The Youth Orchestra will also perform the world premiere of a brand-new version of Danny Elfman's Wunderkammer. Elena Schwarz takes the podium to lead the Symphony in a program of modern masterworks by John Adams and Thomas Adès and one of Western classical music’s most beloved and recognizable works: Dvořák's Symphony No. 9. Adams composed The Chairman Dances while working on his opera Nixon in China inspired by an image of Mao Tse-Tung dancing the foxtrot. A specialist in the works of living composers, Leila Josefowicz joins the Symphony for Adès’ modern masterpiece Concentric Paths, co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic by the composer who also has many ties to – and a strong history with – California. Written while he was living in the United States, Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 drew inspiration from African-American spirituals introduced to him by his then-student, the great pioneer of American music, composer Harry T. Burleigh.

The Bennewitz Quartet is one of the top ensembles on the international chamber music scene. After winning two prestigious competitions – Osaka Chamber Music and Festa 2005 and Prémio Paolo Borciani, Italy 2008, they quickly gained the acclaim of the critics. In 2019 the Bennewitz Quartet won the Classic Prague Award for the Best Chamber Music Performance of the Year. In the 2023/24 season the Bennewitz Quartet returns to numerous stages in Europe (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linz, Bilbao) and will make its debut in Klagenfurt, Darmstadt and Duisburg. The quartet will tour again in the United States and Canada, and will continue various concert projects in Czech Republic including its engagement at Dvořák’s Prague Festival. Since 1998 the quartet bears the name of the violinist and director of a music conservatory in Prague, Antonín Bennewitz (1833-1926) who contributed greatly to the establishment of the Czech violin school. The most significant musicians who count among his disciples are Otakar Ševčík and František Ondříček and above all Karel Hoffman, Josef Suk and Oskar Nedbal who, under Bennewitz’s influence, formed the famous Bohemian Quartet.

Huw Wiggin has performed in venues all over the world, from the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing to those closer to home such as Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square, or Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. Since winning first prize and gold medal at the Royal Over-seas League Annual Music Competition, Huw has developed a career as a soloist and chamber musician. His debut disc ‘Reflections’ (with John Lenehan and Oliver Wass), reached no.2 in the UK Specialist Classical Chart. Huw is a member of the Ferio Saxophone Quartet, winners of the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Prize. As a professor of saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music in London he regularly gives masterclasses in the UK and abroad.

Dvorak's Cypresses for String Quartet and mezzo-soprano anchor this program. The piece began as a song cycle for soprano and piano. Dvorak then transcribed the music for string quartet alone. Now we hear a metamorphosis of the previous iterations which the Prazak Quartet commissioned - the songs accompanied by string quartet. If only Dvorak could hear them! It's Smetana's 200th birthday, so his second quartet. And we can't have Prazak without Janacek.

Cypresses is the name of a collection of poems by Gustav Pfleger Moravský, 18 of which Dvořák set as songs in 1865; 22 years later he selected 12 of them to arrange for string quartet.

This performance uniquely connects new work by Emmy-winning American Indian composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate with Antonín Dvořák’s cherished "American" quartet. Tate, a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, is renowned for his compositions that are both rich and provocative, earning high praise from critics. His co-commissioned work alongside his arrangement of Pura Fé’s "Rattle Songs" promises an exploration of layered and rhythmic soundscapes.

This concert will also feel different, with guest actors from the UofU Actor Training Program and SLC’s own Utopia Early Music providing context for the evening of orchestral music inspired by Shakespeare. Acclaimed for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty, the Escher Quartet opens its PCMS program with Samuel Barber’s Quartet in B Minor, Op. 11, the middle movement of which Barber later arranged for string orchestra as the Adagio for Strings. Following Florence Price’s second quartet—a monumental work that vividly captures the depth of Price’s unique talents—the ensemble is joined by violist Jordan Bak, “a powerhouse musician, with a strong voice and compelling sound” (The Whole Note), for Dvořák’s American string quintet, composed shortly after the composer’s quartet of the same name.

The Academy Chamber Ensemble was formed in 1967, drawing its membership from the world-renowned chamber orchestra the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was itself founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 and is currently led by Music Director Joshua Bell. The purpose behind the formation of the Chamber Ensemble was to perform the larger scale chamber music repertoire with players who customarily worked together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra and play-directed by Academy Director / Leader Tomo Keller, the Chamber Ensemble now performs in multiple configurations from wind trios to string octets. Its touring commitments are extensive and include regular tours of Europe and North America, whilst recording contracts with Philips Classics, Hyperion, and Chandos have led to the release of over thirty CDs.

Elfrida Andrée was a pioneer: the first Swedish woman to conduct a symphony orchestra and to graduate as an organist, becoming Gothenburg Cathedral’s organist when she was just in her mid-twenties. Andante Quasi Recitativo for Strings opens the programme and is intensely emotive and brimming with melodic richness.

Alban Gerhardt, ‘one of the finest cellists around’ (The Guardian), will then perform Dvořák’s celebrated Cello Concerto. It is a joyous piece, showcasing the rich middle register of the instrument, which the composer had always favoured. Brahms’s triumphant yet troubled Third Symphony, proclaimed by Hans Richter to be the ‘Brahms Eroica’, concludes the programme.

Opening Night welcomes the return of GRAMMY Award-winning Aoife O’Donovan whose enchanting melodies and evocative lyrics weave an unforgettable musical tapestry about the women heroes in her piece America, Come. This work is inspired by the lives and letters of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in a musical exploration of voting rights for women during the 1920’s. Then, immerse yourself in the soundscape of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 composed during his heroic election into the Bohemian Academy of Sciences. Every note in the Symphony explores a journey through landscapes and stirring melodies, sure to captivate you with its grandeur and passion.
