Attention Dvořák fans: After the Fifth Symphony in the fifth symphony concert, here follows his Seventh – perhaps the most serious, but possibly also the most deeply moving, by the Bohemian musician, who over time conquered Europe and the USA. But those who focus only on this classic can easily overlook the others in this concert. Annabel Hauk, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1999, plays cello in Robert Schumann's A minor Concerto, which offers the solo instrument a pleasing amount of scope for elegiac expression and, as one of the first works from his Düsseldorf period, still exudes a great deal of joie de vivre. It is only fitting that chief conductor Nicholas Milton opens the morning with Weber's Freischütz Overture, as it is equally rich in color.

The viola figures prominently in tonight's Pro Musica concert. Dvořák's 3rd String Quintet has added an extra viola to the standard string quartet and dates from Dvořák's time in America in the early 1890s, where he went all out to find the American 'primordial music', just as he had done with his own Czech folk music idiom. We can therefore look forward to both tribal rhythms, folk tunes and Dvořák's take on what could be a new, American national anthem.

As part of the Spring celebrations, legendary conductor Neeme Järvi, who began his musical journey as a percussionist, will make a much-anticipated return to ERSO’s stage. He will be joined by the dynamic Estonian Percussion Group, an ensemble of four virtuoso percussionists: Karl Johann Lattikas, Lauri Metsvahi, Tiit Joamets, and Tanel-Eiko Novikov. Their passion and skill bring a unique energy that resonates with audiences of all ages. Earlier in 2025, the ensemble made headlines with a remarkable concert marathon, performing ten concerts across Estonia in a single night. For this concert, they will join forces with ERSO for a performance of Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, arranged by Peeter Vähi.

The Czech Philharmonic concludes its spring tour in the Bavarian town of Erlangen—known to Czech audiences as "Erlanky." In the modern Heinrich-Lades-Halle, the orchestra presents a signature program of the tour: Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, Elgar’s Cello Concerto featuring Sol Gabetta, and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, under the direction of Semyon Bychkov.

For the first time this season, a soundscape concert will take place in the DIE EICHE columbarium. An urn cemetery has been created in the historic granary at Hansahafen, enabling a pioneering form of commemoration of the dead and simultaneously serving as a venue for cultural encounters. The events focus on a different theme each year; in 2026, the theme will be nature. The soundscape concert will present works for string quartet and voice that touch on the themes of nature, love, life, and death in diverse ways. The songs in Paul Hindemith's cycle "Melancholie" based on texts by Christian Morgenstern are filled with dreams, moonlight, and ghostly voices in the forest and fog. Johannes Brahms' five Ophelia songs focus on the woman from Shakespeare's "Hamlet," driven to madness and suicide. Her fate is also taken up in the first of Robert Schumann's Six Songs, Op. 107. In addition to and between the sung songs in the program, songs without words from the cycle "Cypresses" for string quartet will also be heard, with which Antonín Dvořák created a touching portrait of his childhood sweetheart.

It may come as a surprise, but the Czech Philharmonic has performed in Düsseldorf quite regularly. Over the years, local audiences have heard the orchestra under the batons of Karel Ančerl, Václav Neumann, Zdeněk Košler, Gerd Albrecht, Jiří Bělohlávek, and Semyon Bychkov. Now, Bychkov returns to the city’s Tonhalle with his ensemble, bringing a program of Dvořák, Elgar, and Stravinsky. He’ll be joined by cellist Sol Gabetta.

At the Cologne Philharmonie, the two carefully rehearsed programmes from the April tour will come together in a unique combination. Ellen Taafe Zwilich declared her popular Concerto Grosso 1985 as a “20th century response to the spirit of Handel,” created for his 300th birthday celebration. Inspired by Handel’s Violin Sonata in D, in serves as a fitting precursor to Mendelssohn’s exquisite and romantic Violin Concerto in E minor. Dvořák’s pastoral Eighth Symphony vividly depicts Czech songs and dances through rich, pleasing melodic harmonies.

"I particularly love the Elgar Concerto," Sol Gabetta confessed in an interview in 2023. The colors, the vocal quality – the wit and the vibrancy that always flash up surprisingly: for the star cellist, everything is simply perfect here. The work had a rather rocky start in musical life: A poorly rehearsed premiere in 1919 damaged its reputation, which was only overwhelmingly restored in 1965 by the very young cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Incidentally, Elgar's Cello Concerto shares the fate of success "at the second attempt" with the second major work in the Czech Philharmonic's program: Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" also initially experienced a resounding scandal as a ballet before beginning its triumphant march on concert stages around the world.

This concert program features three masterpieces that impressively reflect the diversity of the Romantic era. The program opens with Carl Maria von Weber's Symphony No. 1, which combines both vitality and melodic beauty. Richard Strauss's symphonic poem "Don Juan" transports the audience into a passionate world of heroic myth. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 7, an emotionally intense work that impressively reflects the expressive power of the Romantic era. Sebastian Weigle, General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera from 2008 to 2023, leads the Graz Philharmonic through this fascinating program.

The spring tour opens at BOZAR, Brussels’ esteemed cultural center. This marks only the second appearance of the Czech Philharmonic there, once again under the baton of Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov. Cellist Sol Gabetta joins the orchestra in Elgar’s Cello Concerto, with Dvořák’s Carnival and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring rounding out the programme.

Dance has a special significance in all cultures. With his Four Black American Dances, the American composer Carlos Simon shows how important dance is for the black communities in the USA in particular. Simon has chosen four examples: a ring shout, a waltz, a tap dance and finally a holy dance, in which the exuberant forms of expression of black Protestant denominations come to life. Equally gripping are Erwin Schulhoff’s Five pieces for string quartet, in which the Prague-born composer takes up fashionable dances of the 1920s. In the version for large orchestra by Manfred Honeck and Tomáš Ille, the rapid rush of sound in these miniatures is immediately captivating. Antonín Dvořák traveled from Prague to the USA in 1892 to help establish an original American art music. Not only did he give his Symphony No. 9 the title From the New World, he also incorporated harmonic and rhythmic elements from indigenous and black music cultures. Manfred Honeck, General Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart from 2007 to 2011, will return to the podium of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart as guest conductor for this concert.

Schumann’s Fourth Symphony burns with the intensity and passion of German Romantic music. From its pensive introduction to its energetic finale, come and be swept up on a powerful emotional journey. Stefan Jackiw, one of today’s most captivating violinists, joins forces with guest conductor Louis Langrée to bring Antonín Dvořák’s violin concerto to life. Dvořák had a gift for melody like few others, and his only violin concerto features folk-like tunes and gorgeous sweeping lyrical themes.

At the center of the concert evening is the brilliant Jess Gillam, one of the most exciting musicians of our time. With her soprano saxophone, she combines technical virtuosity and charismatic stage presence like rarely seen. Two works put the saxophone in the spotlight: Dave Heath's "The Celtic" and James MacMillan's Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra. Both works are tailor-made for Jess Gillam. Heath's "The Celtic" combines Celtic melancholy with rhythmic energy, while MacMillan's work explores the boundaries of the instrument's timbres and expressive possibilities. His most famous is certainly the Ninth, but for many, Antonín Dvořák's Seventh Symphony is his best. This music feels rugged and melancholic, yet compact and strict. There is no superfluous note here, every motif is worked through, every counterpoint has something to say. No question: this is not cozy folk music from a Bohemian village tavern, but highly concentrated symphonic music in the spirit of Beethoven and Brahms.

"Simon Höfele's tone sounds like that of an oboe. No, it sounds like a human voice. Or maybe a trumpet? Disturbingly beautiful," said the SWR (South German Broadcasting Corporation) of this brilliant trumpeter. But it's not just his tone that makes him an exceptional musician. He plays a repertoire of impressive range with the highest quality. This makes him one of the best and most renowned trumpeters of his generation. As a soloist, he has appeared worldwide with leading orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. He performs at the Elbphilharmonie, as well as at Wigmore Hall, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. ​​In the 2024/25 season, Simon Höfele was "Artist in Residence" at the Jena Philharmonie, and in 2021/22 he was with us.

Not only will you bask in the sunshine of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony (he dubbed it “blue sky in A Major”), but you’ll also hear two concertos and two soloists! First, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto — intense, charged with emotion and considered by many the greatest ever composed for the instrument — quotes a beautiful Czech folk song in the instrument’s most ethereal range; and our principal viola gives the world premiere of a concerto by Jonathan Leshnoff, a GRAMMY®-nominated composer ranked among the most-performed living composers by American orchestras. It’s all under the exciting leadership of Ana María Patiño-Osorio, second-prize winner at the Malko Competition for conductors, in her DSO debut.

Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony

Dvořák’s renowned quartet takes on a more expansive scope in this arrangement for string orchestra, as Kerson Leong and Les Violons du Roy once again combine their talent and energy in a collaboration that remains as strong as ever. They promise an electrifying encounter on the occasion of a new work by François Dompierre.
