p>Chamber music is one of the great joys of life for our orchestral musicians. Here they meet up with Lera Auerbach, the composer, pianist and visual artist to whom a ‘Creative Portrait’ is dedicated this season. She will play Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor, first performed in 1785, in a version with string quintet. As the orchestra plays the role of a partner to the solo instrument in this concerto far more than in earlier representatives of the genre, K. 466 is probably a particularly good choice for such an arrangement!

Missy Mazzoli Barber's Violin Concerto

Our March program celebrates the global travels and diverse influences of some of our favorite composers, creating a rich tapestry of sound that will be meaningful for both the orchestra players and our audience. Czech composer Antonín Dvořák spent three years in America (from 1892-1895) as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, which is where he composed his great Cello Concerto. We’ll be joined by guest cellist Nicholas Canellakis, a multifaceted artist who appears regularly with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Hungarian composer Béla Bartók was well known in America as a pianist, teacher, and ethnomusicologist, and his Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta is one of his most popular compositions. We’ll open the concert with a world premiere symphonic work from young Bahamian composer Stefan Thompson, a recent Boston Conservatory graduate, now studying for a PhD in Screen Scoring at New York University.

You can feel the vastness and harsh beauty of the country in his music. Jean Sibelius is considered the Finnish composer. His works were received with patriotic enthusiasm when Finland remembered its traditions. Sibelius conceived his second symphony on the Ligurian coast in the summer of 1901 and presented it to the public in Helsinki in March 1902. The melodies are reminiscent of Tchaikovsky and Slavic folk music. Cellist Bruno Philippe has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals in recent years, including the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich. The young Lithuanian conductor Izabelė Jankauskaitė first attracted international attention in 2022 as the winner of the Neeme Järvi Prize from the renowned Gstaad Conducting Academy.

This matinee performance concludes the Vienna Philharmonic and conductor Riccardo Muti’s back-to-back concerts at Carnegie Hall. They perform the last—and grandest—of Mozart’s symphonies: No. 41, “Jupiter,” a culmination of the composer’s mastery of Classical music conventions. It is also, as far as we know today, an extremely rare piece written of Mozart’s own accord, with no paid commission connected to or influencing it. The program also features Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” One of the classical canon’s most beloved works, it received its premiere here at Carnegie Hall with the composer himself in attendance.

Grieg's iconic piano concerto looms large in the little Norwegian's production as a mountain of good sound and good melodies that reflect his love for nature and longing for his homeland; it was written in Søllerød in flat Denmark, but oozes Norwegian expanses, granite and musical whey cheese, and the Nordic master melodik shows his full potential here already from the first, shattering A minor chord, which is known far outside the confines of classical music .

Acclaimed Trio Karénine has established itself in recent years as a key group on the French and international stage. The piano trio is lauded for its musical integrity and joie de vivre by critics and audiences alike. The program concludes with Dvořák’s rarely programmed second piano trio, filled with color, warmth, lively dance, and Slavic folk elements.

Jessie Montgomery, in collaboration with soprano Julia Bullock, drew from a 19th-century anthology of spirituals to create a work that articulates a powerful expression of their shared experience as Black Americans. Dvořák's concert overture is a joyous, exuberant celebration of life, transporting the listener into the wild clamor of a carnival at nightfall.

»Listen carefully to all folk songs! They are a treasure trove of the most beautiful melodies and open your eyes to the nature of different cultures.« Robert Schumann once noted these wise words in his collection of »Musical House and Life Rules« – and Jakub Hrůša loves to rummage through the various treasure chests of late Romanticism with its manifold folkloristic styles. He constantly includes pieces by his beloved composer Dvořák on the programme – even the lesser-known ones, as he sees him as an artist »who is always interesting, in every work«. And so we now have the rarely performed »Heldenlied« to discover: a tone poem from 1898, which grippingly revolves around different moods from happiness to sorrow.

The ODEON Youth Symphony Orchestra has been the official patron orchestra of the Munich Philharmonic since 2010. For this youth concert, the "godchildren" play shoulder to shoulder with the professionals. The Munich Philharmonic's principal violist, Jano Lisboa, presents two romantic gems for viola and orchestra: the popular romance by Max Bruch and the romance for viola and piano by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which was only discovered after the composer's death and which Lisboa presents in an arrangement for viola and chamber orchestra. Anyone who travels has a story to tell - musically too! Antonín Dvořák incorporated influences from American music that he encountered during his stay in the US into his orchestral suite. To escape the cold English rainy weather, Edward Elgar spent the winter in Liguria in 1904. "In the South (Alassio)" was inspired by the Italian landscape, language and culture. Joel Sandelson, winner of the Salzburg Festival Conducting Competition, conducts this varied program, while Malte Arkona moderates with a mixture of humor and background knowledge.

Please note the program change: Antonín Dvořák's Quartet and Quintet: Musicians of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will devote themselves to Dvořák's piano music in a chamber concert in the Rolf Liebermann Studio on February 24th.

"He is a true poet. What a sophisticated musician!" wrote the Austrian press about the cellist Jeremias Fliedl, one of the most promising cellists of his generation. Fliedl is the soloist in Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto, which is on the programme of the 7th Philharmonic Concert alongside Jean Sibelius' first symphony. Both composers have had a significant influence on music in their home countries, both have the aura of being a kind of "national composer". And both have given strong impetus to the stylistic development of music in the Czech Republic and Finland: Dvořák by drawing inspiration for his works from Czech folk music, Sibelius by managing to establish something like a "Finnish tone" with his music. This is certainly just as much fun to listen to as seeing Emmanuel Tjeknavorian again.
He has, however, changed sides: two seasons ago he was a guest with the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist with his violin, and now he stands at the podium in front of the orchestra. The Austrian musician is multi-talented, which he will prove this evening.

Founded in 1946 and hailed by The Boston Globe as "the most important American quartet in history," the ensemble draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. Each performance of the Juilliard String Quartet is a unique experience, bringing together the four members' profound understanding, total commitment, and unceasing curiosity in sharing the wonders of the string quartet literature.

Paul Huang, who left TSO audiences spellbound in 2022, returns to perform Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, originally written for the composer’s friend, violinist Joseph Joachim. The concerto is accompanied by two of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances. Written originally for piano duo while he was still relatively unknown, it was these dances that helped Dvořák achieve notoriety. Dvořák came to the U.S. later in life and wrote the New World Symphony, inspired by African-American spirituals. The concert’s second half features works by American composers with very different backgrounds: a TSO co-commissioned work by Arizona-born Raven Chacon, a 2023 MacArthur Genuis Grant awardee, and Still’s Symphony No. 1, known as the “Afro-American.” Chacon, a member of the Navajo nation, draws on relationships between the western and indigenous communities while Still drew from popular African-American music.

No other version of the popular story where a mermaid falls in love with a human man and has to give up her form and herself for the love she craves, tells so beautifully of the two parallel worlds as Antonín Dvořák's opera Rusalka. And no one knows this world so well as the dazzling drag performers with whom director Bastian Kraft doubles Dvořák's forest and water creatures. They are experts in transformation and beautiful appearances in the spotlight. Through lip-synching, the drag performers make the fairy tale of mermaid and prince their own. Alongside a top-class ensemble of singers, they are on a quest for a life in which who we love and who we are no longer determines whose existence takes place in the light and whose is forced to take place in the dark.

The performance opens with Wagner’s jubilant Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin with brass blazing and strings to capture the medieval tale of chivalry and betrayal.  Then SPSO presents one of the first performances of Greek-New Zealand Composer John Psathas’ All Seeing Sky, an evocative work for two percussionist soloists and orchestra, featuring world acclaimed percussionists Lynn Vartan and Weichin Lin.  Dvořák’s emotionally profound Seventh Symphony concludes the concert as a personal reflection on grief and joy.

Too few compositions from the German, Baroque composer, Johann Christoph Förster, have survived, but this lovely Concerto in Eb for Horn and Strings, in the Italian style, is to be enjoyed, and features the natural horn.  The Italian Classical composer, Domenica Cimarosa, was a master of the Opera Buffa, and this mischief and wit is discernable in his Concerto for Two Flutes and Orchestra.  The 19th century Czech Romantic composer, Antonin Dvorák, celebrated the folk melodies of his native Moravia and Bohemia, in the cultural celebration of National Romanticism in his “Czech Suite” Op.39.
