana from 1874: the overture to the rarely performed opera "The Two Widows"—an entertaining composition about two very different cousins ​​and an unexpected visitor.

In her CSO debut, Ukranian conductor Oksana Lyniv leads a program that weaves together powerful stories. Evgeni Orkin’s Five Interrupted Lullabies opens with a series of haunting lullabies, each symbolically interrupted to mark innocence lost to war. Smetana’s “The Moldau” spins and swirls as it journeys along the winding Vltava River, while Dvořák’s Golden Spinning Wheel weaves a tale of fate and destiny, where enchanting melodies intertwine with dark, mysterious forces. Esther Yoo joins for Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto, written during the 1917 Russian Revolution and telling a story all its own.

The ASU Symphony Orchestra is joined by the acclaimed Harlem Quartet for a dynamic evening of chamber–symphonic collaboration, featuring Bernstein’s West Side Story concerto. Known for its genre-spanning performances and deep commitment to musical equity, Harlem Quartet brings its distinctive voice to the orchestral stage in a program shaped by dialogue, contrast, and expressive range.

We also welcome musicians from Red Mountain High School’s orchestra program, led by John Haggard, who will join the ASU Symphony in Dvořák’s iconic Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” The program opens with Carlos Simon’s rousing Amen!

The most epic of them is also the consummate musical autobiography. Ein Heldenleben is a picture of ambition, bravery and resilience which combines music of unprecedented richness, excitement and tenderness. Strauss’s bold orchestration might scatter its adversaries with panache but it concludes with a humbling glimpse of life’s spiritual journey. Before it, Giuseppe Gibboni is the soloist for the spirited momentum and tender repose of OPO Composer-in-Residence Alexey Shor’s Violin Concerto No. 7.

Beethoven's Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano and Orchestra, Op. 56 is also known as the Triple Concert. Before embarking on a tour of the world's concert stages, it was first performed privately twice in the spring of 1804 for its patron – Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian Lobkowitz. Arranged for accordion, mandolin and piano, the performance will feature a trio of Israeli artists, with composer and conductor Omer Meir Wellber both conducting and playing the accordion. The mandolin will be played by Jakob Reuven and the piano by Guy Mintus, a composer and pianist also involved in jazz and an enthusiastic music teacher.

Alexander Gadjiev knows Chopin. At the 2021 Chopin Competition, he won second prize overall and first prize in the sonata category—the first prize winner with Serbian roots. In the final, he played the Piano Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, and the jury listened "with bated breath." Those who aren't already breathless after Chopin's virtuoso work can look forward to a fairytale fantasy by his Polish compatriot Stanisław Moniuszko. Antonín Dvořák also greets us from neighboring Bohemia. A breathtaking evening!

With his String Quartet No. 14 in A-flat major, Antonín Dvořák bid farewell to the United States of America. He began it in 1895, shortly before leaving the country after a three-year stay. Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Merz Trio returns with another powerful program. Sandwiched between Beethoven’s Piano Trio (a conversation of tension and dark lyricism) and Dvořák’s Piano Trio (an emotionally rich venture of intense inner conflict) we find  the sweet center: Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (“Transfigured Night”), a  journey of tonal richness from D minor to D major, reviving harmonic language reminiscent of both Wagner and Brahms.

The secret sauce to what makes Dvořák’s G-major String Quintet so delectable is its incorporation of warm, hearty Bohemian folk elements as well as a rich and mighty double bass. While bass with string quartet is a less common chamber music combo, it’s certainly a satisfying choice for this work, giving it a greater, more robust range.

Music and memory have always been close companions; you cannot have one without the other. Brahms’s First Piano Concerto, a work of symphonic vastness and one of its composer’s greatest masterpieces, was written out of his burning grief at the early death of his mentor Robert Schumann and his desire to write a piece that would preserve the older composer’s memory for ever. Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony sprang from his intense longing for the freedom and independence of his native Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), and his passionate desire to commemorate those brave spirits who sacrificed so much in the cause of their beloved country.

Dr. Jeremy McBain is a trumpet professor at the University of Texas at Tyler, where he teaches applied trumpet, brass chamber music, brass methods, and arranging. He previously taught at Eastern Illinois University, Millikin University, and Saint Mary’s College. An active performer, McBain is principal trumpet of the Texarkana Symphony and a member of the Rose City Brass Quintet and Jazz Orchestra. He has also played with numerous ensembles including the East Texas Symphony and the Bach Society of Houston, and has performed with artists like Doc Severinsen and Michael Brecker. He holds a DMA from the University of Illinois, with earlier degrees from the University of Michigan and University of Houston.

Pianist and ECHO Klassik prizewinner Sebastian Knauer performs together with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra from Hamburg’s twin city Prague under the baton of American conductor and Emmy Award winner Sarah Hicks at the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. From Bohemia to America: what a contrast in the 19th century! Here, the Bohemian homeland with Smetana's excerpts from My Fatherland and there, Dvořák's From the New World, which hinted at elements of American folklore in his symphony but also did not deny characteristic Bohemian sounds.

Our principal conductor once praised the "natural quality" of our orchestra, saying that we "never play routinely" and therefore it "never sounds boring." He particularly appreciates our great enthusiasm for discovering the often still unknown music of his homeland, and so we will once again delve with him into the Czech repertoire, which has become irresistible to us – with exciting works such as the "Suita rustica" by Vítězslava Kaprálová, who was not only a highly gifted composer but also the first female conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. She came from Brno but died in exile in France at the young age of 25. In 1938, she wrote her impressive suite, inspired by the folklore of her homeland, which we will present with great joy and energy.

The program opens with Mozart's Trio in E major KV 542 , a luminous work where classical elegance converses with an unsuspected depth, notably in the andante grazioso with its captivating melodies. Then, the Slavic soul is revealed with Dvořák's "Dumky" Trio , an iconic piece blending melancholy and folkloric energy. Its six contrasting movements, inspired by dumky (Slavic ballads), oscillate between pain and joy, carried by passionate dialogues between the instruments. The finale returns to Schumann and his Trio in G minor opus 110 , a romantic masterpiece where youthful ardor and introspection echo each other. The feverishly soaring Allegro and the vehement finale rub shoulders with moments of rare delicacy, revealing the composer's tormented sensitivity. An invitation to discover the magic of instrumental dialogue where each note breathes under the fingers of these exceptional artists.

»Young, cool and brilliant: This is the string quartet of the future« (Sydney Morning Herald): the Vision String Quartet has generated enthusiasm worldwide for years – also because it is so unlike other string quartets. The four young musicians from Berlin, who also see themselves as a band, enjoy experimenting with concert formats and not only play classical works, but also their own pieces in which they dive into many musical worlds, from folk, pop and rock to minimal music. With exactly the same, varied programme of classical quartet works, poppy pieces (and perhaps one or two surprises), they now make a guest appearance at the Elbphilharmonie.

Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E major is a sparkling highlight. With virtuosic runs and radiant melodies, it showcases the trumpet at its best. Playing it for us is Lucienne Renaudin Vary, a master on her instrument! In Dvořák's Symphony No. 5, Czech folk music and romantic orchestral colors come together to create a music that touches the heart and soul. Pierre-Laurent Aimard, one of today's most important pianists, will grace the Rudolfinum with his brilliant playing and a unique recital. Four great artists with a passion for chamber music have formed an exciting new quartet that is bound to become an audience favorite.  Each of them is known for wonderfully expressive playing, so it seemed that ESPRESSIVO! was the perfect name for this new quartet of piano and strings.

Tapiola Sinfonietta's new artistic partner Nicolas Altstaedt and long-time collaborator Ryan Bancroft will meet for the first time in a concert. Altstaedt is the soloist in William Walton's melodic and virtuoso cello concerto, which was completed in 1957 for cello legend Grigori Pyatigorsk. Sofia Gubaidulina died in the spring of 2025 at the age of 94. Her musical fairy tale Poema-Skazka, composed in 1971, tells the story of a chalk that wants to draw castles and gardens, but is condemned to scratch boring words and numbers on a school blackboard.
