NatPhil’s 2026-2027 Season launches with a trio of works conducted by Carolyn Kuan. Laura Karpman’s All American blends the themes of three patriotic songs composed by Mildred Hill, Emily Wood Bower, and Anita Owen, as an homage to women’s advancement. Pianist Inon Barnatan returns to the NatPhil stage for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, an intense work that bridges the gap between classical elegance and romantic expression and cemented Beethoven’s place in the canon as a bold, individual voice. The evening concludes with Dvořák’s monumental Symphony No. 9. Infused with North American indigenous and folk music and Dvořák’s own impression of the vast, untamed prairies he encountered on a trip to Iowa, the “New World” Symphony is a sonic expanse that feels as fresh and wild as the great frontier upon every listen.

Step into a world of dark tales, mystery and dancing rhythms as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and viola soloist, also this season's P2 Classical Artist, Ami-Louise Johnsson are led by Taiwanese conductor Yi-Chen Lin. The music moves between deep lyricism and narrative drama – from Bohuslav Martinů's poignant Rhapsody-Concerto for Viola, where the solo part glows with feelings, to Antonín Dvořák's evocative The Noon Witch , a musical tale with both humor and horror. After its spectacular debut at the Musikfest Berlin in 2024, the Vienna Philharmonic returns in a new guest appearance, on this occasion with the conductor Tugan Sokhiev. The three-time Grammy award winner Hilary Hahn is the soloist in Antonín Dvořák’s brilliant Violin Concerto which guarantees a buoyant lightness not only in its thrilling final movement thanks to the influence of Czech folk dances. Sergei Prokofiev also selected the artistic form of dance for his musical depiction of the probably most famous love story of all time: the tragedy Romeo and Juliet based on William Shakespeare.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan-Akademie regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

With one hand she snaps a three-beat rhythm, with the other a two-beat rhythm, and on top of that she sings the violin melody: when America’s top violinist Hilary Hahn explains Antonín Dvořák’s Violin Concerto “in a nutshell” on a YouTube video, it becomes instantly clear why she chose this very piece for her long-awaited Lucerne Festival debut. Mischief and joy leap out at you — she loves this concerto, and the spark catches immediately. Hilary Hahn combines lightness with seriousness, virtuosity with poetry. That’s why, many feel, she belongs to a class of her own. Just like the Vienna Philharmonic: the flagship orchestra from the metropolis on the Danube will show everything it can do — passionate drama, delicate nuance, and a melting, luminous sound — when it performs what may be the finest ballet score ever written. Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet recounts Shakespeare’s “most excellent and lamentable tragedy” with flair, wit, and sheer impact. The conductor Tugan Sokhiev has assembled his own selection of the most beautiful numbers. And we love and suffer along with the star-crossed couple, hoping until the last moment — and we may well shed a few tears.

The Festival Strings Lucerne and Daniel Dodds are tying together a delightful garland of the loveliest melodies and dances from the New World in keeping with this summer’s theme, “American Dreams.” Though the program begins with a Czech composer — Antonín Dvořák, with the vibrant and feather-light Scherzo from his Serenade for Strings — it fits perfectly, since Dvořák was the “midwife” who helped American music discover its own identity. The African American composer Florence Price carries his musical language forward: her touching Andante cantabile goes straight to the heart. Also on board is the “Bad Boy of Music,” George Antheil, with a cheeky Allegro from his First Serenade. John Corigliano sends us traveling toward a better world filled with pleasure and brightness in his sonorous Voyage, inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s famous poem L’Invitation au voyage. George Gershwin enchants with a gentle lullaby, and Leonard Bernstein invites us to waltz. And how to top all that? With the Hoe-Down from Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo, of course — a square dance in classic country style.

Antonín Dvořák’s two most successful operas, The Devil and Kate, and Rusalka, are based on fairy-tale motifs. Blending folk and humorous with lyrical and fantasy elements is one of the typical (and still very popular) traits of Czech drama. Dvořák created a masterly patchwork of contrasting scenes – folksy, breezy, fiendishly fervent and courtly noble.

Dvořák's early masterpiece, Serenade for Strings, helped open the doors to the sacred halls of music for the young composer and is a work that is bursting with zest for life, youthful courage, joy and faith in the future – music that is also an opportunity for our wonderful string corps to really sharpen their bows and interplay, undisturbed by noisy colleagues.

The fruit of the collaboration between the two great creators, Antonín Dvořák and Jaroslav Kvapil, who were close as artists and friends alike, was a magical, dreamy story of the great, unfulfilled desire of the water nymph Rusalka, a work in which Dvořák’s musical genius reached its apex. The fairy-tale atmosphere inspired the composer to create singular, impressionistic music replete with melodic imagination and masterful instrumentation, a suggestive expression of the play of waves and the reflection of moonlight on the surface of a lake, as well as the overwhelming magic of a fairy-tale dream.

In 2023, South Korean violin star Bomsori and dynamic German conductor Anja Bihlmaier made their BBC Proms debuts together with Bruch’s rich and seductive First Violin Concerto. Now, they reunite on the Hollywood Bowl stage to revisit this prized masterwork alongside Dvořák’s euphoric Eighth Symphony, known for its Bohemian folk-flavored melodies, dance-like finale, and contagious joy.

The Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth (CMSFW) is dedicated to presenting superior chamber music experiences through education, outreach, and performances that inspire, uplift, and connect with our community. Since its first performances in 1989, CMSFW has made an important contribution to the vibrant performing arts scene in Fort Worth and North Texas. At the beginning of the Society, an ensemble of local artists worked with guest artists from around the country, and from around the world, to present seven concerts each season. A variety of local venues were used for the performances, starting with the Kimbell Art Museum, the Texas Boys Choir Building, and the McDavid Studio at Bass Hall. For the last eleven seasons, the concerts have taken place in the Auditorium of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Many of our prominent guest artists have been drawn from the ranks of the finalists in the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, and have often returned several times to perform at our concerts.

The third day of the Baltic Sea Festival opens with a vibrant musical gathering as musicians from the Czech Philharmonic and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra meet in the Queen Silvia Concert Hall. Together they highlight two chamber music masterpieces from their respective homelands: Antonín Dvořák’s warmly lyrical and irresistibly melodic Serenade for Strings — deeply rooted in Czech folklore — and Franz Berwald’s charmingly idiosyncratic Grand Septuor, a work that carries traces of Swedish musical identity in its most inventive form. She is just 21 years old and has already created a stir on the international stage: born in Sapporo, Japan, Yuki Hirano won the 2024 Vienna Classical Violin Competition at the Classical Violin Olympus and emerged in the spring of 2025 as the winner of the International Jascha Heifetz Competition in Vilnius, where she also received numerous special prizes. The secret to her success? “If the audience can enjoy the music, I’m happy,” says the student of Pavel Vernikov at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

On this season-finale concert featuring music by three great Czech composers, John Storgårds and Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt kick things off with Martinů’s invigorating, folk-tune-infused Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola—a work that also draws inspiration from Beethoven and Renaissance music. William Hagen, Clive Greensmith, and Anthony Manzo play the delightful Trio in G Major for Violin, Cello, and Double Bass by 18th-century Classical composer Josef Mysliveček, who was a close friend of Mozart’s, and, to bring the program—and the season—to a powerful close, pianist Juho Pohjonen joins forces with the Dover Quartet for one of the most beloved standouts of the chamber music repertoire: Dvořák’s rousing Piano Quintet, Op. 81.

A rare meeting of two legends: Daniel Barenboim and Yo-Yo Ma have shaped musical history over the past half-century. But there is more that binds them. Both regard music as the most powerful path to mutual understanding and have long been committed to intercultural dialogue. With his Silk Road Project, Yo-Yo Ma built a bridge from Asia to the West and continues to transcend boundaries between genres and cultures in his latest projects in order to foster social cohesion. Since 1999 Barenboim has kept the vision of reconciliation alive through the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, made up largely of Israeli, Palestinian, and Arab musicians — a vision that resonates all the more in our conflict-ridden time.

Our annual visit to Mikkeli Music Festival in Finland is a highlight in the Philharmonia’s concert calendar.

This intimate program features two lovely duets, including Falla’s folk-song-inspired Suite populaire espagnole—which evokes Spain’s rich musical and cultural landscape and here features cellist Paul Watkins and pianist Nicolas Namoradze—and one of Brahms’s final works: the F-minor Sonata for Viola and Piano, a late masterpiece performed by Paul Neubauer and Namoradze. The program also includes Dvořák’s elegant Terzetto, a mix of mournful and fiery music that’s scored for the unusual combination of two violins and a viola.

Ilumina fully lives up to the meaning of its name, which comes from the Portuguese verb ‘to illuminate’ or ‘to enlighten’. Founded in 2015 by violist Jennifer Stumm to offer world-class training and opportunities to talented musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds, the ensemble travels far from its home on an organic coffee farm near Sao Paolo, Brazil to reach the world’s leading concert halls. Only a poet could do justice to the combustible energy, collective commitment and life-enhancing artistry cultivated by Ilumina’s amazing players.

Rusalka feels trapped in a world from which there is no escape. She is ready to put her immortality on the line in return for a human soul, so she can gain the love of a handsome prince. But she must pay for it with her voice. Muted and liberated from her dark world, she is forced to watch as the prince rejects her in favor of a foreign princess – dooming them both. She cannot live, she cannot die, yet nevertheless at the end, she helps the prince find his death with a “rescuing” kiss.

Sometimes it takes an outsider to point out treasures hidden in our midst. The distinguished Bohemian composer Antonín Dvořák, associated with musical nationalism through his works inspired by Czech folkloric sources, insisted that American composers must pay attention to the boundless riches of indigenous and Black American music. During his time as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City from 1892 to 1895, he worked with Harry Burleigh, a distinguished Black American composer who introduced Dvořák to spirituals, and encountered Native American music during a summertime visit to Spillville, Iowa, in 1893. In response, Dvořák produced some of his most popular, influential works—not only the celebrated “New World” Symphony, but also the “American” Quartet and Quintet he composed in Spillville. Completing this illuminating program is the delectable Sonatina, Op. 100—a work the great violinist Fritz Kreisler was known to play under the title Indian Lament.

Emotional conflict is at the heart of this moving program, although it’s tempered by the presence of Kodály’s lighthearted, late-Romantic Serenade. Bernstein’s Halil—which the composer said speaks to a sense of war-based or war-feared “struggle” and to “the consolations of art, love, and the hope for peace”—opens the program, while Dvořák’s tumultuous F-minor Piano Trio—a work that an influential critic at the time said demonstrated that the composer was “at the pinnacle of his career”—brings the evening to a dramatic close.

Conductor Semyon Bychkov bookends the program with Smetana’s love letter to his homeland and Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, which bursts with optimism from the first note to the last.

The world we live in has rarely been as unstable as it is these days. Surrounded by crises and wars, the noticeable shift to the right is increasingly fueling fears for our democracy. If you ask young people on the street how they view their future, the majority answer is: worried. Starting with Antonín Dvořák's Symphony "From the New World," the Philharmonic State Orchestra asks in this concert: If we were allowed to dream, what would our world of tomorrow look like? How would our coexistence be shaped – between people, but also between people and the environment? As part of a one-year, participatory project, the musicians of the Philharmonic State Orchestra, together with students from two schools in Hamburg, are artistically searching for answers. They will present their results in this concert.

The Hamburg State Orchestra's Philharmonic Concerts become time-plays, transcending the boundaries of the ordinary: This concert features Barbara Assiginaak's compositional interpretation of Max Bruch's sonic imagination – the first movement of his violin concerto is replaced by a new composition by her, inspired by the original. Bruch confronts us today as a mirror of the past and, through Assiginaak, as a part of the here and now. This unabashed musical interplay opens new perspectives on our musical culture, our thinking and being, and our way of receiving music.

Praised for “…sparkling, taut performances” (New York Times), the Harlem Chamber Players are a collective of professional classical musicians dedicated to bringing high-caliber, affordable, accessible live classical music to people in the Harlem community and beyond. They have performed at Riverside Church, Apollo Theater, Merkin Concert Hall, The Greene Space at WNYC/WQXR, MET Museum, Brooklyn Public Library, Caramoor Festival, and Carnegie Hall.

In a program perfect for the weekend of our nation’s 250th anniversary, Dvořák’s evergreen “American” Quartet, with its echoing of American musical traditions, is performed here with two accessible yet overlooked quartet masterworks of American composers. Florence Price was a musical heroine of the Chicago Black Renaissance of the 1920s, while George Walker’s 1946 quartet has long been famous for its elegiac slow movement, often referred to as a counterpart to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The Harlem Chamber Players give us a rare opportunity to hear the entire work complete.

To conclude the season, the hr Symphony Orchestra is once again invited to perform a guest concert at the Kissinger Sommer festival. Under the direction of chief conductor Alain Altinoglu, Christian Tetzlaff will present Dvořák's Violin Concerto. The main symphonic work of the evening, to be performed in the Max Littmann Hall of the Regentenbau, is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10.

Brahms’ Fourth Symphony is music that ‘is some of the darkest and deepest in the 19th century’ according to The Guardian. In fact, Brahms’ inner circle had advised him against releasing it publicly. However, at the concert in 1897, there was reportedly rapturous applause after each movement.

Tonight’s event “reconstructs” the programme of a concert on 7 March 1897. It was the last time Brahms attended a public performance of his own music. That evening the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Hans Richter, were to play the three pieces here in what may seem like a curious order to modern audiences (particularly given the ending of ‘La Chasse’…)

In Pēteris Vasks's Musica serena , the strings engage in an intimate meditation and dialogue as if they were a single, perfectly coordinated instrument, reacting to the conductor's every move. In the Sinfonia concertante , a new creation by the Franco-Argentine composer Strasnoy, Alexandre Tharaud and Jean-Guihen Queyras invent a bold play of mirrors, sometimes fused thanks to unsettling unisons, sometimes rivalry through rhythmic jousts. In the midst of this conversation on the border between concerto and symphony, the orchestra intrudes and establishes itself as a third partner, reacting to each of their phrasings. Finally, Dvořák's Symphony No. 5 reveals its Czech roots, from the folk dances of the scherzo to the incredible rhythmic energy of the finale. Poga and the orchestra will highlight its warm colors and spring-like vitality.

For his guest appearance with his Hamburg colleagues, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Chief Conductor of the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra from Hanover, has brought a program featuring three Slavic composers. Nikolai Lugansky, a renowned Rachmaninoff expert who has released a highly acclaimed complete recording of his piano concertos, will be at the piano.

The European Orchestra Academy is a joint initiative between the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) and the European Union Youth Orchestra, founded under the visionary guidance of Iván Fischer. This prestigious program provides talented young musicians from around Europe with invaluable orchestral experience alongside the BFO, while also offering them the opportunity to perform as chamber ensembles across numerous European countries.
