For their second concert, the award-winning Ulysses Quartet invites pianist Olga Kern to join them in a performance of Dvorak's Piano Quintet No. 2 on a program that includes works by Caroline Shaw, Fanny Mendelssohn, and a New York Premiere of a Christina Bouey's quartet "Soul."

In an interview, our principal conductor remarked approvingly that our orchestra's "special ability" is to "truly give its all in every concert"—and under his direction, we achieve this particularly well because we have long since achieved perfect synergy. We are delighted to immerse ourselves once again in a highly romantic work by his beloved composer Dvořák, who was once called the "prophet of Czech art." It was also said of his invigorating musical language and colorful inventiveness that one could argue about them as little as about the arrival of spring. This concert focuses on one of his vocal works, which Jakub Hrůša calls a "wonderful gift"—and whose "sensual melodic charm" was already praised by his contemporaries: The Stabat Mater, the setting of the medieval poem of the same name about Mary's grief at the sight of Jesus on the cross, is an exceptionally vivid and emotional piece.

Antonín Dvořák 's famous "Dumky" Trio is the focus of this chamber concert. The dumka, a Ukrainian folk song, is brought to life by the contrast between a subdued mood and cheerful interludes. With a sequence of six dumky, Dvořák impresses listeners with his endless melodic imagination. His trio is flanked by two sonatas for cello, one by Johannes Brahms, who was Dvořák 's great admirer and supporter, and one by Ludwig van Beethoven, without whom Romantic symphonic and Romantic chamber music would be unthinkable.

Dvořák’s goal for his Symphony No. 7, here conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, was to surpass all of his previous efforts. Grand, gloomy, and dramatic, it contains few of the Slavic folk–derived, nationalistic elements associated with the composer. The influence of Brahms—particularly his recent Third Symphony, which impressed Dvořák as the finest symphony ever written—permeates the four movements. Mozart’s exuberant and expressive Piano Concerto No. 9 represented a great leap forward in ambition and achievement alike. The young Canadian soloist Jan Lisiecki interprets what legendary pianist Alfred Brendel called “one of the greatest wonders of the world.”

Music that remembers and gives rise to hope can be heard in this 6th symphony concert. Mieczysław Weinberg dedicates his Polish Melodies to his beloved but lost homeland . On 6 September 1939 the young composer sat spellbound by the radio: the propaganda chief on the staff of the Supreme Commander in Poland announced that the German Wehrmacht was approaching Warsaw. The young music student immediately fled to the Soviet Union. “Poland is my homeland,” Weinberg maintained throughout his life, even after he had found a second home, a new family and the most successful period of his creative life in Russia. In Moscow he was initially able to establish himself as a successful composer, but the post-war period and the increasing oppression of minorities brought ever greater repression to the Jew Weinberg. The Polish Melodies , which Weinberg composed in 1950, paint a picture of his first homeland – if one believes the cheerful sentences, they must have been memories of a carefree time. Only once more, in 1966, did Weinberg return to Poland and learn that his parents and sister had been murdered by the Nazis in the Trawniki concentration camp.

"Anyone else could cobble together the main themes from his scraps," Johannes Brahms enthused about Antonín Dvořák's melodic ingenuity. He first encountered the young Bohemian's works in 1973 – and was completely captivated. He supported Dvořák wherever he could, and a close friendship developed between the two composers. It is therefore extremely fitting that the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia's concert will feature works by Brahms and Dvořák side by side. Star pianist Daniil Trifonov will play the Hamburg composer's exhilarating Second Piano Concerto, while the second half of the concert will feature Antonín Dvořák's magnificent Seventh Symphony under the direction of the newly appointed orchestra leader, Daniel Harding.

The Isidore String Quartet takes its name from Isidore Cohen, longtime member of the Beaux Arts Trio and the Juilliard Quartet. Cohen remains an icon of the American chamber music world and a pillar of New York's Juilliard School, where the members of the Isidore Quartet studied and came together as an ensemble inspired by the example of the Juilliard Quartet. Founded in 2019, the quartet used the time without a performance due to the coronavirus to work intensively on its ensemble sound and was rewarded with the first prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the most important chamber music competition on the American continent. Since then, the quartet's career has gone from strength to strength, and it is now the leading young ensemble in the USA, as well as touring Europe every year. For their Frankfurt concert, the 'Isidores' are bringing a brand new quartet by jazz pianist Billy Childs, which will receive its German premiere here, and Antonín Dvořák's great Symphonic G Major Quartet.

Making their respective debuts, Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni and German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott join the San Francisco Symphony in Dvořák’s wrenching and radiant Cello Concerto, a paragon of the Romantic cello repertoire. Although it was conceived in the United States, its beating heart belongs to the homesick composer’s native Bohemia. Brahms composed the Second Symphony on summer holiday in the Austrian province of Carinthia, where he awoke at dawn to swim in Lake Wörth, gorge on fresh crab in the afternoon, and hike for hours. A work of bittersweet depth, the Second revels in bright sunshine and lingers in cool shadows.

What moved Dmitri Shostakovich deeply at the end of his life was expressed musically in his last work. Although he found it more than difficult to write, he put his Viola Sonata op. 147 down on paper - a work in which he looks back on his often painful life full of melancholy. Our Composer in Focus this season is Ivan Danko. His composition Frustration of the Tolerance is inspired by the painting of the same name by Slovakian artist Albin Brunovský and moves between expressive drama, quiet fragility and a hint of folkloristic motifs – an exploration of inner turmoil and the attempt at balance. In his Piano quintet No. 1, Antonín Dvořák does not yet appear as the Czech national composer he has become known as. This music is highly romantic, full of opulent harmonies and rapturous gestures.

Nina Drath began her piano studies at the age of four in Katowice, Poland at the age of four with Wanda Chmielowska. She started to concertize abroad at the age of eleven in Czechoslovakia, where she made her first recording for radio broadcasting. She continued her piano studies with Regina Smendzianka at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, where she received her master's degree in Piano Performance. Then she entered the Virtuoso Study Program, which she completed in 1980. Between 1975 and 1980 she performed with the symphony orchestras in Frankfurt and Leipzig and competed in several international piano competitions. She was a prize winner in both the Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition in Spain in 1976 and the International Piano Competitionin Senigallia, Italy in 1979, and won a Polish piano competition in Slupsk in 1979. Nina Drath is the Founder and President of the Frederyk Chopin Society of Texas, Inc.

Szeps-Znaider knows and can do both: he is one of the few people who are equally successful as a violin soloist and conductor, and is happy to do both on the same evening - as in this concert by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. ‘I was simply curious and only knew the diverse orchestral and operatic literature as a listener,’ says the Copenhagen-born musician with Polish roots, explaining his dual career path. ‘The repertoire for solo violinists was ultimately too narrow for me.’ And narrowness simply does not suit the musical understanding of this artist, who knows how to deal with even such well-known violin concertos as the popular one in G minor by Max Bruch in an incredibly reflective and undogmatic way. Szeps-Znaider's credo is to scrutinise every note for its relationship to the whole - ‘that's why when I play it, it feels like I'm discovering the piece for the first time. Alma Mahler's Seven Songs immediately lead us into the world of the turn of the century: emotions between melancholy and hope, set to music with a deep, almost intimate expressiveness. In the arrangement for medium voice and orchestra, they unfold a sonic dimension that both touches and inspires. On the other hand, Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, known as "From the New World," is quite different. It bridges the gap between two continents and pours the impressions of a life in foreign America into grand symphonic arches. Longing sounds here like a distant memory, pulsating yet full of vastness. Dvořák's famous English horn theme, often referred to as the "Song of the Lonely Wanderer," captivates as much as the dynamic contrasts between drama and delicate lyricism. Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 – also known as the New World Symphony – is one of the most popular works of classical music. Why? Because it goes straight to the heart! Dvořák wrote it in the USA, when he heard the sounds of spirituals and music of the indigenous population for the first time. He mixed these influences with his unmistakable style full of melodies that you can't get out of your head. The symphony takes you on a journey: from the longing English horn solo in the second movement, which sounds like a memory of home, to the thrilling finale that exudes pure spirit of adventure. And if you listen closely, you may even discover the film music that was later inspired by this symphony – from "Jaws" to "Star Wars"!

A cello concerto cloaked in a symphonic cloak: At the very end, after many revisions and shortly before his death, Sergei Prokofiev called his Opus 125 "Symphonic Concerto." Quite appropriate, for it is so versatile, so humorous, and so powerful that it successfully combines the two genres. Alexey Stadler follows in the footsteps of none other than Mstislav Rostropovich, who played the solo part at the premiere in 1952. In the second half of the concert, the Stuttgart conductor Johannes Klumpp interprets a symphony by Antonín Dvořák, not from the new world, but still from the old: The Fifth, already in a style all its own and at least as valuable as its famous younger sister, premiered in Prague in 1879.

With its mixture of German Romanticism and Norwegian folklore, Grieg's piano concerto not only delighted audiences at the time. Franz Liszt was also fascinated by the Nordic dance-like tone and the lush melodic arcs: a musical excursion into the Scandinavian expanse and atmospheric natural landscapes. Afterwards, another Romantic masterpiece will be heard when the audience is transported to the "New World" of America with Dvořák's 9th Symphony, where the Czech composer found inspiration for his composition.
